Ok 2018, you can calm down a bit.
For the 3 PhD applications I’ve submitted since the LGBTSTEMinar in Jan, I currently have interviews for two, and I’m waiting on a reply for the third...
I think next thursday is gonna be the best day of my entire life tbh
reblog for next thursday to be the best day of your life
Happiness Will Come To You.
when tho
When You Least Expect It. Probably Late March
reblog for happiness to come for you in late march!
I reblogged this last year and I hung out with blink-182 backstage on March 30. Reblogging again because it worked the first time.
honestly, last year one of the best days of my life happened in late March
I have my interview with Disney this week…
I reblogged this a couple weeks ago, and then found out I finally got approved for a house and i move in at the end of March!
this post literally got me my new job
If Scientific Journals Were Honest
Nature: 90% whatever’s hot in bio right now, 10% other
Science: 2 pages of a really cool story, 50 pages of supplement
Cell: your entire dissertation edited down to 20 unreadable pages
PNAS: papers Academy members couldn’t get into better journals
PLOS one: papers non Academy members couldn’t get into better journals, but open source
eLife: papers people couldn’t get into PLOS one
Nature [insert field]: research that isn’t hot enough for Nature
Physical Chemistry Chemical Physics: we couldn’t decide if we were one field or two
JACS: chemistry you’re pretty sure is cool but honestly you’re not sure you understand
Angewante Chemie: JACS but German
Advances in Physics: scientific journals: a statistical approach
Astrophysical Journal: not nearly enough pictures of space
Actual Journal of Your Field: solid science, interesting, low impact
I’m actually screaming at this.
We’ve decided to submit to Angewandte Chemie International Edition.. It was literally a toss up between that and JACS...
I’ve somehow passed my MSc by Research with Minor corrections.
I don’t even know how.
Me @ myself when I start relapsing:
out of context science
“I’m just going to give up on this little project. A project called my PhD”
“It’s not working” / “have you tried hitting the button?”
“You’ll be happy to know that my batshit theory was proven wrong”
“I’m afraid if I try to restart this computer it will never turn back on”
“they just feed shit to mice and see what kills them”
“It’s faffy, fiddly and you won’t like it” I swear to god this was about an assay, and not intercourse...
Submitted my final version of my MSc thesis this afternoon. Just over 2 weeks early. I do not know how I pulled that one off.
What is the gayest field of science?
If you’re gay and a scientist, tag your field of study
Okay but after seeing this I started doing it too and it’s amazing how many men I’ve run into bc they expected me to move
Gotta try it
I work (and walk) on a college campus. I’ve lost count of how many men I’ve smacked shoulders with.
Recently, I was standing outside my son’s classroom waiting to talk to his teacher. I stood on one side of the hallway, not even close to the center. At some point, a man came walking along. I was standing right in his path, but the hallway was empty, so I logically expected him to swerve around me. Instead he kept walking right toward me, got to me, and stopped, as if waiting for me to get out of his way. I didn’t; I just smiled politely at him. He finally walked around me, clearly annoyed that I hadn’t leapt out of his manly path.
Now I’m wishing I’d leapt aside, taken off my jacket and laid it on the floor before him, then bowed deeply and said, “My Liege!”
I also work at a college campus. I smack shoulders sometimes, but I find that if I stare straight ahead and follow the advice below, people get the heck out of the way.
Honestly this post changed how I carry myself when walking alone in public, or in a situation where I’m the one leading. People definitely move for the murder gaze.
Confirmed. I once had to rush back inside a convention hall as the con was closing in order to a retrieve a sick friend’s medication, and I didn’t understand why people in the crowd were jumping out of my way (literally—one guy vaulted a table) until I realized I was dressed as the Winter Soldier and doing the Murder Walk because that’s just how I walk in those boots. I got the meds, got out, and made a mental note.
I repeated the experiment later, wearing the boots but otherwise my usual clothing and mimicking the expression I thought I’d had at that moment. People parted like I was Charlton Heston.
I now wear that style of boots whenever possible. I recently had a man do a double-take as I walked by and ask me, politely, where I had served because I “looked like a soldier.” I’m not current or former military. I was wearing a flowy purple peasant top and looked as un-soldierlike as possible.
Moral of the story: wear comfortable shoes, square your shoulders, and walk like you’ve been sent to murder Captain America.
WALK LIKE YOU’VE BEEN SENT TO MURDER CAPTAIN AMERICA
It’s called the Murder Strut.
IT’S BACK!!!!!! I was searching for this to show my daughter the other day and couldn’t find it. I’m so glad IT’S BACK!! I will always reblog the Murder Strut!!
A guy on a bike went around me because he could tell I had no intention of moving. Thanks to this post.
This post went from Scientific to Feminist to Educational to HILARIOUS!
#make men get the fuck out of the way 2k17
I do this now. Stand my ground. Men look flabberghasted that i wont move out of the way. The most annoying thing is when i’m walking along holding Superpups hand (he’s 2.5 years old), and people walk right up to us and expect to go between us… so for me to let go of my toddlers hand for the sake of them. One person i actually had to put my free hand out and onto their chest to block the person to stop before they ploughed into us.
This genuinely works. I’m 5′3, size 8. I terrify most of the male members of academic staff because I’m wearing resting bitch face, am carrying a box full of science and the sheer speed at which I walk.
Reblog if you ARE a woman in STEM, SUPPORT women in STEM, or ARE STILL BITTER about Rosalind Franklin not getting credit for discovering the structure of DNA and the Nobel prize going to Watson and Crick instead.
nerdgirlnarrates replied to your post “I see a lot of students on here, both grad and undergrad, who seem…”
every time someone says that students are coddled, I would like to direct them to the suicide rates for students
seriously :(
and also how mental illness is absurdly prevalent in grad school (1/3 of phd students are at risk or will develop some sort of mental illness)
like… this isn’t a situation to be taken lightly or falsely.
My brain is mushy, for this time of a Friday evening, but perhaps what puts us at risk of MH issues, also makes us good in academia?
beep boop new url
that wasnt taken? really?
it was a few months ago but i guess not anymore haha!
Aren’t they sigma aldrich millipore now?
Probably. I think they might be. The Sigma lady might’ve said it something about it at the RSC organised organic chemistry shindig in March?
how to be a STEM wlw
Enter the science to lesbianism pipeline
I still can’t believe a) I pulled that off, and b) that David wants to write my thesis up into a journal article.
11 days until I leave.
Broke 19.5k words in my thesis yesterday.
