Ok, so you know how Fred's bed is very clearly supposed to be a life raft? [ it's more obvious in the concept art example + an actual image of a life raft that looked the closest to his bed for comparison ]

So, and hear me out, what if it was originally one of wedgie's first attempts to leave the island? Maybe fred turned out to be tired on that specific day and just choose it as his new sleeping spot like a pet choosing to sleep in a the most inconvenient spot out of multiple choices of where to sleep.

And since Fred's basically a god, wedgie just let him keep it not wanting to risk anything since it was his first attempt at leaving, so it became the reason why fred just subconsciously prevents wedgie from leaving out of any of the other islanders, cause he just assumed it was a gift and grew a subconscious attachment to wedgie because of it.
