Saiki Kusuo no Ψnan chapter 120 Happy Halloween
if the ocean can calm itself, so can you. we are both salt water mixed with air.
Nayyirah Waheed, “Meditation” (via wordsnquotes)
{ M-21 }
It’s a start, from here we have to work our way around. “That’s a start, you want to be able to answer this next time you are asked, yes?” He couldn’t blame E for not understanding, he and the others were still learning, but spending time with one another they have slowly been learning about having their own freedom and their own choices. They have all been scared at some point, even frightened, but they were never rushed or forced to do anything they don’t want to do, it was all their own choice and their own free will. If their choice was wrong then they would learn from it, simple as that.
“I cannot tell you how to be a person, but I know you can learn, I’m still learning even now, I can say that I feel more alive than before. When I was still part of Union I was nothing more than an experiment subject, something that Union wanted to test until I was of no more use to them. Now, now I have a choice. I’m treated more like a human than athing, and bit by bit I have been given the opportunity to talk to others and get to know them.”Perhaps working close with the children is a huge help, they’re so young and offer a different point of view than an adult can give.
“It’s not something easy or something you can learn in one day, it’s a process. Perhaps miss Rakeria sent you to us so you can learn step by step like we did. You won’t see what we see, but you’ll eventually see how others look at things, listen to another’s point of view and beliefs, not to mention being able to choose for yourself and try new things. Don’t rush it, don’t force yourself to do anything you don’t want, but do try to take that step. We all don’t talk as much, but we understand where you come from so if you ever feel like talking, or just spending time with us feel free to. We may not even utter a word at times, but knowing that someone is there willing to lend a helping hand or an ear is more than enough than being alone and isolated.” This is what Union has done to us, to them, brainwash us until we are nothing but their puppets to control and get rid of when they get bored, that is what I want to stop from continuing, but alone I know I cannot.
“I can tell you one thing we all have in common, we despise the Union and wish to get rid of it, we can’t let others go through what we did, it’s not fair to them at all.”
“So that’s why,” quietly leaves them, an answer they hadn’t quite expecting to reach coming together. They put their newfound information to the side for now though--they hadn’t come to immediately question why they make targets of themselves for the Union, after all.
While the simple answer to that initial question was ‘yes’, at this point E would rather not hear the inquiry directed their way again. They’d been told time and time again that this--understanding and appreciating what it meant to be ‘free’--would take time. That the answers would come in time and that they’d learn what it meant to not only be a person but to be themselves. They just needed patience and an open mind. Meet and experience others and what the world had to offer and the rest would follow.
Well, one thing they’d learned was that they were more impatient than they’d realized. Going so long without a clear purpose or set objective--this was nothing like biding time before a kill or waiting with bated breath for the next round of experiments to begin. It--they, wasn't used to exist without a purpose laid out for them, as pathetic as that sounded. And that fact was the most frustrating thing it had to deal with thus far.
“I will...keep that in mind. If anything, I believe that you are accurately guessing the Lord's intentions.” E says after a pause, brows furrowing as they mull over what they’d been told--specifically the bit about their shared hatred of the Union. Perhaps that wouldn’t be so easy for them to save those questions for later after all.
“Have you...carried that with you for long?” The teen asks, violet eyes boring into silver with ill contained curiosity. “That hatred I mean--since before you left the Union? If you don’t mind my asking."
{ Kamijou }
Hey, if they were so subsidized by researchers that they cost half the price of a regular carrot, wouldn’t anyone give carrots grown in space a go? “Well, they’ll make some great claims about the nutritional differences that mean nothing to an ordinary person, but in the end, if it looks like a carrot and tastes like a carrot, it’s still pretty much the same in your stomach, right?” At such a wonderful price, Kamijou thought that he wouldn’t care even if it was slowly killing him from the inside. The dangerous kinds of scrapes he got caught up in must have been shaving years off his life anyway, so what did it matter if some carrot had a 0.1% chance of causing cancer?
Taking out his own wallet, Kamijou procured his own train fare and bought his ticket from the man behind the counter. Now he came to think of it, he hadn’t really had any need to go to District 4 in his short stretch of living memory. He was sure he could find his way around, even so. It would be embarrassing to lead this newcomer all the way out there on a train and end up getting lost.
“The trains run pretty regularly, so there should be one coming soon,” he mused aloud like he was just trying to tempt fate. “Did you take the train often wherever you lived before? I think its pretty convenient that Academy City has such good public transport, but curfew does mean that everything shuts down pretty early. Catching a train at midnight would be impossible.”
In the end, Kusuo shrugs. ‘I guess.’ He’s probably going to wind up eating the carrots anyway, and so long as they don’t taste like the labs they were developed in, Kusuo didn’t quite care how they came into being. With all the processed foods that existed even outside of the academy that was consumed regularly, one specifically designed to be healthier was likely wasn’t going to be any worse for his health than anything he’s consumed this far in his life.
He follows the other’s lead, purchasing his own ticket for the train before scanning the tracks for any sign of the locomotive. ‘Not often,’ he answers. ‘I’ve...never really had an issue getting where I need to by foot.’ Or teleportation. But of course, Kusuo isn’t going to mention that. ‘There was this one mall my classmates liked to go to in the next city over though. Different activities on each floor.’ And way too crowded for Kusuo’s tastes, with the overabundance of active thoughts.
‘How regular is ‘regular’ is there a schedule somewhere?’
{ Raskreia }
How should she explain such a thing? Though the Lord was eloquent with her words, she hadn’t realized that the concepts that were known by nature would be the most difficult to explain. That must be the things they have taken for granted. Well, since they aren’t playing a game of cat and mouse anymore, she supposed she could elaborate further on that night, now that E would listen without stubbornness.
❝ Primarily, my persuasion was so that you may live. If I have learned anything about the Union, it is that they do not like to keep their word so easily. By luck, I had found you that night. And I could foresee a grim future if you had stayed with the Union. The way you spoke at the time… I did not like it. Yet it had to be their work. They brainwashed such a young one like you into thinking you were disposable… ❞
A pause. It was of the past, but thinking about it elevated her sadness. What else had the Union done to humans? She knew in the past, Nobles had taken to enslaving them, and recently she had heard rumors about werewolf experiments. Truly no one was safe from the greed of the corrupt people in this world…
❝ I suppose in time you will learn just what freedom is truly like. It does not have to be immediate, of course, though I suspect a rules-bound place like Lukedonia is not the best place to start… hm. Once you have rested, we may discuss it later if you would like. I may have an idea that can solve this dilemma. Though, some of my Nobles wish to meet you. I hope that is fine with you. ❞
It offers no immediate response other than a nod. While it couldn’t honestly say that opinion had changed much within these most recent hours, it was more open to the idea of discovering that worth she so firmly believed in. That was a step in the right direction at least, and helping people seemed to mean quite a bit to her.
“I’ve no objections,” it replies, violet eyes staring inquisitively at the Lord. Whatever ‘solutions’ she had to offer were decidedly better than its complete lacking in ideas of how to proceed. As for the nobles...E wouldn’t describe itself as ‘sociable’ but it wasn’t going to refuse interaction with the nobles when in their land.
“...I would like to express my gratitude to you once more,” it said at length. “Rules bound or not, I wouldn’t have...alternatives or even considered...anything, really, if not for your persistence. I thank you for that, Raskreia.”
{ Noble }
❝ It is worth it. Words cannot describe it, but no matter how short in length or transient in existence, those emotions and freedom you will feel… it is worth the lifespan you will live. You do not need to protect those who cannot protect themselves, that is the duty bestowed upon myself. However, should you develop such desires to protect, it seems to make you much happier once it is accomplished. ❞
She wasn’t a prime example of happiness, if it hadn’t been apparent from this meeting. Consistently did her lips press into a thin line of apathy, though her brows creased to a somber frown, gazing out on the night with a pensive crimson gaze. Perhaps this played into her desire to help, but the faintest touches of empathy begin to creep into her mind. It wasn’t like she hadn’t already started to understand how this person must have felt, but for some reason, their words made her feel quite sorrowful.
How it must have felt, to be unable to feel emotions like anyone else surrounding them could normally feel. To not have something to fight for nor something one wanted to protect. To be unable to pursue self-happiness because of the chains cast on by another person. It was different yet similar to her five hundred years of hatred; focusing on the one thing that did not make her happy. It was suffocating, confining one’s mind to solely one unhealthy thing. She did not want that for this person, no matter how much they tried to deny it.
❝ You are not a tool. You are a living human who should not have to break in order to be released from the threat the Union holds over you. I cannot tell you what good it will be, simply because it is a matter of feeling. You must feel it in order to understand why I persist in my pursuit of your freedom. The weak do not always have to die just as sometimes the strong can become vulnerable. This world is not black and white like that. ❞
Despite the distance, she could still capture his voice. If she played her cards right, she should be able to locate him based on how he sounded, since he was responding rather consistently to her queries. This may have seemed like a “typical, arrogant Noble” thing to do, stubbornly enforcing her opinion, but if she could save this person from the Union, she could hardly care about what others thought about her obstinate actions.
The experiment listened, hearing but not fully processing what the noble’s explanation. Something that can only be learned through experience and sensations whose value one could only comprehend after experiencing it firsthand. Something that could only be explained so vaguely couldn’t possibly be worth as much as the noble insisted. Yet its mind still lingered on the other members of the Union--those who exhibited an entire textbook’s worth of ever changing emotions. Emotions that it had been told it had no use for, but that even those who outclassed it expressed regularly.
Still. They failed far more often than E and it’s more detached compatriots. Those ‘emotions’ leading them to act out of turn, make mistakes and even drive those like the traitors the noble was clearly associated with to defect.
“How one can claim to live freely with a target on their backs seems more like a paradox than a satisfactory existence,” It muses aloud, more a statement than a question for her to answer. “How you can be so thoroughly convinced about the worth of a person you’ve never met before is even more puzzling. I’m far from an expert on feelings, but your conviction seems more based on principle than firsthand experience.” But it was that very same conviction that kept it listening. It knew it shouldn’t--that it needed to stop conversing and return to its mission before she compromised it any further. Yet...
“I’m not among those your duty calls you to protect. I execute the will of those you would call a threat to your...charges, and even then, I offer no threat to you or yours at present.” It was what the weak needed protection from. “I’ve done nothing to warrant more than mistrust from you. Are so duty bound that you can’t accept that there are things not worth your ‘salvation’? That not everything with a pulse is inherently worth consideration?”

[[ … It was sudden but there was a ‘G’ on my side of the wall and I tried killing it by throwing what I have in hand. ]] she answered, looking away as she felt the faint annoyance from her twin. Sure, it wasn’t the best course of action but it was a cockroach, can he really blame her?
‘Oh,’ is all he says. Suddenly the entire situation seems less absurd. While Kusuo’s usual method was avoidance until someone else could deal with the vermin, the women of the household were made of far braver materials than he, in this sense. But now there was a concern. ‘...did you get it?’

[[ Don’t get mad, but the wall between our rooms broke. ]] despite the lack of expression, she appears to be sincerely apologizing about it.
‘...Walls don’t just break on their own.’ While there’s no ire in his tone, it’s certainly not lacking in exasperation. And here he’d thought her strength management was no longer a concern. ‘I’ll fix it. But what even happened?’
