The Perfective vs The Imperfective Aspect - Russian

In Russian, most verbs have something called an aspect pair. For example, читать (imperfective) and прочитать (perfective). Russian tenses are very simple, but verbal aspects help to fill in the shades of grey. 

A quick note: the perfective aspect has no present tense - it exists in the infinitive, future and past. Just to mess with you, perfective verbs in the future tense are conjugated as if they were in the present.

When you use the Imperfective:

For a process, or an ongoing repeated action

-Action in general

-Repeated actions

-Duration of time

When you use the Perfective:

A one-time action, or to emphasise finishing something

-When you want to emphasise the result or the completion of a one-time action. Perfective phrases sometimes use words that imply completion such as finally, already, at 8 o’clock, in three hours etc.

EXAMPLES:

(in the infinitive)

IMPERFECTIVE

я хочу читать книгу. - I want to read a book (I want to be involved in that action)

PERFECTIVE

я хочу прочитать книгу. - I want to finish a book (I want to both read and finish a book -> there will be a result

(in the present)

IMPERFECTIVE

я читаю книгу. - I am reading a book. (At the moment)

я часто читаю книги. - I often read books. (generally, or repeatedly)

PERFECTIVE - NO PRESENT TENSE

(In the future)

IMPERFECTIVE

я буду читать книгу. - I will read a book. (I will be involved in that action)

PERFECTIVE

я прочитаю книгу. - I will finish a/the book. (I will both read the book and finish it)

(In the past)

IMPERFECTIVE

я читал книгу. - I was reading a book (I was involved in that action)

я часто читал книгу. - I often read books/I used to read books (generally or repeatedly)

PERFECTIVE

я прочитал книгу. - I finished the book

Forming the Perfective Aspect

-Sometimes it adds a prefix, common prefixes are по, с, вы, на, при, and про

завтракать –> позавтракать (to have breakfast)

делать –> сделать (to do)

стирать –> выстирать (to wash [clothes])

писать –> написать (to write)

готовить –> приготовить (to prepare)

читать –> прочитать (to read)

-Sometimes there are stem changes

-а  –> и = получать  –> получить (to receive)

-ывать –> а = показывать –> показать (to show)

-ва –> - = продавать –> продать (to sell)

-и –> - = убирать –> убрать (to clean)

-Rarely, it just completely changes

I feel like there is this myth about langblrs and language learners that you see online, that they are studying their target languages all the time, all day, at every second they get. That they are perfect learners who never get it wrong, even if you know they do.

No, we are human, we procrastinate and get tired or bored too. 

We are just like everyone else. I may love a language and find it hard to be motivated or have energy to study or do something in that language, specially in the lower levels when I can’t just watch a YouTube video or whatever in the language.

We are human!
