He took Zane’s hand, pulling himself closer until their bodies just barely touched in the bubbling water. […] Ty rested his arms on Zane’s shoulders and kissed him soundly. The warmth that had never dissipated began to churn inside him, love and desire warring for his attention. He groaned and delved his tongue between Zane’s lips, seeking something more. Zane pulled him close as they kissed, responding to Ty’s fervor with calm, consuming focus.

Ty smiled against his lips and finally forced himself to pull away. Zane’s face was shadowed, but Ty knew every feature by heart. The laugh lines that mingled with frown lines, the curve from his broken nose, the hints of gray feathered at his temples. His warm brown eyes that could go hard as obsidian in a blink.

He slid his hand down the side of Zane’s face. “Marry me,” he whispered.

Zane grinned, biting his tongue as he narrowed his eyes like he was considering it. Then he shook his head once. “No, thank you.”

Ty snorted. “So polite this time.”

After another long silence, Zane gave a quiet sigh. “Becky died this time of year,” Zane said quietly. “Weather’s about the same. Fancy graveyard.” He shrugged.

“Who is Becky?” Ty asked in exasperation.

Zane kept his eyes focused out the window. “My wife.”

Ty stared at him for a long moment, eyes drifting down to the wedding ring Zane still wore but they’d never talked about, then he looked away without commenting. He pressed his lips together tightly as they rode in silence. “I’m sorry,” he finally offered.

Nodding slowly, Zane finally said, “Thanks.” It was almost inaudible.

Okay wait I got it.

So Ty is a shit Dom, really. He’s too hard, too cold, too aggressive for Zane’s type of sub. As a boyfriend he toes the line of a good and bad boyfriend. He’s secretive and emotionally manipulative. Zane isn’t sure if it’s all intentional but he bears the brute of it all.

People start to take notice.

Suddenly it isn’t just Zane wilting under ‘the look’, the singularly most disappointed look ever cut his way that tears him down to the point that even standing on his own is never a thought, Kelly and Nick see it too. The former is quiet in his defense of his friend. Keeping his head down while maneuvering into the space between Ty and Zane; letting Nick offer his presence as a comforting reassurance.

It’s Nick who suggests to Zane that maybe he and Ty should take some time apart. It’s Nick who reminds him the just because he’s a sub doesn’t mean he’s to take such abuse. And it’s that word abuse that had Zane pulling away because that’s exactly what he signed up for, right? He’s supposed to be beat down and taken apart viciously and left on his own for awhile afterwards. He’s supposed to be confused on something and then punished for messing up an order, right?

That’s what a D/s relationship is supposed to be like, right?

Zane Garret totally lost some of his hearing during Crash&Burn. There are at least two times in P&P where it is mentioned that Zane couldn’t hear while standing/sitting in close proximity of SW, and Abi doesn’t do that kind of stuff by accident.

This gives me the feels bc now I have a personal head cannon of Z keeping it from Ty and Ty finding out anyway and FREAKING out. Ugh my boys. I just want to smoosh their faces.

It had been 7 hours since they started trying to wake Zane up, 420 minutes since they’d started to reduce the sedation medication he was on, 25,200 seconds and still no sign that his husband was going to open his eyes.

Ty was sick with worry.

He knew it wouldn’t happen instantly, he’d been warned as much but he had expected to see something before now, especially after what had happened earlier.
