i think we should talk about the parallels between rimmer and kochanski (specifically kk2) more.

the most obvious similarities are they’re both posh and are huge driving forces in lister’s life, but it goes much deeper than that. they’re both symbols of desperation - trying to attain an ultimately unreachable goal. for rimmer, it’s passing his exams, becoming an officer and finally making his family proud. for kochanski, it’s getting back to her universe and reuniting with her dave. we never see them achieve these goals, and we never will (at least not on screen for kochanski).

but that’s not the only thing. they both fake their deaths in order to get a second chance at life. another opportunity to do something worthwhile, perhaps to chase an entirely new goal. and they both reappear in the dreams of lister.

the only difference between the two, is one came back.
