hi i love ur william analyses and how you draw the connections between UPP william to PD william..,, super duper excited to see ur thoughts on the new episode…,,
Wags my tail Yay yay!!!!
I have so many thoughts man… to me this episode kind of feels like the pinnacle of the upp William to pd William timeline. Where William’s opinion of himself (“of course that wouldn’t work, stupid stupid”) and how he thinks about the people around him (with Lui constantly telling everyone to be “ten times more careful” and William doing the opposite of that and. Look how that ended) …. And I was already sooo fandom brained fixated on the grimoire they found (with how it connects to Ashe and to Williams “final” death) but now it’s sooooo much worse. Will forever be mildly sad about the fact that upp only happened post pd2 because can you imagineeeee what William would have been like in pd1 when Ashe pulled that grimoire out with the additional context we all have now . I’ll still make up a reason why he reacted the original way he did but I’ll always be left hashtag wondering now…
More thoughts I had after upp 2.4
I made a post before about how different William is with upp and pd as groups and how as a superhero William is focused on being a better friend and. Man. Ever since the grimoire was introduced all I can think about is how his friendship with Ashe must have been impacted by his past. Weird kid with a fixation on occult who’s always the one to reign everyone in and so often dragged into the bits rather than starting them? Weird kid with a creepy book that ends up basically killing her?? Weird kid who’s friendly and timid and is often the most level headed of the group??? There’s no way in hell that in Overlords super secret base, all of pd injured and screwed, watching Ashe get consumed by the Trickster, William didn’t think of Lui. Lui, his childhood best fucking friend who he had a special pinky winky promise with that they’ve done since they were little kids.
Thinking about this with the additional info from twt about William blocking out the wisp form in pd2 due to being afraid of experiencing the same thing that happened to Ashe too. And then pd2 finale Williams looking through a grimoire he can only kind of understand that’s their only way of surviving. In Deadwood.
Obnoxious William Wisp fan who’s doing so . Good. So good after this episode.
So insane how this is like. Maybe genuinely the first time we’ve ever seen William angry. PD included. The closest William ever got to “angry” (to THIS extent) was grayscale finale, and even then it was more complicated and far more sad than pissed off. Insane how the only way William will ever get mad is through unnatural means. Only in a bout of madness have we ever seen Will mad. I’m going to chew on this for forever
And I’m stillll into youuuu
Nemesis 4 (after) life!!!
something about horrible nightmares having faces in them you’d really like to see again
Miserable idea: William goes back into the closet after dying. Based on the joke where Dakota says it’s fine if William likes guys and the major difference in how Will dresses in UPP and PD. 15 year old William who has friends he trusts wholeheartedly, who’s prepping to come out to his parents, who knows Deadwood is a horrifying place, but knows that despite that there is a life here worth living . Then 18 year old William who is literally rotting, homeless, barely in contact with his family. Yes he has friends, yes there is something here worth staying for, but with every mistake he makes the more he believes he’s dragging everyone else down . Why would he ever come out if he’s sure that he’s going to lose this too . Why would William “This was Bound to Happen” Wisp ever prep to open up about anything anymore really
Guy who doesn’t shut up about William Wisp: hey isn’t it crazy how big of a difference PD Williams guilt and morality complexes makes to the character. Like UPP William clearly isn’t griping with “I’m an inherently evil person and I have to do absolutely everything i can so that the people I love never find out” like PD William is. Looking over UPP with the context that William will die someday soon and that he’ll have to leave everyone behind for their own safety (thinking about what the wisps could have attracted is terrifying by the way . motions to all of upp it can get Worse Than This) makes all of William’s “this was bound to happen” about Dakota and “do you trust me” to Vyncent feel kind of like he’s seeing less of his best friends with insane strength and reflexes and training and weapons, and instead the regular average kids from Deadwood. Norah, who he pushed too far constantly, Lui, whose worries he disregarded for the sake of the mystery, Isaac, who constantly got put first in line for the life threatening danger. All of them lost family, their health, sanity. And by all means, after all they went through together, William just… left. UPP William doesn’t have the guilt that comes from “abandoning” his friends in hopes of saving them, he doesn’t have the motivation to examine and overthink the effect he has on his loved ones (PD William Still does this btw, by lying to Dakota, Tide and putting practically zero energy into keeping contact with his family).
UPP William doesn’t yet have a reason to hate himself, to view himself as the thing keeping everyone else from becoming better, dragging them down. (in a tone fitting a guy who is normal about William Wisp) Isn’t that sooo cool and awesome
Saw your upp deltarune post, I haven't played it, but I've seen other stuff abt it. Anyway, will as kris, norah as noelle, isaac as susie, and lui as ralsei. Thoughts?
YES!!!!! The weakest link is Lui with Ralsei but even then it fits really well…. like in the recent episode how Lui doesn’t want anyone else in upp looking into the grimoire like Ralsei hiding the truth of the prophecy…. Dies dies dies deltarune in FIVEEEE TOMORROWS!!!
Relistened to Grayscale . Had to exorcise the demons !
Today I’m thinking about the concept of William not telling his parents he died. They only ever refer to it as “the accident”, His parents never acknowledge he Died, William never even implies it when they’re around... When his parents come to take him back home after the Planetary Threat in PD s1, they might not even know they’re endangering themselves and the entirety of Deadwood, in the same way they never knew how often William risked his life when he was still a normal kid . William has to beg his dad not to take him home, to give PD a chance, to hear them out, to Not Take Him Back . Throws up
dreaming about a giant woman………..
UPP2.3 brainworms:
There’s this UPP-exclusive William wisp mini character arc happening since UPP1 (that has really fun ties to PD) and I’ve only now sat down to think about it.
The best Base UPP William example of this is when Norah and William are at Mr Lacey’s house. William shows just how cowardly But curious he is, he doesn’t Want to Leave and he doesn’t want to go in Alone. When William and Norah are at the entrance, he makes sure she goes in first, that he’s closest to the door, that he’s in the Least amount of danger in comparison to Norah + how he basically drags her through the woods chasing a bunch of Bugs, getting both of them lost and incidentally forcing Norah to confront her parents much later than she wanted to. Another moment of this is in UPP1.2, where Norah’s incapacitated and William is thinking about going to the church without even thinking up of a plan on how he or Isaac would get out of there if the stryga Was in there. There’s this thoughtless recklessness to what he’s doing, causing unnecessary hurt to him but especially his friends and risking their safety.
Comparing That to how he is in UPP2 . Is a massive leap . Like in the newest episode, where he talks Lui out of doing a brash and reckless plan, comes up with how both They can signal to Norah that they’re out And how to figure out if anyone inside Mr Abrahams house from a Safe Distance. In UPP2.2, he sneaks into Mr Abrahams basement without causing a scene, managing to not alert the Danger when he leaves And comes back, only trying to do something really insane (smashing the glass into Mr Abrahams head) once he realizes Lui’s in danger, and even THEN, he manages to de-escalate and get all three of them out. Same episode, neither Norah or Lui can go out of the trees to save Isaac because they’re worried about Abraham having their names, and while William hesitates and panics, he Still chooses not to risk their safety and shouts at Isaac’s dad on his own. In UPP2.1, he doesn’t snoop through Abrahams things when they visit his house either. Also also, In the recent episode, he even tells Isaac that he wouldn’t blame him if he left this investigation to the rest of them and sat it out.
It’s not that William’s become “more empathetic” (he’s always been very empathetic and caring), but he’s a lot more aware about the people around him and is Much more willing to both take lead and do things solo. Which is two Massive Traits he has in PD. When Will wants to know or learn something, he’s just Going to Do it whether anyone agrees with him or not. He sneaks into the OG base’s prison area to secretly talk to Mark, takes the lead in the spirit world to agree to Mal’s deal to save Tide, sneaks into Mark’s underground basement with Vyncent, in S2 he often goes against Vynce and Dakota to do what He thinks is best and smartest, both in small ways (S2E3 (the cartoon episode) and big ways (Grayscale arc). It’s just so so fun to see how he’s getting more and more familiar as a character, even if only as PD season 1 William :)
Another thing I’m noticing, in UPP in general, is how little William is keyed onto by the monsters and dangers of Deadwood. He has to yell and physically draw attention to himself for them to even Notice him. This paired with what he says to Mal in like, their FIRST meeting of “I’m used to people looking through me” is sooo interesting to me.
He’s the only one of the UPP to have never gotten properly isolated from the group, not while being in immediate danger. Back in UPP1.3 he was alone in the church for a bit, yes, but it was the One Time the Priest Wasn’t There to Hunt, because it was too preoccupied with Isaac. The closest we currently have to William being faced with something like this comparatively (Isaac and the Priest in UPP1 / Norah with Doctor Guerrero, her bout of madness / Norah with her dad in the forest / Isaac with his dad and Mr Abraham / Lui and Mr Abraham) is him and Lui’s grandma, but seeing as they know how to banish her and have all the tools necessary, it’s a lot less horrifying or dangerous compared to the rest of his friends.
This AND the fact Williams family is the only one that Canonically manage to Survive this. Norah has a major chance of loosing her dad, Isaac’s already lost HALF of his family, and Lui’s lost his grandma to the stryga. Like horrible things Definitely happen to the Wisp family, like Will’s mom getting sick with the Bug Disease in UPP1, but she survives it!!! Despite how shit Williams luck is he’s never suffered a bout of madness, and in the season where everyone’s family’s are in constant life threatening danger, the fact that the Wisps (for now at least LOL) are completely physically fine feels almost kind of odd.
Maybe this is Chronic Wisperer Brained Guy Syndrome, but it’s something that really stuck out to me,,,,
UPP2.3 thoughts . Jesus Christ
This is one of those episode where the entire time I really can’t stop thinking about how young upp are. Norah alone in the woods, unable to even open her eyes unless she risks seeing things that might not even be there, but still leave her injured and mortified, begging for her dad to come help her. Isaac crumbling to the floor in Bella’s room and sobbing as he realizes he’s lost not only his dad but his little sister too, that he forgot both of them, that he will never be able to talk to her ever again. Lui trying to get his friends to take what’s happening seriously after having read a grimoire so fucked up and dark it nearly left his sanity slipping, calling home, being stuck between feeling comforted and horrified that his ‘grandma’, who kissed his forehead literally yesterday, is asleep and not gunning to kill his friend. William making jokes, trying to get laughs out of everybody, just to try and make it all feel so much less heavy, his excuse for using a neighbors phone essentially being “I need to call my mom”. Genuinely miserable . And every adult around them is failing them not because they aren’t concerned — everyone is worried. Isaac’s mom is worried, Norah’s dad is worried, William’s mother is worried. Only Lui’s mom isn’t concerned as much, but she still makes it a point to ask when he’s coming home. But none of them can do anything because the truth is so incomprehensible and insane, and the danger is so horrific and serious, that there is no world where their kids ever EVER open up to them. Dies for like . Forever
She’ll figure it out someday just give it like . Three years and four deaths !
