This might sound weird but do you think it’s too late to help pet store betta fish? I can’t stand seeing them in those little cups and i wanna help rescue one, but i’m worried it might be too late to help em
It’s probably not too late but you have to keep in mind, you are paying the pet store for those fish and therefore encouraging them to get more fish in and continue keeping them in poor conditions because people will keep buying them.
It’s the same sort of situation when people say they couldn’t stand seeing a backyard breeder puppy in bad conditions so they “rescued it”… except they bought it and therefore are actively contributing to the problem.
There is, sadly, such a thing as the pity market.
Pet stores run on impulse purchases.
They do not care why the animals were paid for, only that they were paid for.
There are written records of a pet shop owner buying sick or injured budgies cheap from their shitty breeders, clipping their wings, and dumping them in a nearby park to make bank off the flood of people who would find them and rush to the nearest store for supplies.
Selling betta in those little cups is calculated.
Stores can buy three or four times as many as there would have been space for if they were housed in tanks.
Fanciers will buy the pretty, charismatic ones when they first come in.
Concerned good Samaritans will buy the sick ones who've been there a few weeks, and some times spend lavishly for the supplies.
In the long run, not only do the stores take no loss for having fish in unchanged cups long enough for them to sicken, they are more likely to make MORE money on sick than healthy fish because they can literally bank on people buying them out of concern for their wellbeing.
This makes them very unlikely to stop.
The reason most pet shops don't sell puppies and kittens anymore is that there came to be serious backlash for any place selling them in poor condition.
The general public is beginning to care about birds, herps, and pocket pets enough to complain and drag the establishment's reputation instead of buying one to save it from the bad conditions.
By only buying animals that are healthy and complaining and warning other potential customers away instead of snatching up a sick one, consumers set and enforce dire consequences for the establishment's poor maintenance of their livestock.
Unfortunately, the general public doesn't care that much about fish that aren't super expensive.
But the precedent has been set for how to change this in other species: hit their seller in the wallet hard enough, and negligent practice will change.
If you are in a chain petstore and you see a sick animal (or a host of them in the case of the tanks at my local one), dirty enclosures, injuries, or neurotic behavior (such as nose rubbing, plucking, or obsessive over grooming) Video it! Then send an email to that chains corporate office and to your local news outlet.
News outlets will often leap on the opportunity to drag a business publicly & nearly all local news outlets would rather put their support on a local small business, so they see this as a win-win.
If you kick up enough of a fuss and spread enough awareness, they will be forced to change. They'll lose business across the board.
P.s. that new outlet bit will work for all kinds of bad business practices! There was this courier service that delivered left behind luggage in my hometown, that got shut down because someone outed that they were embezzling and not paying their employees to the local news, and the CEO was put on blast on live TV. They were forced to settle lawsuits with the staff & close down.
Cat loves showers. (via)

Rating: Cute
I know it seems weird, but this cat is just genuinely enjoying the shower. The tail is up and the tip curled. While this cat does have their ears back, that’s to keep water out of them, not due to stress! They’re is freely and happily moving around the shower and there are no signs of stress or discomfort.
This is just a.. weird happy wet kitty.
Need head from a broad with acid reflux. Make it sizzle princess
how does tumblr think they can possibly police the content on this website
okay, the whole “silly writers, siblings aren’t supposed to actually like each other” thing was always annoying, but it has now morphed into actual real-life people telling me and my actual real-life sibling that our relationship is weird and creepy because we enjoy spending time together and aren’t constantly at each other’s throats, so if we could all collectively stop pretending that siblings are only capable of being cruel to each other, and that any depiction otherwise is unrealistic, that would be great, thanks
I lived and worked in a lighthouse at a previous job. There was a thick line painted in a circle around the shack where the fog signal was kept. The line represented how close you could get to the fog signal without experiencing physical harm in the form of eardrums shattering or worse.
Even in the house it was LOUD. Probably the loudest thing I have ever experienced but at a normal, predictable interval. You would begin to time your sentences with little pauses with the rest of the lighthouse crew so you would talk like this while making your………..HORN…………. tea and then carry on talking because you knew when it would go off. It rattled the walls and the dishes in our cabinet.
At least one girl had died there. They kept photos of her everywhere “in honor of her sacrifice” because she had decided to take the winter watch alone and died in a storm where bounders the size of mini vans had been lifted out of the ocean and left scattered across the island, to say nothing of the ice chunks. People weren’t allowed to be alone on the watch after that.
One day a dead moose washed up on shore and it took my entire crew all day but we managed to rig up a line to hang it up to dry because we thought having a moose skeleton in the house would really spice the living room up a bit. It did. Weird shit happens when six of you are left alone, like ALONE ALONE, no cell reception, no wifi, just a radio to contact the real world and not a lot of reason to do that. People don’t go on lighthouse jobs if they want to stay connected, I’ve found.
That said Id do it all again, I really do treasure those days
Placing these one after another makes it look like he left got a lighthouse job and came back six months later to update the drive through employee
When you’re smart (even just in an “above-average” way) it becomes apparent that mainstream society is incredibly dumb, and so it’s important that the smarter you are, the more you go out of the way to surround yourself with the dumbest smart people you can find, to avoid developing the misconception that smart people aren’t dumb, when the truth is more that they’re dumb in smart ways whereas mainstream society is dumb in normal ways
the true strength of rationalism
This is why I read Five Thirtyeight
