PROJECT #3 - VANISHING AND BECOMING

The idea was to create a one-minute video art piece that focuses on abstraction, duration, light, and sound. I recorded the light shinning on my kitchen table as it was passing through a glass of water on the tabletop. I edited the video in Adobe Premiere Pro. The color was added during the editing process. I wanted the heavier hits to have more saturation in the right places. The video was captured on iPhone 6s Plus. I do not own the rights to the featured music. The music heard is from the intro to Pink Floyd’s “TIME” from their record Dark Side of the Moon.

I love stuff like this that captures light moving in an abstracted way.  Good work with the timing, as well.  I think the video might have been more effective for me if you picked a lesser known song, but that might be in part because I’ve listened to that album so many times.

Beautiful use of color. I like the music that goes with it. And the shape of the water reflections almost look like guitar strings in itself.

I was really excited about this project going into it, but creating these became pretty frustrating.  I’ve never used Photoshop before this class, and the learning curve has definitely been pretty steep/ involved me wanting to chuck my computer across my apartment.  Luckily, I think a lot of the issues I was having got worked through while working on these GIFs.  I started out using the camera on my two and a half year old android phone, which takes pretty horrible video, so I was having to do a lot of adjustments in Photoshop.  I was eligible for an upgrade, so I now have a newer phone and should have better luck recording video for the next two modules!  Big life changes.  I was also having a lot of difficulty with Tumblr, but I think a lot of the problem was the internet strength in my apartment, so I will be going to coffee shops to upload on the regular for the next few weeks, aha.

I started out this project interested in creating GIFs that could act in opposition to the way GIFs normally act and make the viewer pause and slow down with a small, insignificant thing that I found beautiful.  I had the idea of Norwegian slow television in the back of my mind throughout working on these, and wanted to provoke the same sort of feeling I get after I’ve been staring at burning embers in a fire for a while.  I definitely don’t think I succeeded, aha, but I think the one of my cat flicking her ears got close to what I was hoping to do.

I like the relaxing feel. My favorite would be the ghost door closing. It almost makes you want to get up and close it faster! But it is slowly balanced in its movements. I like that instead of having the movements in the gifs be loud and in your face, they are subtle and gentle.

4d performance

After looking at other Artist’s work, such as Marina Abramovic and Yoko Ono, I was overwhelmed by the vulnerability of the artist’s in the moment.  I recorded myself sleeping throughout the night because it is when I am most vulnerable.  The performance is the act of posting it on tumblr.

MODULE 4 Final Project: Performance Art

Module 4: Performance documentation

“Penance” (July 2016)

I took inspiration from Marina Abramovic’s early work for this performance, drawing on themes of physical exertion and exhaustion as metaphor (especially for mental anguish). Two nights ago I hurt someone very close to me, and I have had difficulty getting past the guilt and repairing the damage I caused. The classic “running into a wall” image/metaphor felt like a promising place to start, which I then combined with the very real physical action of slamming my body into it. I’m using exhaustion and physical pain to open the discussion around catharsis, guilt, and emotional damage.

This piece is interesting. I'm happy that you kept the camera still and had no noises besides your grunting. I think this is a very emotional piece, you can hear the anguish of what you feel in every grunt you make.

Artist Statement 1

I am an avid cyclist, and at times it is hard to find inspiration to keep on pedaling. This is true of many pursuits, both physically and mentally. I chose to produce these works in this manner because they are small and simple phrases, but they are encouraging. I believe in the power of a few words of hope, and felt these phrases would be adept to give that small nudge. Though the path may be difficult, the goal should remain clear. This influenced my font choice in choosing a serif, but wanting something that seems a bit weathered.

I like these, I think my favorite ones are the stop signs because it uses what is already there. This keep going towards your goal is very appropriate for finals week!!!

I like your comparison to the light and the color. It makes me think more of those sound synthesizers for your computer. But I like your explanation and it makes me think of the old style tinker bell in Peter Pan plays. Where she is a light and when she responds it glows bigger and brighter with each word.

For my final performance piece, I kind of wanted to shoot it from own my eyes, but also from what my day looks like. Lately I have felt on a constant hamster wheel of work, and class. My life consists of going in and out of my apartment, up and down my elevator and a lot of walking. I felt that the songs were appropriate for the video in their context. It also concludes with how I will feel after finals end, exhausted, spent and ready to sleep.

Love the fluidity of all of these dance and martial art Gifs. You can tell that the person finds gracefulness and fluidity calming. As most of us should, it helps our minds to watch one solid line of motion, instead of a jagged, unfinished line of motion.

Forever 4D

For my Forever 4D project, I tried to use things that everyone could relate too. Dogs, beer, fireworks and being silly. What is better than watching a dog chase it’s tail, a beer that you want to try, or someone who could be your friend celebratory dance for ping pong. I have always been obsessed with the DC character Harley Quinn and with the movie Suicide Squad coming out this summer, I felt it was appropriate for the project, fun to do and something that matches what is being shown on social media networks lately.
