been seeing a lot of variations on this take recently - itâs one of the most common pro-immigrant sentiments and also one of the worst - the line that says we should welcome migrant workers because working class Australian/British/US etc citizens are too spoilt or lazy or consider themselves too good to do those jobs.
Like it comes from a (sort of) well meaning place, theyâre often trying to say that migrants arenât criminals or lazy or whatever⊠but aside from valuing people according to their productive âworthâ, valourising menial, difficult work as some kind of moral virtue and attacking working class people for not being exploited enough, the most important thing missing from that take is the reasons why working class citizens donât do these jobs.Â
Itâs not because working class Australians/Americans/Brits etc are too good for it - itâs that employers deliberately donât employ people that they might actually have to pay properly - wage theft is fundamental to the business model
But somehow it always gets framed in terms of working class peopleâs choices - what the migrant is âwilling to doâ and what the American wonât. Poor migrants canât choose more attractive work, and the working class citizens canât âchooseâ to work for less than minimum wage. Itâs the bosses who make the choice, itâs about what they are âwilling to doâ. This is how they want it.Â

Police in North Carolina arrested at least five suspects after store managers asked cops to âstand downâ when people affected by Hurricane Florence broke in and took items from a local Family Dollar outlet.
On Saturday, after the Category 1 hurricane had devastated the city, local television stations began receiving reports of looting at a Family Dollar that sits directly across from Houston Moore Terrace, one of the largest of Wilmingtonâs 8 public housing complexes, but the news outlets noticed that there were no law enforcement officers around.
That was because, when cops initially arrived on the scene, the businessâ owners told cops that he or she didnât want to press charges against the people who were taking items from the store. WECT reports that officers âwere told by management of the Family Dollar to stand down after receiving reports of looting at the store,â so they did not arrest anyone.
The police department tweeted: âWe are aware of the looting occurring at the Family Dollar Store at 13th & Greenfield Sts, unfortunately management has asked not to intervene at this time.â
But instead of clearing roadways or providing assistance to people affected by the hurricane, flooding or power outages, the cops managed to convince the discount storeâs owners to press charges after officers âconsulted with the district attorney.â When the proprietor relented, the law enforcement officers immediately began the hard work of tracking down the brazen criminal masterminds who made off with the storeâs valuable stash of one-ply toilet tissue and off-brand pine-scented cleanser.
First, the brave heroes leaped into action by placing a curfew on the area around the Family Dollar store. Then they began reviewing news footage of the looting, asking the public for help. As the entire city waited with bated breath, wondering how they could sleep knowing that there were people roaming the streets with cases of free, barely-carbonated cases of cheap cookout soda, the valiant first responders finally apprehended the culprits, promising to punish them to the fullest extent of the law.
Absolutely every item in that store is going to have to be tossed from inventory after this storm subsides. The police would have these items go in the garbage rather than have them help the people within the community being devastated by a hurricane. Fucking ridiculous
