— shopping at memory lane
baekhyunxkr:
@kryuqi
the first time he sees her is when he’s busy deciding between two equally soft mangos. she’s standing across from him picking out a bunch of bananas seemingly without care, and usually he wouldn’t even notice; but she seems familiar, somehow, so he gives her a glance. probably just someone he’s served alcohol, he figures, as he moves on towards the dairy aisle.
the second time he spots her, grabbing a bag of toilet paper - the four layer super soft stuff because there are two things in life he doesn’t save money on, this and food - is when he gets a weird feeling of wrongness in his gut. no, he doesn’t know her from his job - he’d have managed to place her by now if he had, his face memory much better than this. but he can’t remember where else he would’ve met her either, because he’s certain he doesn’t know her from his brief time at university and she looks too young for that anyway, considering he hasn’t been in what is over five years now. she can’t possibly have gone to school with him, then, so maybe she was one of the kids he taught at the dojang. or she just looks similar to someone else.
it all clicks into place as he drops frozen peas into his cart, and he’s in shock for a few moments, forgetting to close the freezer until his skin grows uncomfortably cold. what the hell is yuqi doing in seoul, on her own at the grocery store? it’s only when he looks around just a minute later, intent on finding her and finally spotting her in front of the snacks that he notices that she isn’t wearing the sort of stuff he’d expect on her, and her hair isn’t as immaculate as his father’s business partner’s daughter’s always was. he abandons his cart on the side before approaching her, careful in his pronounciation just in case.
“yuqi? what are you doing here?”
there is a riot of vibrant shades, the sweet smell of artificial flavor and sugar wafting around the few square feet. sugar-covered fruit jellies are stacked high on one display, while the others are adorned with liquorice of all sorts. sour candies and fizzy cola bottles stand about a foot away, nestled between a colorful collection of salt water taffy and rock candies.
with her eyes trained on the chocolate pralines, admiring their sparkling purple wrappers, she doesn’t notice she’s under the curious stare of another shopper. in fact, she isn’t even aware someone is approaching, lost in the internal debate between nougat and toffee, until the male has crossed the distance from the freezer section and is standing a few feet in front of her shopping cart.
yuqi glances up towards him, her attention torn away from the heap of candies she’s tossed into the cart, and tilts her head curiously, listening to the cautious tone he uses to address her. she blinks, almost unsure as to why he was speaking as though he wasn’t sure she could fully understand the language, before the realization dawns on her in the same way it did him.
“ baekhyun! “ she recognizes him, perhaps by his manner of speaking, similar to the way he had usually addressed her when they were younger. she couldn’t recall anyone else who would match his elocution. “ it’s so nice to see you again! “ though it’s been quite some time, she smiles warmly towards him, as though they’ve just seen each other the other day. “ i’ve just finished my shift at the cafe, so i figured i’d stop at the grocery store before it gets too dark. “
she glances at the shopping cart he’s stranded a few aisles over and laughs, “ it looks like you’re doing the same! “
