his reflection has been staring back at him for the last half hour - he almost can’t recognize himself in such a pristine suit, with silver studs accenting the collars of the blazer. jeonghan thinks that maybe he should have gotten a haircut, but blame all this newfound anxiety to the former source of erratic heartbeats, sweaty palms and stuttering words. jeonghan welcomes the unusual and somewhat agonizing feelings back into the system, but reminds himself not to get used to it. he doesn’t want to live the rest of his life questioning what ifs and what could have beens.

the time has come, right here, right now.

with a sharp intake of breath, he turns away from the mirror, and steps out into the common room where his date wait. just the thought: date - it sends him almost keeling over, a flow of unresolved and unknown emotions hitting him fast. he didn’t care to know who was taking who, except his mind constantly lingers on the fact that he, of all people, is taking kristopher wu.

“bonsoir, mon cher,” he begins, his voice coming out softer than he expected. he feels his heartbeat in his throat, unable to suppress the wide smile that forms against pale lips. “you look… absolutely…” the right word, think of the right word. “…perfect. are you ready to go?”

he appears, an apparition, an angel all in white, and kris can feel his heart rise to his throat. there have been so many times before this that kris has swallowed down the innermost thoughts of calling jeonghan beautiful, of falling deep into the swirling darkness of his eyes and yielding to his perfection, for the sake of his heartache and his sanity. but anguish aside he lays his eyes upon jeonghan, a vision is his suit and tie, and his mind whirls with every positive adjective he knows in every language he can think them in. he swallows. his throat has thickened.

“bonsoir,” he retorts in the same tongue, though his is deeper, clumsier; he butchers the language in comparison to jeonghan’s honey-dipped words and it makes him cringe to hear himself. he’s pushed up from the sofa, now standing up straight to meet his date. he’s headily aware of his fingers winding around the hem of his suit jacket, an action he stops immediately.

stepping forward with an air of bravery he didn’t know he had, kris fishes into his pocket and clumsily withdraws a small, single red rose bud from within. white teeth nibble at his bottom lip as he takes a step closer, a second, a third, until they’re barely an arm’s length away. “oui, i am ready,” he begins, idly twiddling the rose before he lifts it, deftly tucking it into jeonghan’s top button. he smiles, lifts his eyes to meet jeonghan’s for the first time. he wishes he hadn’t. those eyes have always been a weakness. “you look amazing yourself.”

“why are you awake at this hour?” he decided to ask, a tad hypocritical of a question considering he too had welcomed (not really) his stream of consciousness around an hour ago. when tossing and turning seemed futile, he decided to head out to the common room, seeing as the lights were still on. this could be a sign for a good day ahead, or a reminder that he was well out of luck. “have you not been sleeping well?” 

“a favourite quote? oh... yes, i think so, hang on...”

kris dogeared his corner of his page with eager fingers so that he could flick through the others without the risk of losing his place. dark eyes teased the words on the page, flitting over them for barely a second as he grazed for his keywords, flipping backwards a couple of pages at a time. he stopped, eventually, and traced the sentence with soft fingertips. clearing his throat with a small, gruff cough, kris licked his lips and spoke quietly.

“the only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it,” his voice was deep and quiet, ringing within the room not much louder than the tick of the grandfather clock in the corner, “resist it, and your soul grows sick with longing for the things it has forbidden to itself, with desire for what its monstrous laws have made monstrous and unlawful. it has been said that the great events of the world take place in the brain... it is in the brain, and the brain only, that the great sins of the world take place also.”

kris let the book on his lap go limp in his hands and he drew in a breath, drinking in the serendipity of the language, drawing energy from the beautiful slew of words that fell from his lips. his smile touched the corners of his eyes as he looked at jeonghan and quietly placed the book on the arm of his couch, preoccupied enough now with his friend ( the word is acid on his tongue but he’s not sure what else he can call him anymore ) that the book was no longer needed.

he laughed, short and bitter somewhat. “i never sleep very well, i thought you knew that.” are you forgetting all about me, jeonghan? “i usually just pass out down here whenever exhaustion takes a hold of me. what about you?”

the night sky illuminated with starlight is said to have been inspiration for the best of minds, and kris finds himself falling into the clutches of its spell far too often. when sleep just won’t come and phobetor claws at the backs of his eyes he seeks solace in nyx herself, choosing to blanket himself in her darkness and find safety between the cusps of her stars.

sneaking out has become easier as the years have gone by, or those who patrol the grounds at night have simply stopped caring about the idle and lost sheep like himself. winter cloak drawn close around his throat he steps out into the brisk midnight air of the courtyard and draws in a deep lungful of frigid air. his breath escapes his lips in a light plume of smoke and disappears into the darkness.

a twig snaps and his head whips around instinctively.

cautiously, and with hesitance interlaced into every pull of his muscles, he slips his fingers into his pocket to wrap around his wand. he takes a step back until he’s grazing the castle walls and holds a breath as it draws closer; if it’s a teacher, he can’t risk being seen outside after curfew. his legs are tense, ready to book it if needs be.

“you’re drunk, kris!”

kris only nods, because there’s no point in denying it when he’s swaying on the spot and grinning like a ruddy-cheeked fool. besides, he’s rationalized with himself a few drinks ago ( or the drunk version of him has ) that being drunk is, in fact, not a bad thing. mindless and bad for you, of course, but overall fun if done in small quantities. so it was nothing to be ashamed of admitting and he refuses to be ashamed to admit it, instead simply shrugging his broad shoulders and letting out a small, tipsy laugh.

“guess so. it’s a party after all! ah, ‘m out of beer though, lemme get some more.”

if sober kris could only hear himself now and the slur to his vocabulary, he would cringe and die on the spot.

kris pushes past a gaggle of people and ducks into the next room, dark eyes scanning around for any signs of the drinks table ( he had found it a little while ago, but forgot where he put it yet again. that kept happening. he wasn’t sure why ). he accidentally bumps into a girl with his arm and takes a slightly staggered step backwards, blinking down at her.

“sorr-- oh! hey!” he chirrups as he points, because suddenly her face becomes incredibly familiar to him despite his drunken haze. “hey, you’re that girl on the quidditch team, right? i know you. hey.”
