If I had one thing to say about the way I did, it’s that in order for me to develop as a writer, instead of concluding a war story… that is, yes, yes, yes. I thought it would be good if, maybe, I could highlight the sensuous elements… to the point that you’d think, “Could Char and Amuro be gay?” I think fiction writing is, more than anything… like I just said, about conveying that sensuality, having the audience pick up on it… if they can’t, that’s no good.”

Saying: “You’re worthy of being my rival!”, he abandons his position as general of an entire army in order to pursue his foe… Amuro himself had been Char’s genuine motive. He enters their final battle not as the son of Zeon Deikun or the leader of Neo Zeon but as Char Aznable the man, at long last. To Char, Amuro is a rival with whom he feels compelled to settle the score. But it is also only when fighting Amuro that Char is able to reveal the depths of his heart, from which he denied even Nanai entry.”

“Speaking of the first film, that [sensuality] isn’t limited to the scene between Amuro and Frau Bow. I believe it exists in Char and Amuro’s reunion as well. Kamille, a foreign body, gets between them so that everyone watching thinks: “You idiot!” Why that reaction? It’s because, in response to the sexuality between these two men, somewhere within all the viewers is the urge to shout: “Quit interfering, you’re just some punk kid!” That’s what I think (laughs).”

Interviewer: “So after watching the first film, which was also your introduction to Zeta Gundam, what were your thoughts?”
Yukana: “I came to the conclusion that nothing can beat the bond between Char and Amuro. The subtitle of the second film is Lovers, but I think Char and Amuro are the biggest lovers of all (laughs). I call them that, but their relationship transcends gender. For Char, there’s only Amuro, and for Amuro, there’s only Char… that was my impression.”
Interviewer: “Hmm, that’s perceptive of you (laughs).”

Tomino: “Amuro is fond of Char. So yes, he had an idea.”

“From his own response, Amuro knew Lieutenant Quattro was Char. Why else had his body gone so stiff? He felt it was out of true surprise that he now held his breath. The man, blonde with sunglasses, jumped off the crane; the way he carried himself was familiar to Amuro. “Why…?” Amuro gazed calmly at the man approaching him. His manner of walking was beautiful. “Char…” Amuro muttered. No hatred welled within him.”
