#7 The Village (2004) dir. M. Night Shyamalan “What good is it to tell you you are in my every thought from the time I wake? What good can come from my saying that I sometimes cannot think clearly or do my work properly? What gain can rise of my telling you the only time I feel fear as others do is when I think of you in harm? That is why I am on this porch, Ivy Walker. I fear for your safety before all others. And yes, I will dance with you on our wedding night.”

I think there are valid moral concerns about true crime but I disagree with the idea that it perpetuates stranger danger fear specifically, which is especially annoying because it’s used to downplay women’s fears about strange men and treat them as hysterical. But some of the most famous true crime cases involve families or spouses as either the known or suspected perpetrator(s).

I have to imagine that a lot of the generational differences in “how much parents owe their kids” (broadly speaking) has a lot to do with the availability of highly effective reliable birth control and better sex education… like abortion has been widely available since the 70s and has been an option although of course there’s been women who couldn’t afford it. But GETTING pregnant…. If you’re a woman in you’re twenties or thirties with an implant that lasts for years that’s as effective as tubal ligation that you basically never think about having children just has to be such an intentional choice in most cases. It does make sense for women in the past to view pregnancy and then parenthood as something that just happened to them and less likely to feel this lifelong child comes first always obligation.
