Unlike the image she portrayed on stage in front of lights and cameras, confrontational situations brought slight discomfort to Yezi. Despite the butterflies in the pit of her stomach, her head was tilted to the side with a smile as she sat across from the interviewer. The interviewer had a slight puzzled look to his face as he examined hers, and Yezi could clearly see it and knew exactly what was coming her way.
“I’m shocked to see you smiling so much! Usually when we see you on Unpretty Rapstar and in your music videos, you seem very angry. A lot of rappers seem angry these days.”
Yezi chuckled, in her head cursing the entertainment industry and their manipulative and deceiving ways of portraying her and other fellow idols.
“This industry has a certain view of rappers - they all wear baggy clothing if they are not idols, always look angry or look like trouble, and have no manners or respect. That is not the case. A lot of the times, especially with underground artists, they are using this art form to convey a message. And a lot of those times, that message needs to be heard so of course, we will be serious. But that doesn’t mean that we aren’t happy people and don’t know how to smile. I love to smile and I love to laugh and that has nothing to do with me being a rapper. As to my image on Unpretty Rapster 2...there is a lot of deceptive editing. We’re tired so we look tired and they edit it into a scene to make it seem like we are angry and don’t like each other. I actually made a good amount of friends through that show and I’m thankful for the experience. But at the same time it was slightly frustrating because of this image misconception - and I honestly don’t blame you or others for thinking like this.
I actually like to consider myself a nice person. I love to meet new people and there are some pretty unexpected traits of mine that don’t fit this ‘rapper mold’ the industry has created.”
“Ah really? That’s very interesting. What would some of these unexpected traits be?”
“Well, instead of loving darker hues, I enjoy light yellows, blues, and greens. I really enjoy reading and Harry Potter is hands down my favorite series. Poetry is also so lovely, and I like to compare and contrast it’s characteristics to rap a lot. Amusement parks have me acting like a little child...all things you would expect out of any normal person. That really is what I am at the end of the day.”
