I'm a Special Victim of Special Victims Unit

Since I was about ten, I have been obsessed with Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. Whether it was the underage victims, or the insane rape and murderers, I don’t really know. What I do know, however, is that after watching approximately 300 episodes over the last year that I could honestly watch this show forever.

Overall, I think my favourite character is Olivia Benson. Not only is she badass, but she’s not the ordinary female hero most crime shows incorporate. Passionate, talented and single are a huge statement for feminism globally.

Every single episode is depressing. There’s always a rape, a lie, a villain, a molester, a jail sentence, a missing person, a death. In its entirety however, the fact that they almost always get justice for one of the characters gives people just that small hope. It shows that even though all these horrible things can happen, you can get justice. You can do what’s right.

The fact that a TV show can do that for someone blows my mind. That it is so entertaining purely because it excites you and you become attached to characters that don’t really exist. That, for me, is entertainment. It’s why I chose it as my major. I’m literally studying how to entertainment. Entertainment is changing someone’s emotions, opinions or even life.

And I think… that it’s pretty darn awesome.

Mariska deserves an Emmy for delivering that line with a straight face.  Although from what I know of her and her sense of humor, there is no way this was the first take.

Horror movies have never been my favourite. In fact, I’ve barely ever watched them unless I was forced to, and I’m not even exaggerating when I say I flipped a couch at one point in pure shock – but if there’s one horror movie I love, it’s The Loved Ones (2010).

An entirely Australian film based in rural Victoria, a teenage boy, Brent is asked by outcast, Lola to the school dance. After politely declining, Lola forms an extreme obsession, and Brent is then faced with the fate Lola induces on all her obsessions. After being kidnapped and tortured by Lola and her father, the insane and incestuous undertones are enough to make your stomach turn – even without the gory torture methods.

Since watching this, I jump at the opportunity to watch any Australian based films, and honestly I am yet to be disappointed by one. Australian films seem to know how to horrify their audience in the most innovative ways. Every little detail is planned out perfectly. Everything is shot perfectly. Other Australian films such as I Am You (2009) and The Vanished (2011) have all presented a truly gruesome storylines, including all sorts of disgusting themes and all incorporating hard-core torture – including sleep deprivation for the week prior to viewing! When watching these films, they bring intense horror to a whole new level. An internal level which I have never experienced. A level which will be hard to beat.

The Spyro Saga Continues...

Just yesterday, I met a guy at a bar. Now, before you judge me, he was a friend of a friend of mine. It was getting pretty late in the night and after a while dancing I came to find him playing on his phone. The awesome part of it was he was playing Spyro, my favourite video game to this day.

So naturally I got excited and started talking to him about all the different games and characters and what not, and it made me think of how I’ve been playing the same game my entire life, but on different consoles. It all started one rainy day at my uncle’s house. He was sitting there playing his PS1, and there I saw it – the sparkling purple dragon of my dreams.

I literally spent our Christmas holiday there playing nothing but PlayStation. Hours on end, addicted to charging, firing and beating the bad guys! Little did I know, that this was merely the first installment of what was yet to be one of the biggest obsessions of my life.

PS1, PS2, PS3, Game Boy Advanced, Nintendo DS, Nintendo DS Lite, and Nintendo 3DS are just a few of the consoles I’ve upgraded to over the years. Each all accompanied by a Spyro the Dragon game. All taking a solid 48 hours to complete each, I can safely say I have wasted a week or two of my life purely focused on this little dude.

If only I could focus on my university work like that…

SHAKESPEARE SYNOPSIS

Shakespeare. A nightmare that I never expected to endure again once high-school had finished. Last night, however, I had the pleasure of experiencing Shakespeare in a very innovative and entertaining way.

BBC and St Aidans’ joined forces to create a great portrayal and performance of a collaboration of several famous Shakespearean scenes that not only encompassed the tragedy and emotion of Shakespeare’s plays, but also provided a witty, fun and understandable adaptation. These were then linked together, and presented in a chronological order to create an entirely new story that switched between Shakespearean times and the present.

As far as school plays go, their presentation was of a very high standard. The atmosphere was created through smoke machines and decorations from the moment you came near the stage. What was most impressive, however, was that they allowed the cast to mingle with the audience, as long as they were in character. Several times they ran through the audience, or spoke rhetorically to surrounding spectators, in turn, adding to the shock and humor. The use of many props and gestures further enhanced the meaning behind the words, which in turn, engaged an audience of all ages by making Shakespeare relatable.

In the free brochure handed out at the start, I was surprised to find that many of my high-school friends had actually contributed highly to the composing of the script. Obviously, they hadn’t rewritten the famous Shakespearean scenes, but the joining sections were completely original. By the end of this marvelous performance, I was completely satisfied with the event overall. It was cleverly portrayed so I could fully understand, it was a completely original play written by cast members

and best of all, it left me in stitches!

Rock 'n' Roll at Rics'

Howdy tumblrs! I'm Lyndall, and this is my blog about entertainment forms I may (or may not) have had the luck to experience.

After months of asking, I'd finally agreed to come along to one of my work colleague's band gigs in Fortitude Valley. I was late, as always, and turned up not expecting much. After stumbling around trying to find the venue, I finally made it Rics' Bar, just in time for their first song.

Their set up was great. Starting with a building song to really get people into it, and working up into their really rock 'n' roll type of music. Their music was rusty and intense and beautiful at the same time. A clean mixture of sounds that just made you want to head bang along! What topped the night off for me, however, was the venue they were playing in. Rics' bar has a vintage bar feel, with band posters and concert details plastered all over the walls. Through the hall at the back of the room, there's a large outdoor area with a canopy of an old vine tree, lanterns, and vintage couches lining the outside walls.

I felt that the venue truly gave the performance the edge to portray an old rock vibe. It's the perfect place to perform intimate rock performances, as it creates a great atmosphere in which to really appreciate good artists. Overall, Rics' Bar really impressed me with their well thought out concept, and their ability to present it without becoming tacky or intense. I would definitely go there again, purely for their talent for changing a venue into a whole experience.
