In The Motion Picture we aren’t really given an explanation for how Spock found out about the V'ger crisis or the particular reason why he failed kolinar.

In an episode of ENT T'Pol tells Trip that when Vulcans mate they form a link over which they can share thoughts, memories, and the like.

In the novelisation of TMP (written by Roddenberry) we are shown the moment when Kirk finds out about V'ger, Kirk thinks that the Klingons have “become wall exhibits in hell”. Then light years away spock hears/sees/feels this:

TLDR: Spock and Kirk banged at least once during the five year mission.

I keep thinking a big part of why fans love Spock so much is because we look at him through Kirk’s eyes. You can’t help but feel the same way as Kirk.

I look at Kirk and I can feel the huge amount of love for Spock sparkling in his eyes. I really feel it deep in my heart. No one will ever convince me that they’re just friends. Because apparently they’re not. Just look at Jim. He’s lost forever.
