Imagine Camila and Hunter.
Four children (Not including Luz) shows up on her doorstep, with her daughter she hadn't been able to hold in her arms for months.
And then she sees Hunter.
Hunter, with deep eye-bags that are larger than are any of her colleagues - and she works in a vet clinic. Hunter, with clothes that look like they've been haphazardly grabbed out of a dumpster and thrown on. Hunter, with a slash on his shirt and she can't even *think* about his scar-
And he has one arm wrapped around this small, scared looking kid, and she knows that this scarred child has found a way into her heart already.
So she tries her hardest to be gentle. With soft, quite offers of having warm milk and watching documentaries because she's seen him in the living area after nightmares. With quietly stitching up his wounds. Anything so he never has to think he'll be anything like that Belos.
And eventually, she has a child who will come up to her after work and give her terrible stitched shirts, has one who will smile instead of stiffen when she enters the room.
There is still times when he will fall silent and stare at the wall, still times when he will have that confused expression when she doesn't give out 'discipline.' (Read: Abuse) But now he's an awkward, but utterly passionate child instead of a soldier, and that's all she can ask for.
And maybe she has adoption papers that she keeps hidden in her drawer, but nobody has to know about that.
