Seeing old photos and footage of 20th century Philippines really makes me feel a bit bitter, like seriously we were on the way to becoming a really prosperous country: strong economy, abundant natural resources, strategic location in the Pacific, the works. A century of severe corruption and mismanagement and now we're here, a hopeless cesspit for whose citizens the only salvation is somehow scrounging up enough to leave and find a better life elsewhere--if you're lucky.
The children can barely read, workers are underpaid, the citizens keep falling for the same fascist rhetoric, and the people who want better for the country are either suppressed or worn down into apathy, overwhelmed by the futility of changing this place for the better.
