I have been wanting to learn more about photography, but as you guys now know or may not know, I lack commitment and motivation. Tonight was different though! I got home from a wonderful day out and even though I did not want to, I set up my lights and my camera. I use a Nikon d3300 and just some studio lights I bought about three years ago. So I get home and start Youtubing ” how to take self portraits” and then luckily for me my favorite Youtubers popped up, Mango street! Surprisingly enough their “how to” was one of the few videos of theirs I hadn’t watched. If you are like me and have no idea what you are doing but want to learn, they are the channel for you. They are incredible photographers and videographers. Everything they put up is so aesthetically pleasing to my eyeballs and not to mention they are super funny. I’ll leave their channel and Instagram down bellow!
Tid bit fact about me, I have no patience. Ask anyone who knows me in the slightest. If it involves a lot of effort or a lot of time to figure out you can just see the look of irritation and frustration appear on my face. I know it is childish but that’s who I am, but, in my defense I’m trying to change that.
Once I have everything set up I begin to tinker. I start off with just putting the camera on portrait mode. You know, the camera does all the work for me and I imagined the photos would come out decent. I was wrong and after about ten minutes I was already struggling, great. I had started with the flash on but all of my photos were not vibing with me. The light was too harsh and the subject, a.k.a my face, was looking kind of weird. I always look kind of sick, I’m basically green, and the lighting was not doing me any favors. I had heard some where if you put a paper in front of the flash it worked really well as a reflector. Yeah, it didn’t. It just made the photos have this weird half light, no light situation. This was me for the first 20 minutes.
After a while I decided to switch to manual mode and let me tell you, game changer. I started tinkering with the appeture, shutter speed, the f stop, I turned off the flash and let my lights do all the work. I lost my remote control so I used the 10 second self timer and switched it so that it took 9 photos back to back so I wouldn’t have to keep going back and forth for every single photo because nobody has time for that my friends. It was magic after that.
I turned on my record player and put on some Michael Jackson and just started grooving’ to the music. I started twirling, dancing, and then got a stool to sit on and fell off of that about ten times. I even got my favorite plant to try to pose with it. Except i’m an idiot sometimes and totally had forgotten that I had JUST put water in it. The water slooshed all over my pants and it made it look like I kind of had peed myself. OOH WELL.
In the middle of my shoot my brother texted me that they had made spaghetti, MY FAVORITE, so I ended my mini photo sesh and I went and ate dinner. I had downloaded all the photos on my phone and just edited them with VISCO.
Though the color scheme is inconsistent I am super proud of some of them and really enjoyed myself, so here are a few for you to see!
