For those who don't know, Rafah Crossing is closed. Meaning Palestinians in the Gaza Strip are technically not allowed to go into Egypt through Rafah Crossing (with exceptions, like holding a foreign passport) so in order to evacuate, Palestinians need to bribe Egyptian border security officials. The standard price used to be about $5000 - 7000 per person but some Palestinians have been told to pay $10,000 per person just to cross the border, forget other expenses like food and boarding.

For a group of people who are enduring genocide and the complete destruction of their homes that money is impossible to raise without the help of fundraising. That and the collapse of the UNRWA is the reason you're seeing so many Gofundmes nowadays. The entire aid system is gone with the exception of local aid organisations that have limited reach.

So if you see a credible fundraiser, please at the very least share it so it can reach more people. This list by @el-shab-hussein is a good place to start.

Feel free to uncheck these when you sign, but I received the petition by getting on Rashida Tlaib's email updates list. I think it's good to follow at least hers (I have unsubscribed to some afterward like HollywoodDemocrats).

Going on a long sidebar here, but:

I'm also subbed to my local politicians' email lists, even & especially if I disagree with them--I want to know what they're up to and what they think is important enough to share. I put them on a separate "spam" email address I check every couple days, you can also set up email filters to let them skip your inbox.

Along with other advocacy, action, and donations to more directly help Palestinians, consider following Rashida Tlaib for more action like this. While I find it unlikely that a single petition will fully stop the White House from funding Israel, I trust her judgement as a representative here in sharing this with us. As it gains traction this petition may convince some of the politicians who are silent on this issue beyond basic things like voting Nay to a bill that would give Israel additional "emergency" spending money beyond normal DOD limits on Feb 6th to actually speak up and advocate against the genocide.

(That bill didn't pass, by the way, it was ~40 votes shy of the 2/3 majority). A whole 46 Democrats voted Yea, consider asking them why, especially if they represent you!

There's a reason Rashida Tlaib was censured back in November, if you're following the news outside of Tumblr you'll know that there's a pretty prominent narrative that anti zionism = anti semitism and pro Palestine = pro terrorism. Which is ridiculous, but for all your local politicians know this is what the majority of their constituents believe. That's why I keep up with the news and continue tell my reps my opinions even if I only get automated responses from them--I believe if everyone did this it would begin to change the narrative. Remember when Pro Palestine videos were outnumbering zionist ones on TikTok, the site had to openly deny altering the algorithm to favor Palestine.

TikTok's word won't convince your politicians who think the site is Chinese spyware, or the ones who think it's full of children who haven't really done their research and can't or won't vote in the upcoming elections.

So--tell them directly. Sign this petition, but if you don't already know, find out your local representatives' recent actions and words on the Palestinian Genocide. Ask them to speak up, ask them to call for permanent ceasefire, to call for the US to obey the ICJ ruling, to quit all funding to Israel, to resume funding to UNRWA. While you're at it, ask them about any other issues you care deeply about.

Vote blue no matter who is bullshit, and it's probably the Democrat's best slogan right now. Vote blue if they align with your values. Tell them your plan, and tell them what your values are. (If you get spammed by Democrats you'll know their common questions in election years: what is your voting plan, and what issues are most important to you?) The ones who care want to know. The ones who don't can ignore a few emails but it's harder ignore hundreds of thousands.

This is all free, and this is much more influential than that one "click daily to donate .00001 cent of ad revenue to Palestine" website. You have limited time and resources as a person. If you're privileged enough to be a citizen in the US you have some level of influence over the people who represent you beyond casting a vote every few years. Those representatives have some level of influence over US budget and policy. So I urge you to spend your time and resources wisely.

50,000 is not the end goal!

As we hit the next goal on that site the goal number will go up--this is intentional. It's part of the "marketing" to get you to sign. It feels good to sign and contribute when we're close to the goal, so it encourages you to drop your name and email.

This method is good because there is no real end goal--the real goal is as many legitimate signatures as it takes to see change.

Previously the White House was required to respond to a petition if it hit 100k signatures within 30 days. While this isn't true anymore, it would be nice to hit that goal--Tlaib first shared this petition 10 days ago. If everyone reblogs, copies the link, and then shares with their non-Tumblr friends, we can get there easily.

When it comes to local petitions for actions such as putting things on a ballot, they spend time and money to verify signatures. So use your real name and zip code in case this gets big enough that the signatures are questioned & verified.
