if you met kit's parents, you'd probably have no idea how they managed to raise a daughter like her. hector and rose were artists and self-styled hippies, chillers in every sense of the word. they made most of their money traveling to art fairs around the country and selling his paintings and her weird sculptures.
they never actually meant to have a child, but kit was a surprise in their late thirties. she traveled with them sometimes, but most of the time she was left in the care of hector's older sister maria.
if you met maria, kit would make more sense. she wasn't necessarily strict, but she was far more methodical and no-nonsense than kit's parents. she ran a bar in town, which her niece spent far too much time in as a very young child, and ran a tight ship. kit was ordering employees around the bar just like her aunt by the time she was a tween.
she did get artistic inclinations from her parents, though. it was only natural when her parents, without a proper studio, just set up easels and half-finished sculptures in the middle of the living room. she never bought into their more pretentious or whimsical ideas about what art was or should be; she just liked doing it, and she was good at it.
she got into CalArts and moved to LA at eighteen at her aunt's urging, forgoing a plan to take a few years off and work at maria's bar. it wasn't that kit was unambitious, but she'd never been so afraid of anything when initially presented with the idea of moving all the way across the country by herself.
so she went, but quickly realized that she hated it. school had never been her thing in the first place, but a formal arts education when everything she knew about art was completely unstructured turned her off immediately.
maria refused to entertain any of kit's threats of dropping out, so she grinned and bore it. and she hated school, but she loved LA. her grades tanked as she refused to apply herself, but she got deep into the city's music scene and nightlife. she did her first tattoo in a booth at the viper room on a minor celebrity, halfway to a blackout, with a trendy tattoo artist's hand poke kit.
she struck up a friendship with that artist, jules, who guided her into body art culture and the scene in LA. it started as a mentorship and informal apprenticeship but quickly evolved (devolved) into a toxic situationship. kit gave into jules's encouragement to finally drop out of college (she was on the verge of losing her scholarship anyway; it's a miracle she lasted as long as she did) and moved into her place when she was twenty-one.
jules was simultaneously controlling and unwilling to commit, even though kit was head over heels. and she had a cocaine problem that quickly became kit's problem. kit indulged first just to fit in, and then it became a crutch, and then it became a habit.
three years later, kit was successful enough to have her own studio space and a good reputation in LA, but she was still living with jules and was miserable as a result. she didn't have her own friends and jules insisted that they stay attached at the hip (even if she was bringing other people home and kicking kit out for days at a time).
a drunken phone call to her aunt, who she'd gotten away with lying to about her life for years, finally gave her a way out. maria was in LA the next day, moving kit into an airbnb and threatening jules with a restraining order.
of course, she wasn't happy. a long screaming match turned into a long conversation. kit came clean about everything, and they figured out where to go from there. maria wanted her to move back home, but kit refused, so they compromised, with kit agreeing to leave LA.
she wanted to stay in california, but went as far as she could get from LA while remaining in the state and found a studio hiring in oakland. she stayed there for three years, learning how to be an adult with good people around her, before the studio went under.
at the recommendation of and good word from a friend (wc?), she moved down to aurora bay and got a job at crescent moon.
