At first, I was so 😠, but reading this thread toward the end had me like:
If you ever feel like you must be the most unobservant person in the world, remember: I once spent half a year failing to notice that my new favourite restaurant was a money-laundering front for the Ukrainian mafia.
(I didn’t think anything of it at the time, but in retrospect, the fact that it was always dead no matter the time of day - I think the busiest I ever saw it was five people, myself included - well, that should have been a tipoff. Also, the waitstaff kept calling me “Mr. Prokopetz”, which I had assumed was just part of the restaurant’s gimmick, but given that “Prokopetz” is a Ukrainian surname, I’m now force to wonder whether they’d thought I was, you know, in the business. I just liked the pierogi!)
What I need to know is how on earth did OP finally realize his favorite restaurant was a money-laundering front for the mafia.
I’d like to say I put together the clues, but in reality, I just showed up one day to find that the place had been indefinitely shut down, and later learned it was because the managers had all been arrested.
What I really want to know is how good the food was?
Excellent, if your tastes run to the “heavy cream and too much garlic” end of the spectrum.
Every crime front I’ve ever eaten at has had completely amazing food, honestly. I am pretty convinced that if you want to open a front, you don’t choose “restaurant” as your front-business unless you have a relative who loves to cook.
It tickles me that this is evidently a sufficiently common experience that people find it relatable. (Seriously, check the notes!) We should write reviews or something.
did I just read the line “every crime front I’ve ever eaten at” with my own two eyes
Look, I went to college and lived my early adulthood in a town whose entire thing was import/export, and we had a lot of restaurants that were suspiciously empty except when they were closed and filled with very serious men in nice clothes.
They were usually run by someone who was about the right age to be some adult’s parents or grandparents, and in the case of the two Korean restaurants matching this description, they didn’t speak English. Universally though, they were very pleased to see customers, very proud of their cooking, and very very interested in keeping us far away from the aforementioned serious men in nice clothes. And despite having huge dining rooms and never having more than a couple customers, they never went out of business.
Also, because I am very, very stupid and sometimes don’t think before I talk, I once said loudly, over the phone, while sitting in one of these places, “Hey! Yeah if you want to meet us, we’re eating at [place]. You know…[place]? You totally know it. The Front, on Warwick st!”
The looks I got from every single employee were amazing and then I left.
We had a corner store/deli-place near our apartment in college. Everyone knew they were in on something and no one cared because they looked out for their customers and their neighborhood as a whole.
They started stocking my favorites because I mentioned them within hearing range once, would tell their “vendors” to move out of the way if we stopped in. I walked a different route home and got harassed one night and they asked after me. When they found out what happened, they declared “Consider it taken care of, you should never be afraid around here.” Never happened again.
Everyone needs their friendly neighborhood crime lord.
This is both my favorite and makes me fondly remember home. Less of the eateries, more of the mysterious retail joints that never seem to close despite no one ever buying anything, though. Well. Aside from the juice bar. Didnt last, though.
Wow. My God

I used to live above a pizza shop and the owner was my landlord. Nicest guy I've ever known, and the best damn food, too. I found out about a year ago that he was arrested because the place was a front for the mafia, as well. Now I'm just glad that we'd paid off our backrent we'd owed him.
I’ve been asked a couple times how I do my scar for Cullen, and this is the method I always use. You can make any size, color, or intensity of scar with this method too so it’s really, really versatile and works for any character, any fandom, and any scar.
Supplies:
Rigid Collodion - this is an fx makeup that you can find online or in specialty makeup stores. It’s usually pretty cheap, running about $5-10 for a small bottle
Lip pencil - in neutral pink
Brushes - I like thin, disposable lip brushes
Powder shadows or alcohol paints - any kind will do, you mostly want them in browns, reds, and creams
Setting powder
FX makeup remover - like Telesis or Bond Off. This one is super important. Get real, proper remover.
99% Alcohol (optional, if you’re using alcohol paints)
Cotton Balls

Customer service is a two-way street. If you're a bad customer, chances are that you're going to receive bad service. Most people expect anyone in a service area to be nice to them no matter what, so they take advantage of workers with verbal abuse and overall rudeness. Because of policies most companies have in place, workers find themselves under pressure when they're forced to either stand there and take it, or stand up for themselves and risk termination. Then, if a customer isn't being blatantly rude, there tends to be communication issues. Cashiers aren't verbally informed or asked for cash back (the computer may say, "hey, he's getting cash!", but the cashier may have just started their shift, or another customer may have just cleaned them out and they don't have anything left), food service areas tend to be given vague ideas of what a customer wants (and then get yelled at if it's not done the way they didn't say), and there's an overall expectation that the worker should know exactly how the customer wants things done, even without a single verbal cue. Thirdly, there's the arrogance. Just because you're old, rich, military, or of any other "privileged" status, it does not mean you're more of a person (or better) than the person serving you. You're demanding a service, and they're providing it for you; at least show a little respect and patience. And I guess that's really all it boils down to: respect and patience. You don't have to be über happy or chipper when interacting with any worker, because your mood shouldn't hinder your ability to be a civil, decent human being to another human being. Cashiers, fast food workers, bankers, retail workers, and waitresses (honestly, just anyone you interact with that's working) are all the same as you. We're just trying to survive in this world and keep our heads above the water. So next time you throw your change onto the counter instead of your cashier's waiting hands, yell at someone who didn't know they did something wrong, or yell at someone for something they can't control (prices, equipment breaking, stocking issues, etc.), remind yourself that everyone has a breaking point, and your actions or words may push someone to theirs. Now, as a small note, I'm not saying that service workers SHOULD be rude to customers who mistreat them (professionalism), just that sometimes you really might be bringing it on yourself. TL;DR: Don't be a dick.

I know I don't come on here that often, and I hate posting this, but my mum could really use some help. Her cat rescue was hit by a wave of sicknesses, and she's recently lost a few of the cats. As you can imagine, her vet bills are through the roof, and there's only so much she can do. If you can donate anything, or even just share this and get the word out, it would mean so much to me. Thank you. <3
and in that moment, the entire movie theater burst into tears
i think this was the moment that made most of us despise umbridge more than voldemort
most of us?! don’t you mean ALL of us?? I don’t think even Voldemort liked this bitch!
No one likes Umbridge.
I heard, one time, a dementor kissed her and IT died
Voldemort committed genocide, but Umbridge dared to be female while she abused her power.
The point isn’t that Umbridge was worse than Voldemort; it’s that everyone hates her more. And I think it has nothing to do with her being a woman and everything with being the sort of cruel most of us have actually experienced.
I mean, look at Voldemort. He’s basically Wizard Hitler, which is, obviously, an incredibly terrible thing to be. But most people—especially the younger people in Harry Potter’s target audience—have not had their parents murdered by a xenophobic cult leader. Nor have they fought for their lives against giant snakes, been kidnapped for dark rituals, or watched numerous friends die in front of them. Voldemort’s crimes are numerous, but they’re distant and fantastical, like hearing about a serial killer on the news.
But they have had that one teacher who inflicts extra punishments just because they don’t like you. They’ve complained to parents and authorities only to be ignored. They’ve sat through pointless classes and been silenced when they criticize. Umbridge is that teacher we all hated because she made our lives miserable and we were powerless to stop her. And as we grow out of school, there are still people in positions of power who act like her. The manager who denies your schedule requests and penalizes you for invented infractions. That customer who complains to corporate because their scam didn’t work, and the corporate decision to listen to their story. Cops performing illegal searches because they know you don’t have any proof.
Yes, torturing and killing numerous people is worse than terrorizing a handful of schoolchildren, but Voldemort is the bad guy in a fairy tale. Umbridge is personal.
*drops the mic*
Voldemort is the villain we never hope to face.
Umbridge is the villain we face every day.
You’d think more than a year after this interaction, people would learn to stop asking female cosmonauts sexist questions. And yet, here we are. Russia is sending an all-female group into space — and not only were they just asked how they’d get by without makeup, but what they’d do without men. They shut it down just as quickly.
