Just finished watching Off Campus and it's funny how people who dislike the show are calling it a Heated Rivalry rip-off when it's literally Greek for Gen Z. Theater kids mingling with the jocks? Greek did it 20 years before with the nerdy main characters befriending the frat bros. The hockey really is a background set, the show as its core is about the college experience in a way that is both trashy wish-fulfillment but also weirdly relatable (I've seen a youtuber say that the show is a weird mix of juvenile and grown but I think that's the point, that's really how I'm feeling rn as a 25 year-old). I'm not sure the second season will manage to balance both aspects as well as it did for now, those eight episodes may have very well been a fluke. But I'm interested to see where this goes next.
I also liked how despite being branded a "raunchy" show, it never felt exploitative to me. We didn't see graphic scenes of Hannah's assault or of the domestic violence. It was hinted at through visual storytelling (the panic attacks of Hannah, bruises of Cindy, the hole in the wall). There were also equal amounts of male and female nudity too. I think the reason why Allie and Dean's dance went so viral was because it was as much about the hotness of the woman as it was about the hotness of the man. Idk I feel like this is a far cry from shows like 13 Reasons Why and Euphoria in that aspect.
However it's still quite telling that Greek had more diversity (especially in regards to skin color) despite coming out in 2007. The entertainment industry is really conforming itself to Trump's America I guess.
