The Dark Crystal Headcanon:

Interesting thing my buddy pointed out that lead me to a very sad headcanon. During the scene with the Gruenaks fighting The Scientist, one of the Gruenaks puts a basket over The Scientist’s head. 

When this happens SkekTek start to panic, screaming “NO! Help! Release me!” The interesting thing is, it’s just a wooden basket, it doesn’t pose that much of a threat and he can just take it off. But the moment it goes on The Scientist shakes and thrashes. Why? Because he’s flashing back to the Peeper Beetle Ceremony.

Where they put a cage over his head! SkekTek reacts so badly because they accidentally triggered his past trauma! (I’d like to take a moment to say this in no way excused SkekTek for enslaving and murdering those two poor Gruenaks, he is still a terrible, terrible person.) Thus leads me to my headcanon: SkekTek has severe PTSD/Claustrophobia.

They both probably mix into each other, but if anything covers his head he will freak out. Suddenly he’s back in that cage, unable to fight off the creature eating his eye or his “companions” torturing and laughing at him. Calling him weak and a failure. Suddenly all those memories come back if something he doesn’t want on his head is on his head. He can’t breath, he can’t think straight, he just goes into a blind rage. SkekTek is a very interesting character and this just adds another layer of tragedy to him.

Imagine Tesla is skekTek. He's trying to present his new invention before the unimpressed skekSo & co when the Doctor bursts in and takes him and Sidetic to a space-time adventure. And this is how he got his mechanical arm.

I like how every Skeksis has their own little “human” quirk that extends beyond their role; SkekVar is an oafish bully, Skekekt/SkekOk/SkekLach are an awkward friend trio, SkekSo is philosophical, SkekMal honors others ambitions and SkekTek loves animals and secretly wants to preserve life on Thra. Honestly, I’m glad that of all the Skeksis the Scientist was the most concerned about the darkening. Through his studies, he recognizes the threat the darkening poses to all life on Thra, even themselves. Going so far as to request the emperor to cease his pursuit for immortality, but is ultimately coerced into accepting these methods,(like with everything else he does in the show). 

Note: His bird isn’t trapped in its cage, the door isn’t locked and it with the rest of the animals seem much calmer around him than the other Skeksis.That is until the movie, but Skektek is barely recognizable at that point.
