Anatomy of Performance: QL Edition
Director Ark Saroj reposted this acting technique infographic from shaanema on instagram and I thought it could be fun and informative to connect the different styles with QL. Acting is not a one-size fits all method. Different methods fit different actors. There's not one method that's inherently better than others, although some might be more appropriate for the direction and tone of a work than others. This isn't a battle of who's better. It's a look an appreciation for different approaches to the craft. Most actors don't even rely on a single method, anyways. Everyone listed and plenty who are not listed are incredible performers who commit lots of time and effort to the art of acting.
Classical Acting
Seiyo Uchino: He's played both Hamlet and King Lear in major productions, and the linked interview with the director of his Hamlet production really gets at the heart of the classical approach: use your technique to elevate the text and don't get in the way or distract from it. No real feelings necessary, and certainly no improv.
Side note: For another side of classical performance training Um Apasiri was trained in Likay, traditional Thai theater and dance, and I'm sure some of the Japanese actors have some training in Noh or Kabuki.
Stanislavski System
Apo Nattawin: he describes perfectly Stanislavski's approach that acting involves recalling, understanding, and "experiencing feelings analogous" to the characters in one's own life to reduce the performativity. It's not becoming the character, it's appreciating that the character is a reflection of real feelings and actions that anyone can experience and drawing from those connections.
Chekhov Technique
Tay Tawan: On the promo tour for A Dog and A Plane, Tay Tawan discussed switching back and forth between that series and A Scarlet Heart, using a specific pose to get him into character for both, and then tiktok clips of Mark Pakin and walking around like he had "big balls" for ADAAP in particular. Getting in character was outer work.
Expressionist Acting
Krist Perawat in Wu: This is an approach rarely being utilized in QL. Even the darkness of BoC tends to remain in the realms of realism. But Wu's fantasy allows for Krist to go to extremes, and boy does he commit in one of the most out-there unnerving performances in the genre.
Method Acting
Tor Thanapob: Nanon is well-known for method acting and you can see him discuss it in the clip with Ohm Pawat below, but adding Tor here for people who want another reference. He describes how he uses method, living out as his characters, for developing them.
Physical Acting
Off Jumpol in Burnout Syndrome: Discussed for the public as if Off just needed to look sexy, but Koh's extremely lean body (to my eyes at least) also conveyed his obsessiveness and depression. Other than general muscle-building and weight loss to appear generically attractive, though, physical transformation is a rare thing in the QL industry.
Meisner Technique
Ohm Pawat: Ohm doesn't use the term Meisner, but his description here (in comparison to Nanon's method approach), and Aof Noppharnach's descriptions of Ohm having to do multiple takes because what he felt in the moment of the scene didn't match the direction of the scene seem very much in line with Meisner technique. He's also known to try to make his partners break character to create more authentic moments of interaction.
Comedic Acting
Tanaka Kei in Ossan’s Love: Briefly discussed in this interview--and to be fair most comedic actors don't spend much time articulating some specific technique of comedic acting when it really tends to be in-the-moment sense of timing and exaggeration--but here Tanaka touches on both the elements of taking the character seriously and the ability to react and play with your castmates.
Naturalistic Acting
Billkin: I couldn't find an example of him describing the above perfectly, but he talks about how the process involved developing performance through improv and adapting the script to his own story with PP, both of which are more aligned with naturalistic approaches. Plus, just watch the awkwardness and even ugliness he brings out in his movement choices, speaking, and those famous snotty sobs. Boss Kuno, in general, aims for naturalistic performances from his actors.

Pride Month Tag Game 🌈🏳️🌈
game created by @colourme-feral (here). tagged by @hyeoni-comb here! i'm very late but at least it's still pride month lol.
Pick something, whether it's the main color of a scene or an item in a shot from a ql show or movie that you think of, which corresponds to a color of the rainbow flag: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet.
i do not know who has or hasn't done this so please do it if you'd like!
❤️ red - the heart killers (honestly the first kantbison scene came to mind first but i went with a ... milder gif) 🧡 orange - the rebound 💛 yellow - never let me go 💚 green - clairebell 💙 blue - utsukushii kare (specifically s2) 💜 violet - peaceful property
I'm sure they didn't mean it like that. But they probably mean that I'm the perfect match for you, P'Le. I mean, Khun Lené.
LOVE BEYOND DREAMS, EP5
Trans* Series for Pride Month
(That aren’t Euphoria)
Veneno
I’m often struck by how small the scope of television is; there’s a surface-level approach to diversity resulting in shows and characters that feel intrinsically the same. Veneno is a jolting reminder of how big the world is — how precious, beautiful, fucked-up, and knotty our relationships are with ourselves and with others. At its core, it is simply a story about how far a person is willing to go to self-actualize, because anything less feels like no life at all.”
— E. Alex Jung, “Veneno is a Knockout”
Great Men Academy
“Love's story and desires are so potent and rare to encounter in media anywhere. Trans* allegories get reserved for horror, but this show is a trans* fairytale, with a cottage, a magic wish-granting lake, and full-on duels to prove it. And its elements line up with transness in a way few stories honestly admit. Many people only start to experience gender dysphoria after the start of puberty, for example, when adult sexual traits and hormones start to kick in, aligning with the age Love’s unwanted gender-swap occurs. And there’s plenty more of the less well-known sides of trans experience tucked into the show.”
— Is Great Men Academy a BL?
Druck, Season 3
“David isn’t just “the love interest.” He’s a fully fleshed-out character with his own arc, including a subtle but powerful exploration of gender identity and mental health. The show doesn’t slap you with labels or exposition, rather it lets you notice things, feel things, connect the dots. That kind of storytelling? Rare. And deeply respectful.”
— @tometracker, “Quietly Radical, Deeply Tender”
Smells Like Green Spirit
“It's in being able to spot the queerness of people who can pass! And it's in the joy of confessing trans things to someone for the first time! It's in their stolen make-up experiments! And wondering if they like girls or just want to look like them! And weird tastes in super masculine men! And sure, it's also in the bullying and the dissociation, but it's also being vulgar and ridiculous and running around laughing when you find someone who gets it.”
— “Emerging Transness…”
Infinity Train, Season 2
“Lake is not a passenger. She’s a denizen created by it, as many others were, in order to help the passengers, so that they can solve their issues and leave. Even worse, she’s supposed to be a reflection meant to do nothing more than imitate what her prime (That would be the people they reflect: us) did. But she escapes, and while being chased by the Mirror Police, who want to kill her for that, her journey begins.”
— Luca Cazeaux, “Infinity Train and My Journey as a Non-Binary Person”
3 Will Be Free
“Here, you can see that a trans woman also has a dream, gets hurt, struggles, fights back when pushed against a wall... just... like... any... other... human. Jennie gave life to Mae, her chasing an identity she had dreamed about for so long, the pursuit of what she thinks can make her happy, paying back the kindness of the people that have shown it to her. Her character is one of the most developed in this series. She starts off with a meager job and when the unfortunate happened, she "mans" up. As the series progresses, she becomes tougher and tougher, often times at conflict with morality where it’s currently placed her. Can she attain "justice" by inflicting injustice to others, this is the main theme of her character.“
— MDL user crazysexycoolpal, “3 Will Be Free”
DNA Says Love You
“An intersex person is born with reproductive or sexual anatomy that does not fit the boxes of ‘male’ or ‘female’. In Amber’s case, the doctors and family decided that he could more easily identify as a male and therefore he was subsequently altered and raised to be a boy. So how do you tell your closest friends this kind of secret? Yet, through all of that, whether female or male, WenWen continued to love Le Chien. Picking the name Amber rings of poetry. Amber is a very valuable gem if you will. Amber in fossilized from is tree sap that dries to a clear color and if any living material is in that sap, becomes preserved as if they are alive. We can see their form clearly of what it was previously but today, it is admired for its real beauty.”
— PPBongi, “DNA Says Love You”
Feel Good
“It’s not a preachy show attempting to inject woke values into the audience, but instead sharply dramatizes the evolution of our social perceptions and the greater freedom we are discovering by dumping old gender/sexual status quos. There’s casual fun in moments where George tries to get Elliot into kinky role-playing games or group sex, some inspired by Soviet-themed porn she’s discovered online. When Mae interviews with a new agent, the agent automatically assumes Mae must be trans but reassures them it’s perfect for a hip look, describing them as a “lonely millennial.”
— Aldo Rengifo, Entertainment Voice
Wandering Son
“When I first approached Wandering Son I was concerned that, like so many works that have lessons to impart, it would come off as didactic and proselytizing. Instead, we have this warm-hearted, gentle story about a collection of kids growing up. Wandering Son doesn't lay out any argument for the humanity of its characters who diverge from social expectation. It doesn't need to. Takako's book allows you to grow comfortable with these kids as you would members of your own family. You see them happy; you see them hurt. You see their dreams; you see their fears. You see them reaching for lives that make sense to them, struggling even as we all do to find comfort and value in the things that attract our affections—all while trying desperately not to have our spirits crushed along the way.”
— Seth T. Hahne, “Wandering Son”
Muteluv: Diva Deva Mata
“This one is for my t-girls; toey or trans, take your pick. I adore every one of these characters. The pretty bitches, the sweet pageant queens, the brilliant activists, and the girlies who couldn't get their life together or pass without divine intervention. I know all these babies. The fem-life is about wanting to be your own version of your fem-self without sacrificing your whole life to make it happen. So it is with these tgirls. They want love and beauty and fame and popularity, but they also can knock a motherfucker out with a good blow. With all the camp, it still manages to depict their desires, humanity, contradictions, and the fucked up friendships that unite them.”
— “My DIVAS”
QL Tag Game: Actors on Actors
Rules: Just a fun chill way to see people’s different tastes. Fill in your QL actors answers to as many (or as few) of the these superlatives as you like. Tag 5 friends to see theirs.
tagged by @moutheyes (here). thank you for tagging me 10,000 years ago! 💜😭 sorry it took me so long >_< (btw we're going to have some overlap lol.)
Your number 1 bias: I don't...actually have one 😶 First Kanaphan has done really well in a number of roles and I'm likely to give any series he's in a watch. that's probably the closest thing I have to a #1 bias lol.
Fav supporting actor: right now, it might be Fluke Nattanon. I feel unreasonably happy when I see him on screen these days lol.
Delivers in everything you’ve seen them in: tis Junior Panachai. man has range and I can't with him these days. he's an actor who can make me laugh and cry. (always a plus in my book.) also, I feel like there's this depth to his characters that I'm consistently seeing, and it feels like it's something he's probably intentionally doing as an actor (versus being given/directed to do).
Surprised you with a performance: Pond Naravit as Thee. (I told you there'd be overlap! but the thing is) I was so surprised at his performance in Me and Thee! like, I've felt kind of lukewarm about Pond's acting but Me and Thee didn't just highlight his strengths. I feel like that was also the most immersed and committed to a role I've ever seen him.
Has yet to meet their potential: this might be Perth Tanapon for me. I've seen him do some really great scenes and I've enjoyed his acting in multiple series. but, personally, I feel like I haven't seen him deliver this like sustained emotional depth for a character. part of it could be that I haven't seen him in a role that he does this in (or gives him the opportunity, or maybe it's just my interpretation), but I do think part of it has to do with having that bit of room to grow as an actor. I just feel like I've never seen him immersed in a main lead role but he would/does have the capacity.
Needs a role to match their talents: oh, Mark Pakin. I am specifically talking about a main lead role btw. I've loved his performances as multiple support characters so much that it really bummed me out when I didn't enjoy Sweet Tooth, Good Dentist. but I feel like part of why I didn't enjoy him in that role could be due to the character he was casted as. like, no matter how good of an actor someone is, if the role isn't a good fit then it isn't a good fit. and I'm just waiting for the day when I can see him tear up the set with a main role he can sink his teeth into.
Like their acting but not so much the celebrity: um, I live under a rock so this is pretty N/A for me lmao.
Like the celebrity but not so much the acting: Prem Warut, my beloved. as much as I loved him as Team in Between Us (and his support role in My Only 12%) I have not been able to get through his other series 😭 I think Prem does have potential as an actor, but he's also an actor who needs more support + time to fully connect with a role imo. (this doesn't fall under the 'has yet to meet their potential' category for me though. for me, that category is for someone who is quite skilled as an actor and could be even better.)
Would be fun to see them in different partnerships: "all of them, really, but especially the CPs whose onscreen energy doesn't fully work for me." < echoing @moutheyes. my top picks would be MarkOhm and OffGun.
The partnership elevates them: SeaKeen. (I feel like the meaning of this category can be up to interpretation so to clarify, what I mean is) I think their partnership makes them better; I think they've helped each other grow as actors/performers and their influence on each other has helped them both in their development. so in this way, their partnership elevates them.
Overrated: (for the sake of trying to decrease overlap, I'll go with) OffGun.
Underrated: Java Bhobdhama. (again, I live under a rock so maybe he's not underrated and I just haven't seen the posts about him? but) I feel like I didn't see enough gifs of his heavier muteluv scenes or posts talking about them. delivering emotional depth in a shorter series takes work and I absolutely give him props.
Fav new face on the block: Keng Harit. um, I was not prepared lmao. I randomly decided to start watching Khemjira and suddenly had to deal with his acting chops wth lol.
Fav old gen or, as I like to call them, Q-Lder: Pompam Niti. I am always delighted to see him. someone pls give me a ql about older queers with him as the main lead. (imagine him in a wyeyd-esque show. he could give Kenji, okay?) but also, I might be misunderstanding the assignment with that answer? if this question about fav actor from older qls, then it's probably Tay Tawan or Singto Prachaya.
tagging: no one. I am SO LATE lmao. but if you see this and want to play, consider yourself tagged! 💜 (and pls tag me in your post so I can see it)
anyone else watching love beyond dreams or is it just me and 3 other gay people on tumblr
Interesting interview (in Thai, sorry) with Kru Den from Domundi with a lot of insights into the real-life concerns and experiences woven into Khemjira and Love Upon a Time.
FANTASTIC INTERVIEW! with the director of Khemjira and Love Upon a Time and one of the writers for Only Friends and War of Y.
Talks in detail about drawing lots of scenes directly from his own queer experiences or those of others he witnessed.
He also wants to expand on and address a lot of the concerns I’ve heard on this website—where are the dark-skinned leads, why do they need to be thin, why can’t a seme be feminine?
Get into it!
Well… about last night…
LOVE BEYOND DREAMS (2026) | EP 4
+ BONUS 👋
got my girl rules seoul fanmeeting ticket! i didn't splurge on a nice seat this time but i am just happy to see them with my own eyes, plus there is still a photo benefit :')
if you're not watching Love Beyond Dreams, what are you waiting for?
seriously, this series has not been talked about enough and that's such a shame because it's absolutely phenomenal! it has been one of those series i've been completely mesmerized with since the pilot and it has not disappointed - in fact, it has exceeded all my expectations 🥹
as a first gl from Me Mind Y, it has everything:
a well-written and engaging script that keeps you on your toes while weaving through beloved tropes (such as best friends to strangers to lovers, time reversal, threads of fate, the grumpy one & the sunshine one, etc.)
complex and interesting lead characters that can make you cry just as easily as they can have you giggling and kicking your feet
immaculate chemistry between the lead actresses (Mie Phattaranan and Aya Orapan) - genuinely, they're such a great pair and these characters fit them so well
great acting from the whole cast; i honestly cannot think of a single "weak" link in the cast - everyone is doing an amazing job and the acting has been stellar (from the comic relief side characters to the main cp, everyone's performance has been absolutely brilliant)
a gorgeous ost (aya's an extremely talented singer and her song has been on repeat on my playlist ever since they released it)
much like Heart Code, the series only has 7 episodes AND THAT'S ABSOLUTELY DEVASTATING 😭 we're already five eps in, so if you're gonna catch up, now is probably the best time, but strap in (no pun intended), it's gonna be a ride.
Synopsis: Twenty-one-year-old fresh graduate Aran had always believed her relationship with Lene, who is two years older, was more than just a sibling-like bond, until she received the cruelest rejection she could ever have imagined. In the end, she can only embrace her pain and fly abroad to continue her studies, hoping that one day she will be able to forget Lene. Then one day, a mysterious package arrives along with a handwritten letter. There is no name, but Aran recognizes the handwriting instantly. She decides to fly back to Thailand, determined to finally close this unresolved chapter. The moment she arrives, however, she is met with devastating news: Lene is dead. Ran can only carry her shattered heart to Lene's funeral, where she is forced to confront a truth that breaks her completely. Just as she's about to say her final goodbye, she overhears a conversation suggesting that Lene's death may have been caused by someone close to her. When she wakes up five years in the past, to the moments after her rejection, red thread from the funeral still in hand, she tells herself this time will be different. This time, she will be the one to protect Lene.
i tried to keep this post as short as i could so i've actually left out so many more great things i could say about it, but if you're looking for a recommendation on your next thai gl, i wholeheartedly propose you give this one a chance.
oh and, there's also a clown car that i've been driving around 'cause we have theories so feel free to jump in (there's always more room!) 🙃
The Rasa Pair Tag Game
This game was thought up by @siathawisit but it made me so excited I had to kick it off asap!!
Rules: The rasas are South Asian aesthetic categories that remain influential in the regions dramas and art (read more on the wikipedia article here). Literally, it’s the dominant “flavor” of a work or performance. For the game, pick a pair that represents each rasa to you. You can choose whether you want to do CP pairings or just characters. No need to explain unless you feel like it. Then tag 5 friends to find out their flavors of love.
Sringara (शृङ्गारः): Romance, Love, Beauty, Eroticism
The prettiest couple hitting every romantic melodrama note perfectly. Pearlpeak have those yaoi proportions to sell them to the BL crowd but the kind of breathless performances to make the sappiest most familiar plot-lines feel revelatory and astoundingly sensual.
Hasya (हास्यं): Laughter, Mirth, Comedy
Gone but not forgotten. Whether in 2gether or Tonhon Chonlatee, they were always wonderful and welcome goobers #mygoobers
Raudram (रौद्रं): Fury, Anger
Whether Daou is tearing a new one for rude and invasive people on the Internet or Offroad is giving him that piercing glance from the side of the stage when he’s crossed a line, this pair knows exactly how to channel their anger, and they can make it so damn compelling on screen. They are a lesson in how anger can play a meaningful part in love—protectiveness, possessiveness, power play, and more. You’ll want someone to be angry with you after you spend time with DaouOffroad.
Karuṇā (करुणा): Compassion, Mercy, Spiritual Longing, Sorrow
No pair has managed to convey such desperate soul-searching in multiple roles, and even their CP brand is laced with a kind of pessimism unlike any other pairing (40 fans and a divorce era). They just hurt so good.
Bībhatsa (बीभत्सं): Disgust, Aversion, Repulsion
I wanted to pick a CP from the early days of sex comedy BLs like Make It Right, but I don’t know much about the koojin brand outside of the shows and they were all lacking in gifs (but NiceAof, know that I thought about Lukmo falling for the smell of Yok’s bowel movements in MIR!). SurfJava on screen and off are giving the old boyish shenanigans, though. Their love-language seems like fart jokes and Tom and Jerry cartoon violence. They’d call each other slurs as an insult and a term of endearment.
Bhayanaka (भयानकं): Horror, Terror, Overwhelm
Really this award should just go to Bible on his own. His partners just have to deal with the malevolent aura his persona comes with (although he seems like a perfectly nice guy!). I just don't think it's a Bible series until he has blood on his face tbh. Luckily, Jes has been more than game for embracing the avant-dark side. His costumes the past two halloweens were beetlejuice and the joker. Meanwhile, Bible just did a live while sharpening his personal knife collection. I rest my case.
Vīram (वीरं): Heroism, Energy, Adventure
MaxTul are forerunners, game-changers, bold, brash, advocates, the list goes on, and fit enough to do their own stunts if they wanted. Even their proposals have an little extra dose of adventure.
Adbhutam (अद्भुतं): Awe, Wonder, Amazement
DMD in general likes to brand on a pretty seme who stays in constant awe of a beautiful uke—no complaints! But Keng and Namping take the other-worldly wonder to another level. They both have an aura of perfect composure, and the slow-mo and multiple lives (all the way back to time immemorial) storyline throughout khemjira certainly built on how majestic can appear. Watching them, you feel like you’re watching two heavenly creatures wrap their wings around each other.
Santam (शान्तरस): Peace, Tranquility, Calm
Perhaps it's being in the cast of chaos around them that BeverTonliew seem especially pacific in comparison. Still, their characters and their fanservice have a steady and steadfast quality to them, quiet but adoring. We all adore the friction-filled sparks and drama of Elizabeth Bennett and Darcy, but what about the subtle longings of Anne Elliott and Wentworth or Fanny Price and Edmund? It takes special kinds of actors to bring the tranquil love of shy and virtuous romantic leads to life as compellingly as Bever and Tonliew did.
No pressure tags: @befuddledcinnamonroll @williamrikers @ginnymoonbeam @doublel27 @paulinamakes and @siathawisit
Here’s the list in an easy copy-paste format: 1. Sringara (शृङ्गारः): Romance, Love, Beauty, Eroticism 2. Hasya (हास्यं): Laughter, Mirth, Comedy 3. Raudram (रौद्रं): Fury, Anger 4. Karuṇā (करुणा): Compassion, Mercy, Spiritual Longing, Sorrow 5. Bībhatsa (बीभत्सं): Disgust, Aversion, Repulsion 6. Bhayanaka (भयानकं): Horror, Terror, Overwhelm 7. Vīram (वीरं): Heroism, Energy, Adventure 8. Adbhutam (अद्भुतं): Awe, Wonder, Amazement 9. Santam (शान्तरस): Peace, Tranquility, Calm
Hehe my influence.
This is just meant as an exercise in thinking with different aesthetic categories. If anyone wants an overview of how the theory actually works in Sanskrit poetics/dramaturgy, here's a good overview:
I think this is a useful paradigm to keep in mind while watching more lakorn-styled Thai series. The actual transmission of these ideas is a little complicated and I won't bore you with that, but this is ultimately the sort of thing that all that melodrama is aimed at -- not a false representation of reality but an emotional experience more intense than the muddle of daily life.
A nice demonstration by a Kathak performer where you can feel the resonances with the soap operatic style.
A DOG AND A PLANE | EP 1
