Cure Vol.223 - キズ(KIZU) performance “Visual” live report (Feb 2022)
When you hear the word VISUAL, what comes to mind?
Is it the intense sound? A storm of headbanging shaking the floor? Or perhaps the dazzling appearance of the performers?
Whatever it is, those who have felt that shock are the ones who fall in love with visual kei and eventually step onto the stage themselves. Each person carries their own story, and sometimes, those memories become the very pillars that support them through life.
That’s exactly the kind of power I felt from VISUAL, the Kizu solo show held at LINE CUBE SHIBUYA.
As each member entered, they embodied the history of visual kei: Kyonosuke’s spiked hair, Yue’s frilly shirt, and Reiki’s short pants. Finally, Lime appeared, raising a large black flag boldly inscribed with VISUAL in white letters.
With a sharp shout of “Let’s go!”, they launched into their first single Oshimai, transforming the sold-out audience into a sea of headbanging. “Why am I even alive?” Lime cried out in anguish. During the instrumental break, Reiki furiously strummed his guitar atop the platform like a man possessed.
Then they performed pain-filled signature songs like Steroid and Kizuato. Yue rumbled the low end with his five-string bass, standing completely still, while Kyonosuke blasted out lightning-fast beats in Human Error with raw aggression. Each member had a totally different playing style, and that contrast was captivating. It perfectly demonstrated what they had said in the interviews—that there’s meaning in each member expressing themselves in their own way on stage.
Most notably, since this live was titled VISUAL, the setlist ended up being composed almost entirely of singles. That fact alone shows just how consistently Kizu has carried the torch for visual kei in everything they do.
In Buta, with a very visual-kei shout “Come at me with all you’ve got!”, they stirred up the crowd, making them bounce to the upbeat rhythm, raise their fists, and enjoy the moment together. For Kizu, having fun together is directly connected to living together.
In complete darkness, Lime alone began to sing and play guitar—a performance of Tsumi so raw and painful that even clapping seemed inappropriate.
Following that, the band played Jusei, a song packed with a fierce message to society, leading into Heisei, where Lime shouted: “Leave behind proof that you lived!” “Will you live together with me?”
Although he might seem to be singing about despair, underneath it all is an intense thirst for life. That very contradiction is likely the reason Kizu continues to deeply captivate so many fans.
During Jigoku Lime yelled: “Let your life bloom in this hell!” and the stage lights, which at first resembled searing flames, turned into a light of salvation. It was a magnificent transformation from negative to positive as Lime said: “Even if you have no voice, I still hear you. Come at me with everything you've got!”
Up to this point, the show had been marked by a triple threat of fast, heavy, and high sound. But in the final song of the main set, Strawberry Blue, everything changed.
Lime’s vocals turned tender and restrained, filled with aching emotion. As he said, “I love you,” the minimalist arrangement and medium tempo flowed beneath a shower of falling confetti, creating a scene so beautiful it felt heavenly.
As Lime repeated the words “Come, this way” over and over, it was as if he was casting an irresistible spell. This too was a new door that Kizu had just opened.
Then came the encore, which began with their new song Anagura—a deep reflection on how one chooses to use their life, accompanied by vivid, pop-style video visuals.
After that, Lime addressed the audience: “Would you let me share my thoughts about ‘VISUAL’?” He went on to share a personal story about a friend who had passed away—the one who had first led him into this world.
“After graduating high school, I was going through a rough patch,” Lime confessed.
“I didn’t work, I didn’t study. Then one day, a certain guitarist told me ‘With your voice, you can definitely make it,’ and that’s how I got into visual kei.”
He then introduced the keepsake guitar: “This belonged to Mikuru, the guitarist.”
Next, the band performed Milk, with Lime shouting, “Take in our VISUAL to the fullest and carry it home with you!” It was no illusion that something sparkled in his eyes as he occasionally looked up toward the sky.
The final song was Juuku, a reflection of the time before Lime was saved by him, when he was standing on the edge of despair. As he strummed an acoustic guitar, it felt as if he was bringing a chapter of his life to a close through this performance.

Lime 'Visual' encore full MC (2022.01.08)
Are you alive?!
I completely forgot… everything I was planning to say.
So much applause... Feels like I got a lifetime’s worth of it. Thank you very much.
So… today, I came here with this title, "Visual."
I’m sure that everyone here has their own personal connection to this name, this word. Maybe that's why we're all here today.
This might take a while, but… Would you mind listening to my thoughts on "Visual"?
I’m a bit clumsy, so I don’t know if I’ll say it well…
but please, just hear me out.
There was a time I first thought maybe I should try being in a band. It was after I graduated high school.
I was going through a rough patch. I wasn’t in a band. I wasn’t working.
Anyone here like that? Someone like the old me? …No?
At that time, a certain guitarist told me:
"With your voice, you can make it." "I know you can."
And that’s how I ended up getting into Visual Kei.
But no matter how many years passed, my voice never felt good enough.
I struggled so much.
And the guy who pulled me into this scene…
Even after moving to Tokyo, he never stopped believing in me.
"If it’s you, I know you can make it."
If it wasn't for him, I probably wouldn’t be standing here today. I wouldn’t have met any of you. I know I’m getting all sentimental, but…
He’s actually not in this world anymore.
I don’t know… I feel like he tricked me, led me all the way here.
No matter how hard I tried, I could never quite make it.
But today, I finally feel like maybe… maybe I can.
Thank you very much.
I know this is really selfish, but I brought a precious guitar—a keepsake—with me. So today, I thought I’d play here together with him. Please, let’s do this.
Mikuru, the guitarist!
Isn’t this color ridiculous? (laughs)
I hated it.
This was the first custom-made guitar he ever ordered.
And even now, I still don’t get it.
"Why would you go through the trouble of ordering a custom guitar… just to make it this color?"
There had to be better choices! That’s what I always thought.
And you know what? It sounds terrible.
Like, really bad.
But when he got this guitar, he said, "It’s still new, but in about ten years, it’ll sound amazing."
It’s been a long time since then… but it still sounds terrible (laughs).
I always called Mikuru "Milk, Milk."
And today, I’ve brought his guitar down from heaven, and I’ll be playing with him once again.
Let's go! Take in our "Visual" to the fullest and carry it home with you!

IG story: "During the performance, I noticed a scratch on the back of the guitar neck.
I tried so hard to hold myself together but I couldn’t stop everything from pouring out.
Yesterday felt just like the shock of hitting a guitar you just got.
When there is another performance I absolutely need you to see, I’ll come wake you up. Until then, good night.
“Milk flows through my veins again today.”"
