Project #2 - THE LOOP (FOREVER)
Here are all ten gifs I created. I used some photos I’d taken over the last few months. The one of my son on the swings is probably the one closest to creating “The Loop”
Each of these gifs in the set is very expressive. I appreciate that they show your personality. Several have a pretty good loop to them as well.
We process thousands of still images everyday. People no longer take time to acknowledge and appreciate images. This series hopes to explore the relationship between nature, technology and self.
The colors in this gif set are stunning. The orientation change in several of the certainly drew me to them initially in trying to understand them. After that they began to make me feel a bit uneasy, maybe due to the speed of the loop.
Project #4 performance art
From what I can tell this is your feet/legs in a shower, The changing water color makes me want to know more. What are you washing off yourself? Initially, it seems to be blood, then it becomes black. It honestly made me think of bath bomb videos, but my not understanding somehow made me want to appreciate it more.
Project 4: Performance Art
Reflection.
I chose to demonstrate a self video of circling a mirror around me, manipulating what viewers can see with the mirror. When facing the mirror towards myself, it represents a self reflection, while still in control of what I see in front of me, watching the background, light and reflection change behind me. When facing the mirror towards the viewers, I intended to create an interactive following to watch what is reflected on the mirror, and what is shown in perspective depending on which way I faced towards the viewer. Towards the end of the performance, I face the mirror back towards the lense to show another perspective of what had been recording my performance art, representing another juxtaposition of the initial “reflection” process.
Watching the movement in the reflections of the mirror is fascinating, to say the least. Your unique approach to this project has made me want to incorporate more use of them in my own works going forward. What was your inspiration for using a mirror? Overall, great job!
I was really excited about this project going into it, but creating these became pretty frustrating. I’ve never used Photoshop before this class, and the learning curve has definitely been pretty steep/ involved me wanting to chuck my computer across my apartment. Luckily, I think a lot of the issues I was having got worked through while working on these GIFs. I started out using the camera on my two and a half year old android phone, which takes pretty horrible video, so I was having to do a lot of adjustments in Photoshop. I was eligible for an upgrade, so I now have a newer phone and should have better luck recording video for the next two modules! Big life changes. I was also having a lot of difficulty with Tumblr, but I think a lot of the problem was the internet strength in my apartment, so I will be going to coffee shops to upload on the regular for the next few weeks, aha.
I started out this project interested in creating GIFs that could act in opposition to the way GIFs normally act and make the viewer pause and slow down with a small, insignificant thing that I found beautiful. I had the idea of Norwegian slow television in the back of my mind throughout working on these, and wanted to provoke the same sort of feeling I get after I’ve been staring at burning embers in a fire for a while. I definitely don’t think I succeeded, aha, but I think the one of my cat flicking her ears got close to what I was hoping to do.
I like the relaxing feel. My favorite would be the ghost door closing. It almost makes you want to get up and close it faster! But it is slowly balanced in its movements. I like that instead of having the movements in the gifs be loud and in your face, they are subtle and gentle.
These gif make me think of living pictures. I really enjoy them as well. Them feeling more like photos adds to how special they are in being loops.

This is like… the most claustrophobic situation imaginable. I love it! Totally nightmare-ish.
I agree! This is honestly how I feel driving through tunnels, they never end and are always a bit panic and claustrophobia inducing.
Forever 4D
This gif captures that moment in fireworks that I find most enjoyable, the full reach of each ember in the explosion. The loop is also very appealing to watch.

Reading 4
The article by Rosalie Goldberg made some wonderful points about performance arts. They are not readily contained in one category. This makes it hard to define them from those observing, but for an artist, it grants them a chance to act without limitations. This should be viewed as inspiration on how to push the boundaries of what is known. Yet, all too often these arts go unnoticed or misunderstood because they may seem so unfamiliar. Performance art should be viewed as critically and with the same fervor as other arts.

Where the lines become blurred. Where I didn’t know how anything happened. Where everything felt like white noise.
Reading 3
The history of projection explored by Sean Cubitt was very enlightening. The extent to which projection has been used throughout time is so vast, yet modern works often rely on one branch of its history, cinematography. I agree that there is more to explore in the world of projection to show a different view of the world around us.
The selection from our text explores time. Time has been shown in many ways throughout the history of art. But conveying how long the true moment is often difficult in a two-dimensional media. An interesting thought mentioned that has stuck with me is how relative time is. An hour in one context may seem like merely a few moments, while in others an hour may seem like forever.

Reading 2
After reading the articles given that discussed the significance of gifs and how the use of them is so diverse I began to reflect on what I thought of them as. Prior to these articles, my initial thought was to gifs, or gif sets that were memes that are shared through various social media. Then I began to think that social media such as Vine could be considered a media of exclusively gifs. It indeed is a means of cultural expression and communication. They are used as art, as commentary, and made simply for the sake of it. I feel that gifs are very appealing due to their simple and clear nature.
