Disunity (Part 8)

Vidra told them to “get ready to run.” Solaan needed no more encouragement. He darted forward, charging straight toward the prison doors. There was no thought - or, at least, no conscious thought - only throbbing and overwhelming fear.
He kept expecting something to hit him. Some weapon, some projectile, some… something… to knock him to the ground or even kill him. He could see close calls flashing before his eyes.
And it was only halfway through his charging that he realized he had no idea where he was running to. Where did he need to go? Where was Proxy at? Vidra was around, right? Even if she were right beside him, in this chaos, he could not tell.
He did not have time to reason, think, or search around for his companions. He was out in the open. He was in danger. And though he was armed, he was very outnumbered.
The best he could think of doing was just… keep… running…
The traps were still on, so it was unlikely the enemy would give chase through that passageway. Which meant the priority was getting out of the passage and to safety.
Vidra checked the scan again, noting that there seemed to be a clear path towards the prison doors but off to their right. Of course, if there was anything surviving behind them, they’d know and follow. Or they’d be led into a trap.
At this point…
Retreat, regroup, recover. They know we’re here. So let’s get to the heart of this.
Hey, could be another underground group out of the way…
The arrows still coming at them from all directions, Vidra struggled to find the mental focus.
She took another couple shots at the enemy source for good measure, then holstered her shotgun and threw her hands back up for a biotic barrier.
“It won’t hold for long!” she shouted, checking in to make sure both teammates were still with her. “Keep running! Passage on the right by the doors, then follow your map! Don’t run out of the barrier!”
Mira looked away trying her hardest to focus on the alien’s thoughts, that were continuing to fade away. The alien was clearly dead, so if there was anything she could grab, now was her only chance.
“Come on, buddy…” she whispered. “You got to have something.” The thoughts were jumbled together and faded along with his life. His body was beginning to go cold. “Anything to help us…” Finally…she gasped.
Kroot was stuck in a rather awkward position as he kept hoping that the next corner he turned would reveal an exit. He was fairly certain that he had taken the same path at least 5 times and had taken at least 8 different ones, yet none of them had led to anything except more cells. He couldn't even find a window or something to notify a wall he could try and break. He quickly ducked into a room after turning a corner and waited until they had all run past him. He turned to look into the room and found himself in front of a monitoring system which was, quite frankly, ridiculous. He could see on the screen the locations of a few of prisoners on the floor he was on. He decided at that moment that he was going to see if he could save them and made a small basket on his back to carry them in. He checked the corridor outside the room he had been in and, after deciding that it was safe to leave, started making a move for the cells where the prisoners were.

Solaan was always excited to run into some friends on the Hub, even though it was likely that he would do so on any given day. Still, the second Solaan crashed into Josh and Kroot, he was beaming.
“Hey! Hey! Josha! Kloot! I was just looking for you! I had an idea! Do you and like anyone else want to go off the Hub and check out one of the nearby planets? I hear there’s a world with a high population density that has some cool urban areas and stuff to do there! We could go get drinks or go to arcades or amusement parks or anything!”
Josh nodded, he could use a break from the day to day dangers of their lives. “Sure I’m game.”
“I am Kroot” the flora said to his friend. in reality, saying “Sounds like a good idea!” He was pretty bored and was getting slightly restless. It would also help as an experience for him to learn something about other cultures games and enjoyments.
“Stellar! Grandiose! Let’s do it then!” said Solaan. He started dancing toward the nearest hangar on the Hub. “I doubt the Collective wants us just randomly moseying to a planet for free time, but shouldn’t be too hard to hijack one of their smaller vessels, righty?”
Kroot thought on this for a moment “I am Kroot” he said, telling them that they shouldnt be suspicious if they say that theyre resupplying.
Josh chuckled and shrugged. “Well I wish you all the best of luck but I do have my own ship. Unfortunately it’s nowhere near big enough to fit all of us. However…” He got his communicator and called up Mira. “Hey Mira, a couple of us are going off base for some fun, you want in?”
Mira was in her apartment reading some research, when she suddenly heard Josh’s voice over her PCD asking if she wanted to have some fun off base, and a smile immediately splashed onto her face as she grabbed her device.
“Sure!” she began. “I could use some fun! Where are you guys?”
Josh looked over his shoulder at Kroot and Solaan and then turned back to his communicator. “Erm… Just meet me at my ship. Ok?”
Solaan was already moving to head toward Josh’s ship, not even waiting for Josh’s conversation with Mira to finish. At the same time, he had grabbed Kroot’s nearest arm, and was trying to pull the giant flora to walk along with him.
“This is going to be so great!” said Solaan. “I don’t know much about this planet, but it’s going to be a blast! Don’t you think so? What would you like to do? I mean we can do anything and I’d be happy to do anything so what would you want to do out of anything you could do?”
Hearing the slight hesitation in Josh’s voice made Mira slightly confused, but hearing Solaan in the background made her chuckle. “Sure,” she said. “I’ll meet you guys there as soon as I can.”
Josh nodded despite the fact that Mira couldn’t see him. He quickly caught up with the other two in the group, seeing that they were walking towards his ship. “Guys, you know we can’t all fit in there right?” He said, trying to dissuade them from trying to get in.
A voice came from behind the group. “Perhaps you’ll need to procure a second ship? Or a bigger one?”
Elyse stepped into the hallway, wearing a loose, sleeveless top; her normal pants, but un-tucked; and a pair of sturdy flats. She pushed back one of her hair segments and looked around. “It… shouldn’t be too difficult to hotwire a ship if necessary.”
Solaan jumped up in the air - a short jump for him, but one which probably got as much air as he was tall. He turned around, long spikes from his head swishing behind him, as he oriented himself to Elyse.
“Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah! Let’s go with the original plan! Take a ship. Hijack and hotwire and away we go!”
Josh chuckled and shook his head. “Alright, if that’s what you guys want to do feel free, but I’m gonna wait here for Mira and take my own ship. Feel free to go on without us.”
Kroot followed Solaan, Saying "i am Kroot" which translated to "lead on!" As they headed to a ship to leave the hub in.

Disunity part 7

Kroot had found his way into the prison and was walking around looking for the figures that they were after. “Would be good if i had someone with some technology to help me.” he thought to himself. Suddenly the alarm went off, surprising him, making him think he had been caught. He quickly smashed the nearest speaker to him, but that didn’t get rid of the sound, and the flashing red lights. He decided that he should probably start moving faster and started looking for his friends rather than the figures that they were after.
He wondered if he was already too late.
Proxy had completely zoned out of focus, and wasn’t quite paying any attention to Solaan and Vidra anymore. She just kept thinking, thinking, for a way to disappear, to wait until the threat had ended…
To perhaps create a false alarm maybe.
With that she said, “Vidra, remember how you said that we could set off various alarms as a distraction earlier on? Also remember me having into the base to get footage? Well, lil miss ass hole here thinks we could turn the situation around…” with that she started clicking away at her wristlet again, ignoring the pain from the arrow that awkwardly stuck out. She wondered if she could maybe shut down an alarm in a secluded area of the base, and make her way there to recon and reevaluate the situation.
“they haven’t found us yet have they…. ”
“They just… have…” Vidra grunted again, straining as she held the biotic barrier.
Red dots on her radar running in their direction, but she didn’t need that to hear the pounds of footsteps, complete with strangely… unintelligible shouting. Weird. Her translator was completely up to date…
“If you can disable alarms somewhere, we can deal with this situation and then regroup there,” she stated. “But hurry it up! Overload the weapon and trap triggers, I can deal with incoming enemies! I’m not a damn Sentinel!”
Headache increasing. Had to keep up the barrier.
Seven of the Rebirth rounded the corner. Misshapen, humanoid alien species, all multi-limbed, five legs, a hand sticking out of a head, extra fingers on knees, seven arms, four hands, messes of limbs and spears and -
Spears? Machetes? Carving knives? Oh look there was a regular rifle.
Shit… rifle aside, the rest are slow enough that my kinetic shields won’t stop them…
I’ll have to let Solaan and the kid get killed at this rate if I wanna get out of this.
“Aaaargh!” she snarled in frustration. “Hurry it up dammit!”
“God, they must’ve found out they were hacked, because they reinforced the goddamm system! If only I could get past that one barrier… Program codes, anti viruses, more codes, encryptions…” proxy muttered as she typed away as fast as she could. Finally, she got it.
“Got it! The area is a bit far from here however, but if we are careful enough they- oh.” she looked up and saw the incoming enemies. Five arms, rifles, machetes, even a specially induced omnizrowd? Well, that was something she hadn’t seen in a while.
Reading her own swords and guns, she sent Vidra and Solaan the coordinates of the quiet area via omni tool. Gritting her teeth and clenching her jaw, knowing that she won’t be able to shape-shift with the arrow in her shoulder. She’ll just have to do the the traditional way.
“traditional” was the right word…
“alright then, get ready because… We’re going to have to lose them.”
Suddenly Josh heard alarms going off and all but two people were left to guard the entrance. “Huh well that makes our jobs easier.” He whispered. “Alright so you go take out the one on the right, I’ll take out the one on the left. Think you can handle it Red?”
They had been sneaking around the prison for some time, and the silence was suddenly interrupted by alarms. She was going to ask Josh what was going on, but then he interrupted her asking to take out the guards at the entrance. She turned to them watching them. They didn’t seem phased by anything that was happening, which seemed to allow for the element of surprise.
“I can handle anything, Warlock…” Mira said as she eyed her target: the guard on the right. She ignored the alarms blaring above them and aimed her weapon. “Ready when you are.”
Kroot was now running away from a number of things in black robes. “Well, i guess that i’ve found them. Or rather, they’ve found me.” he thought to himself.
he found great difficulty in running away as they seemed to be faster than he was, attacking him as he defended himself using makeshift staffs from bars that he ripped off of a cell.
He began running down flights of stairs, really wishing that he was faster so that he could lose his pursuers, or something smaller so he could call in for some help.
“I am Kroot” He yelled in desperation.
Josh nodded at Mira putting a hand on the barrel on the side arm. “You might want to sneak closer Red. The side arm’s got a very short effective range. I’ll cover you from here.”
“Okay,” Mira whispered nodding at the human next to her. At that moment, she decided to put her abilities to good use; she phased through the wall she and Josh were up against to get closer to the guards–two multi-limbed creatures. Hopefully, she could take the one out before they could call for backup.
Within seconds, she appeared again in the middle of the hallway right in front of the two guards, and sure enough they noticed her. Before the one on the right–her target–could do anything else, she pulled the trigger and watched as he fell to the ground motionless.
As Mira disappeared through the wall Josh kept his scope trained on the other guard. He noticed something odd though. It looked like it had multiple arms and other appendages sticking out in various places on it’s body. “What the hell?” He muttered. The Guardian had little time to contemplate this though as Mira suddenly appeared again and shot the one dead. Josh quickly followed suit and fired hist rifle in what appeared to be the skull of the creature. He approached the things and kicked the one with a rifle shot in his head. “What the Hell are these things?” Josh whispered.
Mira bent down to get a closer look at the aliens she and Josh just took down. She eyed its skin, multiple limbs, and size, and it looked like nothing she had ever seen before.
“I have no idea,” she whispered. “I’ve never seen this species in my life.” Then she took out her PCD and lightly moved it over the fallen alien scanning it.
Josh sucked in a sudden breath as a realization came over him. “U-um, Red… R-remember how there were prisoner’s here, and how supposedly they were doing horrible, horrible things to them? Well…” He looked down at the creatures.
“What?” Mira asked looking up at him. “Spit it out.”
Josh swallowed and looked up at her then back down at the creatures. “It’s them.”
“I-I don’t understand,” she said simply. “A-Are these guys the prisoners or….?”
“Whoever these sickos are, they experimented on the prisoners and turned them into these… things.”
Kroot managed to wall off the rebirth for long enough that they lost sight of him. But now he was hopelessly lost with no way out and nobody but those things around. He was walking along a corridor that felt like it got longer the further he walked. He then rounded a corner only to be met with more corridor. "I AM KROOT" He yelled. Which, to anyone with a tanslator, would have sounded like "Where is everyone? Where am I? And how big is this place?" Only containing many more profanities.

Disunity (Part 6) - aka INFILTRATION TIIIIIME
[Part 1] [Part 2] [Part 3] [Part 4] [Part 5]
Solaan frowned at his PCD for a long, silent moment. At last, he whispered back into his communications channel, “Ummmm… I understood the word ‘Hero.’ Like, I understood the word ‘Hero’ is about me and all that, but that’s it. I have no idea what the rest of that ramble was supposed to be. Tango? Ten o’clock? It’s not ten o’clock in the day at all! Are you sure your words are being analyzed right with your translator? Because if you need a translator adjustment or mod, chances are first to check if the input software is outdated, and failing that, to do a reset where…”
Vidra realized her error immediately.
“Military slang,” she replied, whispering. “Terminology that I realize you probably don’t know. I’ll stick to layman’s terms for now and send you a glossary later.” And those chocolate gummy liqueurs. “Eight enemies about 55 meters away, 60 degrees to the left from where we’re standing. Uh… if we’re facing forward, 5pi/6 radians, radius 55 meters.” Sure, I can use radians.
“Radians and radius and degrees? Perfect. I can do that. I can do that all day, thank you very much. Alright, 55 meters away isn’t too far, going to go extra sneaky on them!”
Solaan continued to creep forward. His wide eyes scanned the forested cover, as if at any moment he might spot the enemies Vidra warned him about. He tried to do his best to circle around their location, though he realized that, if he panned any further away for safety, he would not be able to reach the entrance of the base. He would have to creep in closer to the enemies… and hope that they would not catch sight of him.
“Hey so… I don’t know if we can get past them to the doors without them finding out we’re here. I mean some of these guys seem like they’re right by the only entrances we know about,” he pointed out to Vidra.
And then he shrieked.
“What the shit - you weren’t supposed to blow our cover this soon - aw hell. Get down!”
Vidra pulled out her shotgun and readied the omniblade for action. She scanned the vicinity, checking the radar with her visor. No, only the enemies ahead. Whose attention they definitely had now. And the -
Her jaw dropped.
“The fuck kinda broodmother is that?!”
Solaan was being attacked. Suddenly, out of nowhere. The forest cover which he thought would give him cover… instead had given his enemies the upper hand.
It was hard to tell what was attacking him at first. He thought it was just one individual. But there were too many limbs - maybe two people, maybe three, all clambering at him. Whoever - whatever - these limbs belonged to, Solaan managed to wrench himself away. The momentum hurtled him backwards and he tumbled to the ground.
Terrified, hands shaking, Solaan fumbled for one of the pistols at his hip. He doubted he would have much chance in a fight without a firearm. He did not have enough time to grab before his attacker lurched toward him; Solaan instinctively planted his feet on the other’s chest and kicked with as much might as he could muster.
This finally provided Solaan some time. He was able to scramble to his feet, stand, and pull out a firearm. He was able to see the individual he had kicked.
The assailant appeared to be a human, just like many of the prisoners Solaan had seen in the Syndicate’s intel video. But this person was far too savage to be a human… far too determined to attack him… not to mention, they had more than two arms…
In the chaos of the moment, Solaan’s PCD had not been turned off. He heard Vidra’s exclamation, and shouted back, “I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THIS THING IS BUT IT’S NOT LOOKING GOOD! I THOUGHT YOU SAID THEY WERE FAR AWAY??? I GUESS NOT??? AT ANY RATE… HELP!!!”
The thing had been sudden and moved far faster than Vidra anticipated. It was humanoid and human-sized, but there was nothing of humanity in it.
She didn’t have time to think about it.
With an angry shout and surge of blue biotic energy streaming around her, she set her sights on it as it jumped about, locked on with focus, and charged.
Her body, surrounded by the sheer power of mass effect fields and biotic force, shot forward like a rocket of pure destructive energy, slamming into the thing. There was explosive sound, then the dull squelch of flesh blasting apart, ribs breaking, mashing into an unfortunate pulp. Bloody flesh chunks sprayed everywhere.
Just to be safe, Vidra rammed her omniblade through the remains of the thing’s skull.
She tapped her visor, locking into the communication signal.
“Ghost in. Stuff happened, we started ten minutes early. Tangos include multi-limbed organic humanoid… things. Don’t seem intelligent. Stick to plan, adjust if need be, be careful.”
Then she bounded up to Solaan, who hadn’t seemed to move during the entire encounter.
“We’re going in. Shoot straight. Keep your shields up.”
And with that, she ran straight for the entrance.
Before Josh and Mira began heading to the other corner of the prison he turned to his partner. “Let me see your weapon Red.”
The half-Tangean eyes Josh’s sniper and gave a nervous grin as she held up her small laser gun. “Will this do?” she asked.
Josh looked it over with a calculating glance. It was a simple but effective weapon, however due to it’s ammunition type it lacked a silencer, or even the ability to have one. He gave it back to her and said. “Normally I would say yes but this is a stealth mission and this thing doesn’t have a silencer.” He reached to his side and pulled out his sidearm, equipped with a silencer. “Here, take this. It should be fine.”
Mira stared at the new weapon Josh held out to her and then at hers. There wasn’t much meaning behind hers, but Josh did have a point. It didn’t have a silencer. Perhaps, she should’ve thought of that when she got it. Nevertheless, she put her weapon back in the holster and took Josh’s.
“Thanks, Josh,” she said smiling a little.
Josh shook his finger as Mira relieved him of the weapon. “Atatat, remember, I’m Warlock for now, alright Red? Now come on we have a hike a head of us if we want to get to the other side of the prison in time for the other’s distraction.” And with that he began to move through the forest with practice skill so as not to alert any nearby enemies.
Mira watched as Josh ran ahead of her to get to the other side of the prison and couldn’t help but smile. “Sure thing, Warlock,” she said. With that she ran after him.
Kroot looked around, Solaan had just jumped off to find Vidra and Josh and Mira had already walked away. That means that the partner he had was…
Nobody, great.
Unless some divine providence wanted to send someone his way, then he was going in on his own. He started looking around on the roof of the prison for an entrance. It was surprisingly quiet for how guarded prisons usually are.
Disunity (Part 5)
Solaan glanced between Proxy and Vidra for a moment. An anxious tick in his left foot caused him to stomp repeatedly on the ground.
At last he caught Proxy in the eye and said, “Ah ah, no offense or anything, but the Vidla turian has a point. About you um not being nice or leaderlike or anything? Ah ah, and maybe you don’t know everything about everything. Sorry sorry, don’t mean to be mean… just…” Solaan shrugged uncomfortably, clearly unaccustomed to providing negative feedback. “I think I’d rather follow her and her plan. So…”
He turned away and bounded after the turian. He also disappeared into the foliage, though his loud voice echoed throughout the forest. “HEYA! HEYA, DOCTOR BIOLOGIST TURIAN FRIEND! WAIT FOR ME!”
Josh shrugged and jogged to catch up to Solaan and Vidra, completely ignoring Proxy at this point. Once he caught up he pulled his sniper off his back. “I could be part of the infiltration group. It’s more of my specialty .”
Vidra glanced back at her two tailing her. She hadn’t expected them to follow.
“Sounds good Josh,” she replied. “Focus on your mission, get a group. Solaan, you…” her voice trailed off. She honestly had no idea what to do with him. He was loud and likely liable to give away the infiltration group, but given his general demeanor, probably lacked any formal combat experience…
But she had an idea.
“Solaan, you’re with me. We gotta chat,” she stated. “You get to be a hero in about twenty minutes. But we also gotta make sure you’re a living hero by the end.”
Then she quickly turned to face them. “Okay. So there’s a reason why I changed my clan markings. For the remainder of this mission, I am ‘Ghost’. Might not be bad to choose code names too, in case we get survivors from this who wanna come after us.” She paused. “Uh… who’s um… actually the mission leader? Seeing as how I may have just hijacked your approach.” Please don’t be Solaan please don’t be Solaan…
Solaan was extraordinarily excited at the prospect of working with Vidra. She appeared to think very well of him - first, she spoke well of his scientific research, and now she was providing him the opportunity to stick with her during the mission and be a hero. He immediately suggested his code name to her - Hero - and then went on to answer her explicit questions.
“I’m usually the person who gets the information on these missions from the Collective, so that means the Collective must think I’m a good leader and everything,” answered Solaan. “But the Collective doesn’t establish chain of command with us organic peeps actually. Robots let us figure it out ourselves. But that’s okay. Because I’ve done a great job with every mission so far, and we’ve had a lot of great and grandiose successes.
“Though…” he tapped his foot to the ground a few times thoughtfully “…since you have such a good handle on this mission, I’ll do something unprecedented out of goodwill to my fellow scientific colleague… let’s make you official mission leader for this mission, what do you say?”
Vidra was mildly horrified.
“That is… definitely not a position I wanted to be in,” she replied bluntly. Oh spirits, they’re gonna die if I don’t. “But just for this mission… sure. I guess.”
The grimace on her face was very visible.
“Okay. So Hero. What I need you to do is… attempt to sneak in. Don’t worry, I’ll take point and disable anything we come across, but just… be yourself. Be as… sneaky sneak as you can sneakily be. And when we get spotted, try to sneak some more. But failing that… stand up. Spray the enemy with everything you got. And… shout something like ‘Screw this plan! I am insert fake name here, and this base belongs to us now!’ I’ll seem angry, but I won’t actually be. And then we just shoot and smash everything we can until we get the okay from the infiltration teams… or one of us gets injured and we need to make a retreat. I should be able to get us out, just jump on my back when it gets to that. Sounds good?”
“Sounds more than good. Sounds perfect! I got it. I got it completely,” said Solaan, with no indication whatsoever that he would be able to sneak as sneakily as he could sneakily be.
Proxy hadn’t expected or wanted anyone to follow, because by the time she had handed off the footage to Vidra, she had disappeared, out of sight. She was well within the rebirth facility right now, having an easy advantage being able to shapaeshift. As she looked around and thought of how she hacked into this base only to get dismissed as having “former ties”, she shrugged and clicked her tongue lightly. “Oh, the things I do…” she thought. Infiltration… It was an art she knew all too well. Right, so the building had underground bunkers and elaborate sentries, watchtowers up top, airships even. Heavily guarded and good on the monitoring equipment. So what? The may not have any weaknesses in the sentry ranges, and Vidra and Solaan teams probably probably has an idea like “attempt to sneak in, be an as sneaky sneaky as you can, and when you get spotted get shout screw thing I’m insert fake name here and this base belongs to me and then just smash everything until they get the okay from the infiltration team consisting of Josh and Vidra or be forced to retreat” and that plan completely contridicts where I’m going but hey, it’ll be fine. Sneak in, get hostages safely outta the way, maybe a few docs along the way? Whatever… She had shapeshifted into an inanimate object by now, and was sitting there, waiting, observing, hoping… “as soon as Solaan comes in I’m taking him-no I’m going to lead him and scheme from the sidelines. I’m planting a tracker on them all alright, it’s for their safety, otherwise they might all die. Even miss true neutral might die. ” she thought
While relieved that it was Vidra…a familiar face, who they found, Mira was quiet for the entire conversation between Vidra, Solaan, Josh, and Proxy, but she couldn’t help but smirk in pride when Solaan reaffirmed Vidra’s statement about Proxy not being a true leader. Nevertheless, it was time to get to the bottom of this and complete the mission in gathering information about the Rebirth.
However, as soon as they decided to get start, she was ready to go, and without any hesitation, she ran to catch up to Joshua. “Hey, Joshua,” she finally said. “You think you can take on a partner in this infiltration plan of ours?”
Josh nodded and smiled at the Half-Tangean girl. “Sure, but you’re gonna need a code name, probably something to do with your abilities or personality or something.”
Mira couldn’t help but furrow her eyebrows together in confusion. “Okay…” she said. “W-Why would I need a codename?”
“Well Vidra made the good point that we don’t want anyone who could potentially survive this to know who we are right?” He explained. “Wouldn’t want the Rebirth coming after this little Red-Head would we?” He joked as he ruffled her hair.
Mira couldn’t help but laugh as Josh ruffled her hair. “Who are you calling ‘little?’” she asked. She then stopped when she heard Josh’s name for her. “Actually, I kind of like Red-Head. Let’s go with that one…you know since we’re going with the codename things.”
Josh laughed a bit. “Maybe, it doesn’t roll of the tongue very well though. What about just Red.”
“Even better,” Mira said smirking at the Guardian. “Not bad, Guardian.”
Kroot looked around at the team that was assembled and did a head count. He noticed that someone was missing but couldn’t determine who. He decided to ignore it and said to the the group energetically “I am Kroot” by which he meant “I could help!”

“Well, you guys should get your butts down here,” she said feeling Solaan’s excitement. “We got a job to do!”
“Absolutely! Grandiose! Just grandiose. Let’s go save this planet from disease!” Solaan pumped his fists up and started heading toward the Unity’s exit hatch.
Mira chuckled after hearing Solaan excitedly shouting over the PCA as she waited for her comrades outside the drop ships, and as soon as they arrived, she waved at them greeting them.
“So, what’s the play?” she asked casually. “Are we supposed to meet these guys somewhere?”
“I am Kroot” said Kroot, his words translated to mean “I’m not sure, the message only said to come to the planet.” He looked around and even raised his height so he could see something, but he saw nothing.
“Oh, I was driving us straight where we needed to be,” Solaan said, chipper to respond to Kroot and Mira’s questions. It felt good for him to be the one in the know. “They said the nobleman who contacted me can be met on a private hangar and they sent me the coordinates. So we can just get off this ship and presumably we’ll be meeting them and everything so yeah!”
Upon seeing the mercs exiting the ship, Hughes quickly stepped forward, putting out his hand in welcome. “Thank you ever so much for your quick arrival.” My name is Hughes, I am one of the kings land Barrons. I have been placed in charge of overseeing your investigation.“
“Wonderful, positive wonderful, absolutely wonderful to come quickly and meet you.”
Solaan did not know what to do with Hughes’ outstretched hand, so instead of shaking it, the alien, held out his hand and mirrored the man. He kept it outstretched into space a few moments before pulling it up to his neck and yanking at one of his six splendid collars. Like always, Solaan was dramatically, impractically overdressed.
“Barron Hloos, you are in the presence of the great Captain Sen Solaan Hletabathazha Tsekanhathanacani Nothanhiselabaatjatsathabathana. We are so extraordinarily honored to meet you in this glorious location to do the investigation thingie that we are supposed to do.” Even though the second half of Solaan’s sentence sounded less official than the first half, he proclaimed it all with overdone gallantry.
Hughes blinked a few times, taking a few thoughtful breaths. He then carefully raised his extended hand upwards. “well…great. Im happy to see such enthusiasm in these troubled times. Up top.” Hughes may have been a baron and specialized in formality, but he could not resist finding out just how little this strange captain knew of handshakes
Kroot didn’t catch on to what Hughes was doing and thought that the hand was being offered to him. He reached forward and grabbed the generals hand a started to shake in a way that if a member of his own race had shaken his hand, they would have said was rather weak, but was described by weaker races using many profanities. “I am Kroot” he said, saying what he meant with an added “nice to meet you” afterwards.

“Dear Sirs…It is a matter of urgency that the people of Gondrin receive your assistance. Your reputation of dispatching mercenary experts to deal with our galaxies problems precedes you and, again, we need your help. One of our lords has fallen ill, in a way we can not identify, explain, or cure. We have reason to believe there is foul play involved despite its appearance of a natural phenomenon. What is worse, the sickness is spreading. I understand this is not a common request for mercenaries. But we are desperate and your organization is our last hope. Please send us anyone who can find out the cause of this and a way to stop it. We can worry about a cure later. You will all be rewarded handsomely from the king himself.”

A message pinged on the monitor next to Kroot. He read it for Solaan because Solaan was busy. The contents of the message surprised Kroot at first, however the message soon dawned on him and he went to fetch his best friend and captain. “I am Kroot” he said, telling Solaan that an urgent message had arrived. Not knowing that the captain was asleep. He repetead himself slightly louder to try and get Solaans attention. He quickly grew impatient with the captain’s sleep and picked him up, carrying him over to the monitor and pointing at the message that had been sent.
“Hey, uh, wait wait wait, what?”
Solaan shifted around in Kroot’s arms, trying to figure out this situation. He seemed to come awake quickly enough, twitching rapidly as he squirmed toward the monitor and read the message Kroot was pointing to.
“Oh goodness! Disease? Spreading? That doesn’t sound good!” Solaan shook his head, exclaiming, “Glad you saw this right away, Kaloot! This would be bad if we just didn’t like notice it right away. Don’t want it to spread.
“Alrighty so… I’m feeling rather awesome that we got noticed and hailed about this. Don’t know who this dude person is who sent it to us but hey, they’ve got good taste, they know heroes when they see them! Or not see them… they haven’t met us… but they know we’re heroes and willing to help! Whaddya think, Kaloot? Think we should check this out right away?”
Kroot smiled at Solaan and said “I am Kroot!” Which of course meant a very joyful “yes! They asked for our help! We might me heroes!“
“Yeah yeah yeah you get it!” Solaan jumped upward with a cheer, showing the same happiness as Kroot gave in his smile. “We could be heroes with this latest escapade! Just imagine the galactic news tolling our names as people who saved an EPIDEMIC!
“You know what, I don’t care if we’re on autopilot right now or if someone’s currently steering this thing. Imma gonna march righty on over there and get myself some NEW DESTINATION right now!”
With that, Solaan pranced toward the front of the ship, ready to change the ship’s course immediately.
Upon noticing the mission had been accepted, one of the bots at the hub contacted the ships, speaking to it through its built in micro phone.
“Captain…the nobleman who contacted you can be met on a private hanger /tramsmitting cordinants/…land there when you and your crew are ready to begin”
Solaan was almost to the ship’s bridge and ready to turn the ship toward their new intended destination. When he heard the latest verbal message, he shouted joyously, “Oh look! Great! Directions and assistance! We’ll be off being heroes immediately!”
Proxy meanwhile, had snuck on board the ship that Solaan and kropt were on, lurking somewhere out of sight, maybe on the ceiling or simply behind a chair, who knew? She, too had seen the message on the mission board, but not before kropt and Solaan however. She wasn’t quite keen on going herself - she knew how bad epidemics could be especially since she had recently been looking up various alien diseases found on various planets, and was especially intrigued by the disease planet 4546B, the “carar” virus as they called it. But she realised she couldn’t leave the virus to spread, especially since she knew what alien viruses could do, and she may or may not have been curious if this had anything to do with planet 4546B…
But of course, she’d decided that this was a kind of thing that required her to actually stalk Solaan and those who were going, because she is an idiot who doesn’t know how to do stuff, and also because she wanted to see Solaan act independently with our her. And well, there’s always her “purpose”, and the target was Solaan… Yes she is creepy…and makes no sense… But hey that’s her.
She decided she’d message Solaan on her PCA. She took it out and flipped it open and messaged Solaan, saying that she had seen the mission and was not going, but wanted to offer him some advice. She gave a brief description about the carar virus, as well as the various ways to prevent a spread of an infection. She also told him to be careful and to suspect everything, for an epidemic was most likely one of the most dangerous natural “disasters” in the universe, and could wipe out nations yada yada. Although she knew Solaan might not take it seriously because well, he’s Solaan, she sure hoped he did.
“Much appreciated for the information, Paloksi,” Solaan said, the communication only fueling his mood for the upcoming mission. “As you know, since I’m an earth and physics and astronomy sort of guy, I’m not precisely the person most well-versed in the biological sciences. Didn’t realize you were, though! Very cool, I’ll keep it all in mind, though methinks I’ll also chat up with some experts more closely aligned in the field. What was that name of that tulian I met at my party… oh yes… Vidala! Vidala would be a good person to contact, she’d be a great help in the mission, something like that.
“But regardless, first thing’s first, going to go and fly to the planet. Should probably talk straight with the person who invited me to this disease-ridden place before I go making solutions. Something concocted before I get there is bound to be an incomplete and premature solution as versus the real deal savior of the problem.”
After saying this, Solaan ended his communication with Proxy on his Personal Communication Device and made his final steps into the ship’s bridge.
“of course… I never said to create solutions before knowing what the disease is….just please don’t goof off okay I’m going to stay hidden and you better not accidentally crash into a rock or something because you can’t fly a ship” proxy thought to herself. “Just…please don’t.” she looked back at her PCD and left a message even though the communication had ended, “Right, talk to virda if you need to but don’t go crashing a ship now okay because I know you can’t fly a ship, and crashing a ship is just…no. Okay?”
moe-lazyeye
On the hanger deck of Godrin city, the nobleman who contacted them, Hughes, watched the ships approach. “this is it,” the thought to himself. “these mercenaries are our last chance. They know danger, they know how to beat a challenge, they know how to investigate…” he paused, watching how the ship was being handled as it made its descent. “Do….do they know how to fly a ship?”
It turned out that no one, not even Mira, was aboard the Unity’s bridge. Thus, it was easy for Solaan to nab the controls and try to handle the ship.
It had been a long time since he had piloted any vessels through space, and those ships had been a far different size, class, and construct. One had only enough room for several scientists; the latter, the escape pod, a solo individual - himself. Those flight experiences had gone smoothly enough… the senaalian government would not have allowed a fool to be in charge of such expensive equipment.
This ship was a little different than that to which he was accustomed. He had never piloted anything like this. His eyes peeped around in a rapid study session of the controls. The technology appeared easy enough - standard equipment, typical manual vehicular controls, good computer guidance systems. Yes, he could do this without a problem.
Smoothly the ship glided toward the atmosphere. Solaan frowned, licked his eyeballs a few times, and concentrated on what he would have to do. Entering atmosphere… what was the composition of this planet’s atmosphere, what was its pressure, what was its average temperatures, what velocities would he need to decelerate to before touching atmosphere? The data mentioned nothing on the console screen - that he could see anyway - he’d have to make the best guesses and calculations as he could.
And then his PCD flashed and beeped, indicating a new message received. At once he jumped up, astonished at the noise, and began fighting his own arm to turn the sound off. The message was from Proxy; he quickly glanced at it, trying to skim-read and steer at the same time. It didn’t quite work. The Unity jolted.
With a squeak Solaan returned his primary attention to the controls. The ship stabilized… but veered toward the atmosphere.
Ohhhhh but I didn’t do all my calculations for the descent! he fretted, bracing for the worst.
The ship smoothly entered the atmosphere.
His antenna twitched in relief, and he began to focus on maneuvering the ship toward the coordinates he had been given.
It was only at this point Solaan wondered if perhaps he should have asked everyone else if they wanted to go on this trip. Or at least tell them what he was doing. Oh well. Guess they could find out information now.
Kroot had luckily just managed to stick with Solaan in the adventure. The flight was rough and surprised him, making him lose his balance and accidentally causing damage to another ship. Luckily all Kroot did was break off a storage units door. Kroot recognised the heat of an atmospheric entry and looked towards the front of the ship, he noticed a small twitch on Solaan and wondered about his friend. "I am Kroot" he said, asking if he was okay.
