anyone on this website still ship teal oranges? 😭
imagine trusting someone so much that you ask them to be your literal voice bc you’re in disguise and can’t talk. And eventually you fall in love with them and give up your revenge mission because they’ve shown you that you’re allowed to pursue your own happiness, and your happiness is being with them. But then you’re torn apart and now the writers just kind of want everyone to forget that all happened. That’s what happened to Jim Jimenez
If I have to be normal about what happened to TealOranges (not telegraphed anywhere in season 1), then the Izzy Stans have to be normal about his thematically consistent death. It’s only fair

Okay, I was writing another essay in the tags and then just decided to go for it here lol. I had said I wasn't really going to say more beyond being really disappointed, but apparently I have too many thoughts.
Yeah, I don't understand why they got broken up either!! We had this beautiful love story in Season 1, and then it just... disappeared. They got changed to 'best friends,' and it really felt like the romance got written off. We got some beautiful moments hinting at a polycule, but that felt more like something the actors did than something written into the script.
And if they did break up - which, again, David Jenkins has said in an interview - we didn't even get a scene showing that properly. We got ONE conversation between Jim/Olu this season, and it read more like a "hey I kissed someone else, are we still fine?" "of course we are" than anything. The rest was just implication, and lack of something solid.
The hints of a polycule were amazing, but like, god they weren't enough. I adored episode 6, and really wish we'd had more interactions between just Jim/Olu, and just Jim/Archie, and any conversation between Jim/Olu/Archie that was about them and not someone else.
And then even the snippets of polycule we got in the background got torn away. Episode 7 and the Zheng parts were... really not my favourite. They didn't feel like a "welcoming someone into the polycule" to me. And the way that Jim/Olu having had sex gets turned into a joke for the second time this season was so infuriating.
And then from then on out, Jim and Olu just don't interact. (I might be misremembering, I haven't done a second watch through, but I don't remember them together in Ep 8 at all.)
And Samson and Vico have such GOOD chemistry!!! Olu and Jim were so fun on screen together! All we got were some background shots and - really?? That's it??
There's also the way that Jim and Olu both felt flattened this season, and shoved into the background. (Not just them, it was a consistent problem with every character but Ed, Stede, and Izzy, but I noticed Jim and Olu most. And I know part of it is limited budget, and a focus shifted to Izzy to give him redemption arc, but it also felt like a frustrating shift in writing.) So much of their characterization from last season seemed just gone. Where is smart leader Olu who advises Stede? Jim's arc with the siete gallos is really just over that easily??
I have more complaints about them, and about the season. But yeah, their relationship being effectively erased made me so upset. There were things I really loved about this season, and I need to do a rewatch so I can find more things. But overall? Still disappointing as a tealoranges fan.
My ONE saving point is that from rumours of ppl who've met Vico at cons (and given the very little they can say right now with the strikes), they seem just as on the polycule train as the fandom. They've said that "Jim has two hands", and wore teal and orange at MCM this weekend, and I'm sure there are other things, but those are the two I know most of.
So yeah - Jim/Olu is still real, even if it's not in the writing. The polycule is, too. And it's damn disappointing that it got erased. It's frustrating that all we got this season for them were tiny scraps. I'm still upset about it, and I know it's going to affect my excitement for a third season.
Time to write all the fanfic fixing it, I guess XD
Huge agree with all of the above. How did we go from having an open, slowburn, adorable, charming, NBLM relationship between two characters who love each other to like... whatever happened in S2? Anytime Archie or anyone else brought up Jim and Oluwande having sex as a joke, I felt like I was being laughed at for loving the relationship that was... again. Canon. On-screen. Supported by the narrative and by multiple plot points. Hell, even Jim's Nana approved. It wasn't like we were making up come kind of chaotic red-string slash pairing based on some homoerotic subtext. They were shown being in love, kissing, and cuddling after having sex on screen! It was pointed out by multiple other characters! I felt like I was being gaslighted for some reason.
Jim's love for Oluwande is shown as being a major reason why they decided to leave behind their obligation to commit revenge and try to live life on their own terms, which is major growth for their character. I joined the fandom here primarily to have some place to engage with these characters and their relationship since it is probably my favorite canon relationship between characters of all time.
I would have loved, in this season, to have more time with each of them developing apart from each other. With the exception of Jim talking to Jackie, and Oluwande scamming with Frenchie, they spent most of their screen time in S1 together and were almost defined by each other such that it was hard to separate them. I also loved their scenes together because they have such a natural chemistry with each other and both of them understand what the other wants/needs and they have these sweet fumbling conversations about what they mean to each other and how to negotiate that within the circumstances they live in, which is just so real to me as someone going through the same thing. Instead we got... no real screen time for either of them, and both of them used as scaffolding to prop up new characters. Anytime Oluwande and Jim are together Archie is just, also, aggravatingly there.
It was upsetting to go into the tags every week and see half the fans mourning the fact that Oluwande/Jim had apparently broken up, and the other half celebrating that Oluwande/Jim/Archie or Oluwande/Jim/Archie/Zheng had just been 'confirmed'! It speaks to the fact that nobody understood what was going on with these characters, because the dialogue was impossible to parse and the on-screen interactions were confusing. I still don't know whether any of these characters are actually dating or in a relationship, and to what extent, which is a shame because the narrative has made it so that understanding these characters' romantic relationships is essential to understanding the characters, since the four of them have very little narrative presence or plot this season outside of their romantic entanglements.
I don't know anything about Archie, I know very little about Zheng, and neither Jim/Archie or Oluwande/Zheng have in my opinion any chemistry together or any real narrative evidence for why they should be together, why they are even attracted to or value each other. We rely completely on background scenes with Vico, Madeleine, and Samson doing their best to shape their characters in the absence of meaningful screen time or dialogue. I wanted to be excited for the possibility of a throuple/OT3 because I think Madeleine Sami is great. However, she was given essentially nothing to work with and almost no lines. Ultimately, I don't really care for Zheng either because the writers set her up as this competent, charming pirate queen and then sabotaged her so utterly with the last two episodes that she comes across as a fool. And Ching Shih (the real Zheng Yi Sao) is my favorite IRL pirate of all time; they really did her dirty. No shade to Ruibo Qian who is a charismatic and talented actress and did her best with what she was given.
tl;dr: Why did they do this to tealoranges fans??
