“I won’t fall behind. A lot of them are in the afternoon and I have more independent study time this year. It will be fine.” She was quick to assure him. He wouldn’t ask for help, she knew that. And mostly she understood why. He was a real guy’s guy when it came to taking help from others. He would insist on doing it all by himself. Which might work in other situations in life where you were not dealing with post surgery recovery which would take a long while. Or being bound to a hospital bed for a good amount of time.
“I know you are. You can, you just won’t be doing it alone.” Keeping her voice calm, but firm. She was not relenting on this. Like hell if she would be sitting in her dorm, knowing he was here alone and in pain. She guessed his time here would be like that a lot, painful.. he shouldn’t be worried about paperwork and appointments and medicine when he was teaching himself how to walk properly again.
He frowned. She had a boyfriend and a life besides him, he didn’t want her to sit around his apartment helping him. It wasn’t fair. “I don’t even know if I’m going to be staying at school,” he told her honestly. “All of this is going to wipe out my savings, so it might get put on hold for a little while.” Which was fine. It really was. He’d just work hard again, start over. He’d manage it.
There was very little hope of getting her to change her mind when she got that tone, he knew that. But he could still try. Because she didn’t need to waste time with him. Especially when he could do it. He figured it would hurt a lot more later, they probably wouldn’t keep him on the really good painkillers when he left here, but he’d been in pain before. It would be manageable, and he’d work it out.
