H
Not Gay, or TSOT by Steve Thompson
Late to the party, I know, but I finally read the shooting script of this episode dated 25 March 2013. And I am feeling the way Sherlock did when John asked him to be his best man. Baffled. This is from the same author who wrote the TRF script? Because it is really, really terrible not good. No wonder Mofftiss decided to re-work it and put their names to it as well.
Sorry to say but this is not Sherlock as we know it. This is a comedy, and not a very good one at that. It lacks the quality of mixing fun and sadness, irony and subtlety. Still, it is a fascinating experience to compare what was there and what they made of it. I have no idea if I will find the time to go through the whole script (and I have no idea if anyone would be interested) but let me give you one example I have not seen discussed before.
We all know that there is a pattern of Sherlock never ever declaring his sexuality or denying that he is in a relationship with John. Sure, we have John “Not Gay” Watson, but we never get to see Sherlock “Not In A Relationship With John” Holmes. Now please have a look at this:
Just imagine they had filmed it like this. It would have destroyed so many things that come before and after - Sherlock dancing alone in 221b, Sherlock looking at the chair, Sherlock leaving the wedding. On the other hand it would not because they are not in this script. Not a single one of them.
If they had filmed it like that there would have been no Sherlock taking drugs after the wedding (Canon!) and no tarmac scene because it would not have made any sense. Actually, they could have scrapped the whole of TAB as well.
Sherlock clearly stating that he is not gay is something that Mofftiss avoided throughout the whole show. And the very fact that they cut this dialogue and went instead for THE SPEECH and Sherlock dancing because he had always loved it and leaving the wedding alone with his armour on is quite telling.
(If you are interested in further comparisons, please drop me a hint.)

Holmes adores his Watson.

you can’t just leave this in the tags! Watson knows his job and his partner so well that he can afford to care for Holmes while studying chinese pottery! (plus this will bring to a lovely shot of Watson studying stretched on the sofa!)
And here he is! His husband friend and colleague asked him to become an expert and he’s using the old uni tecniques to learn everything for the following 48 hours and then forget it all. (i wonder how many times he did so, studying medicine)

Victorians in general: Eh Dracula is trash, we like The Beetle better ://
Arthur Conan Doyle: BEST BOOK EVER I HAVE THREE NEW BLORBOS NOW!!
Okay I looked up Hound of the Baskervilles’ publishing date out of curiosity because the gothic horror atmosphere of that book is IMPECCABLE, and lo and behold! 1902, five years after Dracula!
I love the idea that Dracula was the gothic horror gold standard ACD was looking up to for Baskervilles, particularly since it was such a genre departure from his other Sherlock Holmes stories. It even isolates Watson as he nervously digs into the mysteries, as he keeps faithful notes of all the details he can for Holmes! Which Holmes relies on to crack the case, just like Mina does with Jonathan’s diary!
Hell there’s even a scene of a woman begging Watson (thinking he’s someone else) to flee or he’ll meet his doom.
None of this ever occurred to me while reading it, since it doesn’t feel derivative at all, but knowing how much ACD admired Dracula as a book makes that influence really stand out!
For those who enjoy the first chapters of Dracula, PLEASE read Hound of the Baskervilles!!
There are excellent observations here about The Hound of the Baskervilles, and of course Doyle and Stoker were friends and definitely shared a mutual enthusiasm for each other’s writing, but I must point out that Doyle wrote a lot of fiction apart from the Sherlock Holmes stories, and had written gothic tales (even arguably some vampire tales) before Dracula was published. Among the Sherlock Holmes stories, you could make an argument for The Musgrave Ritual (1893) as a traditional gothic tale, in addition to a few of the post-Hound ones.
I’ll note also that Stoker wrote a short novel in 1911 called Lair of the White Worm (yes, it inspired the psychedelic 1988 film), which bears a lot of similarities to Doyle’s 1910 story The Terror of Blue John Gap. Their interests were certainly intertwined on occasion!
To be clear, I do think Dracula was an influence on The Hound of the Baskervilles (one of several), but Doyle was already well versed (and well published) in the genre before Dracula.
some screencap redraws i did of sherlock! i actually did these a while ago but i wasn’t satisfied enough with them to upload them. i touched them up a bit as a warm up!
I drew this smoll johnlock dancing drawing and i always wanted to try making a repeating pattern so I did! Comes in pink, blue and green varieties :) Free for personal use (e.g. blog backgrounds) as long as you credit me! 💗
Oh, blame it on the illustrator, he’s out of control!
