taking the ferry through the strait is, i think, as close as we can get to swimming through our home waters with our pod. i keep looking out the window hoping to spy another orca even though i know they wouldn't get close to an engine this loud.

for further context, we're on our anniversary trip with our husband.

yesterday we went to a whale museum, which - because we are in the san juan islands - was significantly focused on the southern resident orcas. i got to hear so much song from them (organized by pod!), see their geneology, and read multiple exhibits on residents who have sadly passed away. despite the tragedy looming in many exhibits, i was so happy. there was also a good number of exhibits on baleen whales and smaller toothed whales that are local to or travel through this region, including a very interesting plaque describing hybridization between harbor and dalls porpoises.

i got an L pod shirt and an orca plushie before we left.

How Wolfy is the Nonhuman Community?

It is something that is quite often repeated in therian spaces is the abundance of wolves in particular. Rather than doing the methode where a bunch of species are listed I am curious how close the community on average is to wolf.

Please select the closest common clade. If you do not have a nonhuman identity, please select the bottom result if you wish to see the results to avoid skewing the information. If you have multiple types select the closest (or most significant depending on your desire). If your type is not classified such as theriomythics, please select the Other option. Addendum: Please put domestic dogs until Canis for C. Familiaris even if modern taxonomy sets domestic dogs as subspecies of C. Lupus. The result of a single dominant allele, about 10% of jaguars have evolved to have black (or melanistic) coats, though scientists aren't completely sure why. A study in 2020 found that 25% of the jaguars that lived in dense forests in Costa Rica were melanistic, much more than the global average, suggesting that the mutation occurs due to camouflage advantages.
