I have just rewatched project hail mary, this time in the movie theatre! I want to say a little about my appreciation for the writing, especially the characters. Spoilers ahead,, obviously.
First of all, grace is an incredible character. He really proves that literally anyone CAN be brave and the hero even if at first you need a push or don't believe in yourself. Also, i LOVE that he sort of beats the introvert character archetype (atleast i think he's an introvert). Stereotypical introvert character: ew people, i can't communicate,, but grace in fact likes people. He just doesn't know how to small talk, or even deep talk that well. He likes people but they drain his social battery; as it goes with introverts.
A few words about rocky too! Okay, buckle up this interpetation (pretty sure i spelled that wrong) might seem a wee bit questionable/problematic at first but i'm aware of that :) bear with me. Okay, i think rocky is a nice rep for (disabled) people using text to speech. Yea, i know, that makes it seem like disabled people are aliens from my point of view, ew. I don't think that at all,, i assure you. If we don't look at it so deeply and just focus on the fact that rocky uses TTS this will sound more pleasant. So, even though he has some problems with communication (duh bc he's an alien BUT please look at this in a metaphorical way), he solves and overcomes them! And this is the part where i feel the most value is; he is still intelligent and has a very colorful and big personality. The TTS is just one aspect of rocky and it doesn't stop him from working together with grace. Disabled people who use TTS are not just their text to speech voice, they are a whole person just like any other. Even though grace eventually learns the eridian language (and kind of destroys this particular interpetation), for the majority of the movie rocky is using the TTS and that's the part i wanted to focus on.
I also noticed about rocky's personality, that even though he is kind of a classic ADHD coded creature that is always jumping around and asking questions and talking, he is not the typical 'dumb ADHD' kind of character we see most of the time, he is in fact very smart and mature and knowledgeable. I like that! It makes the character more multidimensional and fun to explore.
As always, feel free to argue (nicely) !! I'm always open to change my mind and learn new perspectives. This is just a little brainstorming pretty much right after walking out of the cinema.
Also, i haven't read the book (yet...). I'm talking exclusively movie talk in this, though feel free to reference the book if you have something to say!
