I was too scared to watch edward scissorhands has a kid but I thought about how could a woman go through pregnancy with a fetus growing metal scissors hands it took years of theorizing, still without watching the movie, to even think that maybe he wasn’t born with scissor hands
maybe women are stronger than you think
Sorry listening and learning here
Life in Code: A Personal History of Technology

Another Mother Tongue: Gay Words, Gay Worlds - Judy Grahn (1984)
Can I watch a great film knowing the actresses in it were terrorized and mistreated the entire time? Can I watch a football game knowing that the players are getting brain injuries right before my eyes? Can I listen to my favorite albums anymore knowing that the singers were all beating their wives in between studio sessions? Can I eat at the new fancy taco place knowing when the building that used to be there got bulldozed eight families got kicked out of their homes so they could be replaced with condos and a chain restaurant? Can I wear the affordable clothes I bought downtown that were probably assembled in a sweatshop with child labor? Can I eat quinoa? Can I eat this burger? Can I drink this bottled water? Can I buy a car and drive to work because I’m sick of taking an hour each way on the subway? Whose bones do I stand on? Whose bones am I standing on right now?
I want other young people to understand that if the extent of your radical action is posting “eat the rich!” on social media and waiting for somebody to tell you a revolution has started, nothing will change and you’ll get arrested in the Third Red Scare and that’ll be it
What’s the plan?
Join a local trade union and the IWW. Join or start a local tenant’s union. Volunteer with Food Not Bombs and do other mutual aid in your community. Support your local solidarity economy and maker community. Build, fix, and grow stuff. Use free, open-source software and stop letting companies sell your data. Pirate stuff. Break unjust laws. Attend local actions
And most importantly, join radical groups in your area. Strength is found in numbers and none of us can change the world alone. If you need help finding your local movement, DM me and I’ll look around for you so you can start getting stuff done
If you’re younger and can’t join unions or go to protests, you can still do some of the above.
Like as stated above for example, use open source software. Switch from chrome to firefox. Read the terms and conditions.
Shop at antique/thrift/pawn stores and stop buying everything new.
Barter. Exchange services, items, or skills with your peers. Are you 16 and able to drive your friends around? Carpool, and ask that your friends pay you back with food sometime, or teach you a skill that they have. Maybe that band kid is really good at knitting. Learn how to do that.
Never think that your contribution is useless. An ocean is just a multitude of drops.
Also, you can definitely join radical groups and participate in organizing protests and action groups when you’re younger.
There’s always a lot of work to be done and not all of it requires experience, a specific skill set or being legally an adult.
Tons of action groups would absolutely welcome young people and if some don’t, do not take it personally and just try another.
Also, and this is important, even if you don’t find or have access to A Group With A Plan, absolutely nothing stops you from taking individual action on your own time. Does your community have hungry people? Shoplift some bread and balogna, and let them know while you eat together why you did it. Rack some concrete and fill some potholes. Stencil some propaganda. Be the damage you’d like to see on the world.
I was with you until you said fill some potholes… is that something regular people can do?? LOL
But definitely archiving this post.

I want you, if you are not black, to consider a life like this. Every single time you walk past a cop, you do so fully assured in the knowledge that if he wanted to, he could kill you, and he could do it in broad daylight, and he could do it by suffocating you for several minutes while people walked by on the street and his partners watched, and that even if someone recorded all of this (and managed not to be assaulted while doing so) the video that includes your lifeless corpse could spread worldwide and your face could be on thousands of tee shirts and still nothing might happen to that cop. He doesn't have to do it. He probably won't. Individually, he probably has no desire to. But he could, and so could everyone who wears his badge, and the knowledge that they could is a small background terror in your life. I want you to imagine that this is true for everyone you're related to, for your mother and your father and your brother and your sister, and that it was like this for all of your ancestors back to the first ones who were stolen from their home and shipped to be somebody's chattel and that those owners are the people whose names you bear. I want you to imagine that every single day you live with the knowledge that your skin tone and features are quite likely the result of one of your female ancestors being raped by someone that owned her. I want you to imagine that you live every single day of your life under this kind of terror, and that when 200 years of pressure explodes you see white people who love you, white people who vote blue no matter who, white people who have never spoken ill of black people, expecting you to answer for some stolen televisions and broken windows. It is awful in a way you will never understand and that I would not wish for you to understand. It is a deeply and psychically devastating way to live. I'm not interested in talking about a vandalized building when my psyche is vandalized every single day and so were those of my parents, and their parents, and their parents, and theirs again.
1,000% living for historians and academics who are likewise supporting the destruction of statues of gross historical figures – like yes! we don’t need a statue to remember who they are! and they were shitty anyway so who cares!
They were not evil in the time they lived. Judging historical figures by current standards will always result in failure of the historical figure and is grossly unfair.
Newsflash bud, we’re not living in their time anymore. We’re in our time, with our standards, and if we don’t feel like honoring them anymore, that’s our right!! Just because someone decided to put up a statue one hundred years ago doesn’t mean we have to keep it up forever. Statues do not teach objective history. They honor and glorify. No need to keep em up when we’ve progressed as a society
Hilarious that the actual act of toppling these shitty statues has taught more people about the people they depict in less than a week, than the chunks of metal had in a century or more.
You don’t learn history from a statue. They’re not put up for educational purposes, at least not the ones we’re arguing over. The argue is constantly made that they’re for commemoration, the public act of remembering. That may have been true when the damn things went up and people needed and wanted a way to do that in public. They’re a cultural symbol, showing what a given group values.
And it’s perfectly fine to look at them and go, yeah, we don’t value that anymore, or that In fact, commemorating it actually goes against we now think is important.
Oh no! The destruction of history! Look at this poor statue of a misunderstood Russian leader, destroyed by virtue signalling SJWs.
Oh no! The history being erased in this ancient city.
Literally having slave traders, racists, war criminals, whatever on a pedestal and then going “hmm we’re not proud of this anymore, lets not glorify it” isn’t a bad thing.
We, as a society, don’t immediately forget something existed because the statue is no longer in the town square. We didn’t learn anything real about the person or the time by it being there. We remember by the work of historians and researchers who do the work, putting the thing in its full context, so we can understand why they did whatever they did, and why it wasn’t the only fucking view at the time or since. We can quite easily hold in our heads the dual ideas of “X thought it was right” and “but others then and us now do not”.
Get rid of them, slap them in a museum and teach people the whole picture, turn them into new works of art or just melt them down, whatever. But keeping them in place does nothing to help.
we also destroyed nazi monuments and renamed places and streets after ww2 in austria, so just because at the time something was not considered bad, does not mean that it should remain
“they were not evil in the time they lived” yeah i think the people that were enslaved and murdered by them in the time they lived would STRONGLY disagree with you. The opinions and complicity of their white contemporaries don’t override the extremely real suffering they inflicted on people of color
hot take: the capitalist cultural construction of “humans are naturally greedy and self-centered” is just an attenuated version of the feudal christian construction of “humans are inherently sinful”; both are designed to make people internalize cultural problems and externalize morality.
wait, what was that? creepy men are saying rape culture is natural? white ethno-nationalists are saying humans naturally organize into ethnic identity groups hostile to those unlike them? abled people are saying that humans naturally ‘abandon the weak to die’? what could it all possibly mean?
women typically do not want me and fish look at me and feel contempt
