im getting sick of this.

I got a ghibli origami book for my birthday and I've been making my way through it gradually

It's been slowed a bit because I've been having to stop to parse unclear/incorrect illustrations. And slowed a bit more because I'm bothering to stick post-its over them with corrections.

It's as though nobody actually checked if the instructions worked

#like i don't want to go straight to 'did they use AI to do this?' without any real evidence of it #other than it seeming like the sort of oversights an AI not being supervised by someone who understands the shit would make #the annotations are kind of necessary. the instructions don't work unless the pictures show you what you're supposed to do.#the folds need to be in the right places #like it isnt nitpicking to say the drawing under the post it objectively put the fold in the wrong place #wife and i got stuck on the very first pattern in the book because one of the steps drawings was unhelpfully ambiguous #found another that was like 'your piece should now look like this' but the colors indicating front/back were also objectively incorrect #so now i get double the activity from this book i guess. doing the origami AND editing the book the way the publishers probably should have

Maybe getting really autistic about a specific character would help

I think I figured out why animatronic scooter doesn't close his mouth the whole way

They put tracking dots on his lower jaw, but not his upper jaw. If you watch footage of puppet scooter, you see the top mouth plate moving around like crazy. I bet the upper jaw flexes down more than they anticipated and not putting tracking dots on the upper jaw didn't give them that data.

Like in good puppeteering you are only "supposed" to move the lower jaw, but that isn't exactly how it works out in practice. I've seen footage of henson himself describing how muppet lipsync is sort of like throwing the words out of the character's mouth. The whole hand sort of goes forward, the thumb drops and the fingers move up.

And animatronic scooter doesn't do that.

#this isn't like 'they did it wrong'#but more like. im wondering how or if anybody in the process of doing this knew about these things.#it's not that big a deal #but also like #seems like kind of an odd place for an oversight #scooter's mouth plate is more flexible than is immediately apparent #i don't really think it needs to be fixed. i think this was more me figuring out what i was noticing was off and why it might be like that.#why would you add tracking markers to the top mouth plate that part is supposed to stay still #but then. they gave him legs and also put tracking markers on the legs. so who knows

It's taken me a second listen of the night watch audiobook to realize the antagonist is named Carcer. I was certain the entire first time through they had been calling him Carter. Which is decidedly less lethal or threatening sounding.

#that clears that up #thats like. 'the evil diabolical Tucker.' that's just some guy #i don't know if it was the audio quality or the accent or the fact that I've never heard 'carcer' said by anyone ever

I don't think I want one. But that seems like something that should be out in the world.

#it seems like a combination of enjoying things that look like other things #but also i miss when you could close a phone #also something about covering a glass touchscreen when not in use seems like a default design consideration #it would be like a smartwatch only with a big enough screen that it having a touch screen isnt stupid #how do you design an interface when your fingertip obscures a quarter of the entire screen #when i think about how nice in the hand a palm sized flattened sphere would feel to hold i get angry #fuck these slabs man

As cool as it is to see how well it's been achieved, some part of me is unable to ignore the precedent of replacing a puppeteer with a robot

#and the implications that brings #i am still very curious what the internals of the animatronic skeleton look like #i want to know what is moving the animatronic arm rod. is it just like one of those car building robot arms?#like obviously would be impractical to have a live puppeteer performing for a ride preshow all day every day #but the precedent has been set #i imagine you could put pretty much any puppet onto the robot puppeteer #and theyve already figured out how to map mocap data onto a robot

Well, that answers the "how do you motion capture a muppet" question pretty handily.

Why did they put tracking markers on his legs

#the tracking dot array on the arm rod clears a lot up for me #there only being tracking dots on the lower jaw might explain why the animatronic doesn't close its mouth all the way #maybe #this seems kind of silly that they made a little costume and skull cap for scooter but i guess i'm not sure how else you'd do it #I wonder if putting tracking dots on a puppet is more or less convenient than using the henson digital puppet contraption #that arm rod is very long #arm rod length can be but is not necessarily proportionate to arm length #shit gets tangly

it's kind of goofy that I got into discworld on accident because I had the odd mood one day to check out a bunch of text-based/point-and-click-adventure games. Your kings quests and monkey islands and similar.

I think at the time I had heard that Eric idle voiced the main character of this game and I trusted that they probably let him be funny. Then it turns out oh this game is based on a book series actually this entire time.

His rincewind performance is basically flawless he's a really good fit for the character.

That was fucking weird I've never had a dentist do a cavity without numbing beforehand
