I made a rocky pattern way back in 2022 and seeing how close your pattern (and process) is to mine (becuase it’s the same guy) is giving me such a good feeling of kinship. Yes! Create! Fuck yeah!!!! I know those shapes!!!!! I remember those times. I adore your work so much omg it’s really inspiring. It’s like watching someone paint the same subject next to you. I love you giant scale book Rocky

it’s interesting to see all this (largely thoughtful, surprisingly nuanced) discussion of Andy Weir and his I Don’t Do Politics In My Fiction! politics as somebody who actually read Artemis. Like, every post I’ve seen so far is about The Martian and/or Project Hail Mary, but the only mentions I see of Artemis are “can’t wait to read it!” Nobody seems to have read Weir’s second book and it’s a shame because that thing is a discourse goldmine

my main takeaway from reading The Martian, loving it, and then snapping up Artemis the minute it came out was—ohhhhhh this main character has a really specifically-crafted backstory whose purpose, whether Weir realizes this or not, is to sidestep most of the Uncomfortable Questions that this plot raises. Because Weir’s more interested in writing all the (exciting! Really fun to read!) moon heist shenanigans than he is in discussing the ethical implications of the billionaire moon-king hiring the local broke woman to do space crimes for him (but it’s not organized crime exploiting an economic underclass because Jazz’s poverty is 100% her own fault, a fact she believes and repeats to herself constantly! See it’s okay not to think about any of that because Jazz is Not Like The Other Poors)

The whole time I was reading I wanted to take Weir out for a beer and sit him down friendly-style to explain yes, Jazz probably would take that job, but buddy she would not be praising Trond as an honest man and a good father in her internal monologue while she does it oh my GOD dude

I can't stop thinking about Project Hail Mary so have some random stupid thoughts/hcs:

While on the ship, Grace and Rocky have a presentation night every couple days where they teach the other about something from their planet (Rocky does a puppet show of course and Grace uses PowerPoint) and after running out of good ideas, Grace uses his easily accessible collection of all human knowledge to research and present on the most random and specific topics imaginable

Rocky is always talking to Grace about Adrian on the way to Erid. How beautiful their voice is, their habits and quirks, their favourite sounds, how perfect the shape of their carapace is- (Grace practically feels like he's already met them by the time they land)

Grace goes swimming for the first time in his biodome and everyone is immediately surprised by how buoyant humans can be?!

I put this in the tags of a previous post, but Grace and Adrian would definitely become fast friends and swap science facts (and embarrassing stories about Rocky)

Every so often Grace gives his class "Human Culture Experiences" (he puts on one of his favourite movies and lets them watch)

Occasionally Grace refers to his class as his rock collection

With so much time in such close proximity Rocky 100% picked up some random human behaviors occasionally leaving Adrian immensely confused, for example at why their mate keeps pounding his fists together when happy or proud (he's clapping)

Not mine, but I love the idea that Grace would be Rocky and Adrian's go-to babysitter
