The mere existence of detransitioners, even ones who aren't gender critical, blows their ideology to pieces. The best defence they can muster is "oh, don't listen to those people, they were never *really* trans." Which raises the question of why people who aren't *really* trans are transitioning and being medicalised.
The sane response to this is to say that there should be more gatekeeping. And there are corners of the trans community who advocate for this. But then the question arises of how are you supposed to tell if someone *really* is trans in order to separate them from the fake trans people who you want to gatekeep transition from. And that's a dilemma most of them are too scared to grapple with.
So the best they can come up with is "anyone who identifies as trans is 100% trans up to the very moment they claim to no longer be trans, at which point they retroactively never were trans." There is no way of knowing who is going to detransition in the future, so this means that a lot of the people they are saying we must affirm the identities of are, in the future, going to be revealed to have never been trans to begin with.
I can only conclude that every trans identified person is in a sort of limbo state of being 100% trans and never having been trans to begin with. And the superposition will not collapse until they either detransition, or die. Schrödinger's trans.
