I am still actively participating in the YouTube boycott (for more than a year now!), and the one thing I haven't been able to replace through various alternatives is the little red line that signals to you that a video has been watched before. I love the sense of progress and completion that came with it. The sense of achievement, of always knowing how much of a given channel's videos you've gone through. I miss that.

The only place that seems to be using the same system is VK video, but it's owned by Gazprom, and any Russian will know why that's not a good place to watch videos on. Sure, there's no AI age verification yet, and you cannot get copyright-striken for media that doesn't have official presence in Russia, but there's censorship, video theft and lots and lots of pro-Putin bigotry on there... Not to mention, the reason we got YouTube blocked in Russia wasn't to save us from the AI age verification and the ID theft that comes with it (it wasn't even happening at the time), but because Gazprom wanted more traffic to go to VK video and Rutube, and also because plenty of Russian YouTubers were criticizing the government and being too anti-war for its liking.

Anyway, Preservetube and Internet Archive are great, but I miss the little red like marking watched videos. That is all. If any YouTube alternative that isn't owned by a shitty organization from my home country does implement it one day, that would be great.
