Hello friends! Once again letting you know I have an Ao3 account, where I have begun posting fanfiction! My username is LaceyStars.
With the way the world is going, there is a slight chance Tumblr goes to shit, so I am sharing this with you so you can both read my writing, and know I'm not dead in case I disappear :)
one of the best decisions I’ve made was leave wattpad for archive of our own
“what’s the tea?” wattpad is pro censorship and driven mainly by capitalism, any work that is taboo and work that is just “smut without plot” is considered against wattpad’s rules and it can get removed if someone reports it to wattpad.
wattpad is also literally full of ads. if you want an ad-free wattpad experience, you will have to subscribe to wattpad premium. this won’t protect your works from censorship, it will just remove ads for you — so you can read fics without getting interrupted by ads every time you move to the next chapter.
also I guess wattpad premium allows you to download as many works as you want to read offline. whereas if you’re on free plan, you can only download a few works to read offline.
I believe the platform recently updates their rules. nothing changes. you still get ads and censorship. but they just make the rules more strict in regards of smut without any real plot. so basically their new policy just makes things even worse for their own users.
mind you, on ao3, there’s zero censorship. you can post the most filthy porn without plot fic on ao3. you can post the most taboo fic on ao3. ao3 was created specifically to host this exact type of fic. and also. no ads. you can download as many fics as you want to read offline. and everything is free.
as a former wattpad writer, I do not regret leaving wattpad for ao3. it’s a whole new world of complete freedom and creativity here. literally made by fans for fans. no ads. no censorship. no capitalism bs. thank you ao3 ♡
if you write something, you're a writer. if you make visual art, you're an artist. it really is that simple.
the online discourse about whether or not fanfic writers and fan artists are "real writers / real artists" is not only tiring but it also makes no sense. because by saying "fanfic writers aren't real writers, fan artists aren't real artists, because their art centers around pre-existing characters and because their art cannot legally be monetized" you're saying "art, to me, is not about art itself but about whether or not the thing I consume is about pre-existing characters", you're saying "art, to me, is not about art itself but about whether or not it is profitable" and that makes no sense.
art (creative writing included) doesn't care if the characters it portrays already exist in a piece of media, it doesn't care about profit or money. that's not what art is about. what art is about, is the artists'/writers' love and passion that they have for the worlds they create. and fanfic writers and fan artists create purely out of love and passion that they have for their stories and their comfort characters. that's the precise definition of being a writer/an artist.
Even if they do remake trigger happy havoc, the original survivors will still be the only canon survivors to me

Something I find really interesting about Shadow Milk Cookie is that how..wishy-washy his 'embracing' of deceit and 'rejection' of truth is.
Do not get me wrong, Shadow Milk Cookie does embrace deceit, he is The Beast of Deceit after all, but I often simultaneously get the impression he loathes Deceit. There is so much constant bubbling resentment that infects almost every major Shadow Milk Cookie scene toward deceit and toward the fact that cookies as a whole are foolish and monstrous enough to prefer it to true Knowledge. He does not see Deceit as The True Way, he does not see Deceit as Good, not really, he sees it as a fucking tar pit that ruins every cookie who has ever lived selfish and broken enough lives to seek it out. Shadow Milk Cookie himself embraces and uses deceit because..it feels safe. It offers a measure of control. Shadow Milk Cookie uses deceit himself to protect himself with layers of masks, and the bitterly force others to choke on the Deceit they so love. I think Shadow Milk Cookie silencing the Light of Deceit is also very telling.
On the other hand, Shadow Milk Cookie's problem with Truth often feels less like the kind of deep bitter Hatred he often has for Deceit, and more of a source of pain? Truth is naive, Truth is not valued by cookies, being Truthful will get you hurt, if you throw your lot in with Truth you will inevitably realize your naivety the hard way when cookies break you apart for it with their greedy hands and distrustful deceitful hearts. Shadow Milk Cookie utilizes Truth at times, it's pointed out in canon that there are often bits of Truth in his Deceit, and there are several moments where he- while he buries it in layers of denial and symbolism because vulnerability scares him- is remarkably candid with Pure Vanilla Cookie about why he is the way he is when asked for understanding.
Truth is not bad, but prioritizing Truth as an ideal is naivety that it will get you hurt and break you into pieces.
Deceit is monstrous, and Shadow Milk Cookie loathes it, but to be monstrous is to be safe.
Then there's the ever looming presence of Knowledge, and Shadow Milk Cookie's continuing relationship with Knowledge is fascinating. It's obvious he is still strongly connected to The Fount of Knowledge. He has a statue of The Fount of Knowledge in the spire, during his Dominion of Beasts segment he is physically represented by The Fount of Knowledge's sprite at one point despite being labeled as (and obviously speaking as) Shadow Milk Cookie which isn't something he comments on (as if it is not abnormal to be internally represented as such), in chapter fourteen he willingly draws upon memories of being The Fount of Knowledge to show Pure Vanilla Cookie, he internally refers to himself as The Fount of Knowledge (among other things) in his internal monologue in chapter fifteen, and later in chapter fifteen he is haunted by "You don't know anything, Fount of Knowledge, so why are you The Fount of Knowledge?", which strangely indicate a strong continuous identification with a self one would think Shadow Milk Cookie would be much more invested in erasing.
And that last part, that question he is haunted with- "You don't know anything, Fount of Knowledge, so why are you The Fount of Knowledge?"- ties very strongly into Shadow Milk Cookie's intense continued desire for Knowledge. He is constantly asking himself questions internally, and is still strongly driven by that one big question he's been yearning after for thousands of years; why did the witches create him to fail, where did they go, and what could it possibly take to draw their attention? He is not so intellectual about it now, but the obsessive question, the search for Knowledge, remains. We're led to believe Shadow Milk Cookie abandoned the part of himself that cared for Truth and Knowledge when he split off a part of his soul into The First Headmaster. And perhaps he did, to a point, because Shadow Milk Cookie's love of knowledge and trust in Truth have long since rotted within him.
But despite the massive shift for the worst taken when Shadow Milk Cookie became The Beast of Deceit, I don't think his inclinations are quite what one would assume. Shadow Milk Cookie follows Deceit, but that does not mean he doesn't hate and resent it to the core of his being. Shadow Milk Cookie dismisses and distrusts Truth, but that does not mean he holds no inclination toward it. Shadow Milk Cookie is no longer The Fount of Knowledge, but that does not stop him from thinking of himself with that old name long after shedding it, from envisioning himself internally as The Fount of Knowledge without question at times, from grieving and resenting that he could never have fulfilled the duties of Knowledge, or from clawing at scraps of Knowledge desperately even now.
All of which is really really deeply fascinating to me and not something I think gets enough spotlight in fanon discussions of Shadow Milk Cookie.

do any other teachers notice this behavior and how do you manage it?
I find that asking kids questions is really useful in understanding behavior. sometimes as simple as: "why did you say/do that?"
what a lot of people should know is being a woman in this situation makes it 100x harder to manage simply because the kid who is misogynistic will not take you seriously by default. I have a female co teacher who is just as strict as the men here but still gets way more disrespect. that's very demoralizing
parents often significantly underestimate how much their kids actually pick up on. I can kind of tell when a kid says something that's overheard from a parent- sometimes they sort of change their regular tone or behavior in the moment
Alright, so I get that this is a joke, but as a Certified Mental Health Professional I do actually have some advice in this situation!
Essentially, I tend to explain this using Red, Amber, Green.
Red: This is panic attack zone, dissociation zone, cry and collapse zone. It won't usually hurt you (though it may be the mode in which you do things that put you at risk or hurt you) but it's extremely unpleasant and very hard to function. Also very hard to learn anything! Your brain is so busy freaking out that it's not synthesising and storing information well.
Amber: This is the 'do it scared' zone. Excellent zone, very important. You're challenged, but you're still functional. You can take in new information and learn things - including hopefully things like 'this thing I was scared of didn't actually hurt me', the kind of learning that can turn an 'Amber' activity into a 'Green' activity. Amber is also an energy intensive zone - you might feel good, you might get a buzz on and be gaining some energy back from feelings of success, but you are definitely burning energy the whole time you're in Amber, just by managing your feelings of anxiety.
Green: This is the comfort zone, where you feel safe and at ease. It's a very important zone - you can rest and rebuild resources here. But if you stay here all the time you never learn anything new, and have limited chances to grow.
Ideally, with 'do it scared', you should be alternating 'do it scared'/Amber zone with doing things that bring you back into Green! That way you're not just constantly burning energy. This is important, because managing emotions takes energy, and if you completely tap out all your resources to manage emotions, Amber can very quickly turn into Red.
The problem really flares up if you have no Green zone, or if your Green zone is uncomfortably small. If that's the case for you, I would honestly encourage you to focus on building this up first, or at the very least alongside, 'doing it scared'! Ideas for building up a Green zone: -Spend some time noticing your feelings of safety/calm (or perhaps just 'less agitated'. Make notes about what you notice in your body that tells you you feel safe / safer. Check in with yourself regularly so you get used to noticing this. -Match these feelings to triggers / environments / activities. See if you can identify anything that helps move you into a 'greenish' zone. -Play around with all the self-care stuff out there. Soothing music. Breathing exercises. Meditation. Sensory toolkits. If you've tried one of those things when you're already stressed out, and it hasn't worked, that doesn't mean it's useless - not everything will work to bring you from Red to Amber, or from Amber to Green, but it might still work to bring you from 'yellowy-green' to 'deeper green'. -Savour it. When you're in a 'green' mode, let yourself sink into it as much as you can, try to really notice the sensations of it. Get silly with it if you want to - try pretending you're a pretentious food critic getting intense about mouthfeel. What's the bodyfeel of this mode, the emotionfeel of it, the mindfeel of it? Aim to enjoy it.
Essentially - do it scared, but also take time to rest in between!
