Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
This opens up a lot of possibilities for what a haiku can be
Do you believe in ghosts?
No, and I don’t get why others do

i was talking about this on my server earlier but i really think "cozy" is one of the worst genre labels out there in the gaming space. like people dunk on the terms "metroidvania" and "first person shooter" a lot for being uncreative or limiting but at least those are like... falsifiable descriptors. you can look at a game and go "yeah this game's mechanics and core gameplay loop generally operate like metroid/castlevania" or "yeah this game primarily uses a first person camera paired with some sort of projectile weapon" so i don't think they're completely useless. but "cozy" is just nonsense. fully subjective. i see a lot of games popularly labeled as "cozy" that share almost zero mechanical features between them and don't even always match in tone or aesthetic. hearing a game described as "cozy" doesn't tell you anything about what to expect as a player beyond maybe giving you a sort of forewarning about the fanbase and their discomfort tolerance. "cozy" is not a quantifiable metric. like imagine if someone offered to buy you takeout and asked you what kind of food you'd like and you told them fully unironically, and with no further elaboration, "i want to get yummy food." that's what hearing "cozy games" sounds like to me
I’ve always hated the term tbh. For one thing, half of the time it just feels like a way to devalue certain games + the people who play them (ex “oh they’re not a real gamer, they just play cozy games”). And for another, it feels like people will just slap the label “cozy” on fucking anything! Like, people will call combat focused rpgs like the Rune Factory games “cozy” because they have farming mechanics and dateable npcs. Is that what makes a game “cozy”? Farming? Dating? An anime art style maybe? Okay cool! Fire Emblem Three Houses is my favorite cozy game. Hades is not a cozy game but Hades 2 is. What are we doing here.

okay i never actually comment outside of tags but this genre label frustrates me so much that i should, like, write an essay on it or something. i know some people already have.
“cozy games” are, i suppose, supposed to be games that are relaxing. that you might play while bundled in a blanket on a rainy day while drinking a cup of tea, or might listen to/watch a more chill streamer play through as background noise as you work or sleep.
that’s literally nothing. by that definition, nearly every game on earth is a cozy game to someone. is minecraft a cozy game? sudoku? but no, of course not, that’s not what you’d expect to see if you searched for cozy games on steam or itch.io or something. so, without checking right now, let’s think of some default cozy games off the tops of our heads.
pokopia. the animal crossing franchise. stardew valley. all great games, all unfortunately stuck under this label. so what do they have in common?
building, world customization. i’ve seen very little pokopia so i can’t comment on it but i can say that stardew valley and the newest animal crossing game both have an element of resource farming and crafting involved. they’ve also all got cutesy graphics.
i remember seeing someone else (the source unfortunately escapes me at the moment) make the argument that cozy games typically tend to contain elements that are not cozy at all, but are associated with domestic labor that typically falls on women’s shoulders. this plus the “cute” aesthetic that you rarely see in games targeted towards men places the genre in a pretty uncomfortable spot alongside things like cottagecore with a label of “handle with care, risk of conservative pipeline inside”.
i think it’s also meant to be a departure from the sexist category of “girly games” that was more common when it was assumed that only boys liked “normal” video games, except somehow it feels very backhanded and limiting. like, sure, any gender can be cozy! but why are all these “cozy games” just “girl games” with a new label, and almost exclusively focused on such specific themes/mechanics, too?
is this a harsh criticism? yeah, maybe! but i’m making it because i AM the target of relaxing cutesy games and i absolutely hate farming and resource management, and world customization is only fun for me until it gets frustrating. i’m sick of nearly every cute game that comes out being targeted towards this “cozy game” “genre” for purely selfish reasons.
also because the newest animal crossing game feels like it’s totally departed from the original tone of the series and it makes me upset.
Ceramic sculpture "Narcissus" by Japanese artist Kenichi Nakaya
I just had an argument with someone who was like “why would we settle for food stamps when we could have universal basic income?”
And it’s just like. People need food right now you know.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. Hippie church moms donating quinoa chips to my local food bank have done more for me materially than any internet idealist ever has.
People get pissed at me for being a pragmatist in my political ideals but I’ve been in the position where I was out of food right now.
And who helped me with that? Not people calling for some nebulous revolution. Not people telling me that the system was useless. Not people preaching at me to grow my own food. It was a church food bank partially funded by the state of Texas that some southern hippies donated a bunch of Whole Foods nonsense to.
And you know what? I’m sick and tired of defeatism. What can we get done right now, huh? Are you gonna accept something a bit better to help people right now or are you waiting for your perfect utopia to come to you?
Yeah, UBI is better than the quinoa chips. Sure. But right now the quinoa chips are stopping people from going hungry and if all we can do is get the food bank quinoa chips to more people, then I say so be it. That’s something. I’ll almost always take baby steps over nothing.
