And with the season 20 review posted, my Simpsons reviews have come to a close after almost a whole year. Thanks to everyone who actually gave a crap about my opinions (for some reason). Again, not reviewing season 21 onwards, that's just too much extra work.

The Simpsons Season 20: My thoughts
It's come to this, the very last DVD boxset.
Well, technically, 19 was the last one, having been released in 2019, because season 20's DVD was released in 2010 in honour of the show's 20th anniversary, a year after these episodes aired and a few months before the season 13 boxset's release. Yeah, I'm confused too.
This is not only the last season to have a DVD set but it's also the last one to have episodes in a 4:3 aspect ratio, switching to 16:9 around halfway into the season, complete with a new intro which adds about 2 more recurring gags. Now I enjoyed this season alright but, I'm kinda glad they stopped making boxsets here since they're is currently at 36 seasons and my shelves can only hold so much. That and from this point on, there are fewer and fewer gems in each season (or maybe I just think that because I haven't rewatched those later seasons as much).
Favourite Episodes:
Sex, Pies and Idiot Scrapes
Both stories are quite funny. That's about all I got.
Lisa the Drama Queen
(I thought it was nice how Lisa made a new friend, even if she might be a bit odd (although, that might be putting it lightly). It does make me wonder though, what happened to Juliet after this?
Take My Life, Please
Oh wow, the screen really let itself go. Anyway, I like the flashbacks to Homer's High School days and the glimpse at an alternate past but even ignoring those, the episode as a whole is still pretty funny.
How the Test Was Won
I really like Skinner's story with the boys on the bus, especially how he ends up connecting with them in the end. It is strange how Lisa was unable to answer even a single question on the test but that doesn't really affect my enjoyment.
In the Name of the Grandfather
Another globe trotting adventure with the Simpsons. Homer and Abe buy an Irish pub and it goes about as well as you'd expect.
Father Knows Worst
Homer tries to be a helicopter parent to Bart and Lisa. He doesn't do a very good job at it but it's nice that he's trying and also there's some decent gags here or there.
Waverly Hills 9-0-2-1-D'oh
I dunno, I just liked it.
Not so Favourite Episodes:
MyPods and Boomsticks
Don't get me wrong, this episode has a lot of funny moments but I can't help but feel like Homer comes off as too racist in this episode.
Wedding for Disaster
(SPOILER ALERT) So Patty and Selma kidnap Homer and lock him in a room so he misses his and Marge's second wedding but in the end, they face almost no consequences. Sure, they pay for the wedding in the end so that Bart and Lisa don't tell their parents what they did but I still feel like they got off too easy here.
Surprisingly, I didn't have anything to say about the Moe episode this season so I'll instead mention how there's no bonus features on this set, not even commentaries. I almost didn't buy this set because of it, thinking they'd probably re-release it once they get to 19, but season 19 didn't have any deleted scenes so I ended up getting the season 20 set when I came across it at JB Hi-Fi one time (glad I did because they no longer stock any Simpsons DVDs at all).
Well, that's it. This is my last ever Simpsons review. I started doing these in August of last year and we're finally at season 20. And if you're expecting me to review all the other seasons or specials on Disney+, you're all nuts.
The Simpsons Season 19: My thoughts
Alright, we're up to the first season to come out after the movie (and a shorter season due to the writer's strike going on at the time). This is the latest DVD release of the show and the region 5 copy of it now goes for a pretty penny so I'm glad I got my copy when I did, although I didn't much enjoy the experience of purchasing it (word of advice, never go shopping on boxing day).
When I was young, I honestly thought the show was gonna end after the movie but it turns out it didn't. Some might say it should've ended way sooner than that but that's not what I'm, here to talk about today. Let's take a look at this batch of episodes.
Favourite Episodes:
He Loves to Fly and He D'ohs
I like how the opening credits depict the town being repaired after the events of the movie, as well as characters from the movie making cameos. As a whole, this episode is pretty good. I like Stephen Colbert in this one.
The Homer of Seville
Homer becoming an opera singer? Sure, that works.
Husbands and Knives
Love Jack Black in this. That's it, that's basically the whole reason this episode makes the list.
Funeral for a Fiend
Clever Sideshow Bob ploy in this one. Faking his death and having his whole family help with the scheme? It's amazing that Lisa figured it out. (I know that's a spoiler but this episode is almost 18 years old, you've had plenty of time.)
Love, Springfieldian Style
Another random trilogy, I tend to enjoy these.
The Debarted
Yeah, the voice for Donny is mildly distracting compared to the other kids but you get used to it pretty quickly. This episode has a clever story to it, I like the idea of Principal Skinner putting a mole into Bart's group of friends to sabotage his pranks.
Dial "N" for Nerder
Don't know what else to say, this one legit has a pretty good mystery factor.
Any Given Sundance
I like it when shows do episodes at a film festival and the Chalmskinn stuff might be the best parts of this episode.
All About Lisa
Okay, I know this is basically half the episodes now but whatever, this one is pretty good.
Not so Favourite Episodes:
That '90s Show
Okay, this episode wasn't actually that bad but it's kind of an odd writing choice having an episode that flashes back to the 90's even though the show took place during and was on the air for pretty much the entirety in the 90's. Again, didn't hate the episode but that was a very odd choice. Having said that, this episode does have a quote that I live by. "He who is tired of Weird Al is tired of life."
Mona Leaves-a
So they brought back Homer's mother in this one only to have her die at the end of the first act. This should be a big emotional moment but to me, it feels kind of like a plot device, especially when we get to the final act. There are some good lines in this episode but I feel like if they wanted to kill off Mona Simpson properly, they should've done a better story around it.
Now I'll just quickly talk about these two episodes.
The episode, "I Don't Wanna Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" features Steve Buscemi as a bank robber who Marge befriends. I originally listed this one in my favourites list on the Twitter and Bluesky versions of this review but when I came to typing the extended review for Facebook and Tumblr, I realized I didn't have anything to say about it so I left it out.
I also don't have much to say about "Eternal Moonshine of the Simpson Mind" but I wanted to mention the YouTube video spoof near the end because of this.
Anyone else remember when YouTube's endcards used to look like this? (unless you're too young to remember 2008 YouTube, then I'm just showing my age).
Unrelated but I was disappointed by the lack of deleted scenes on this DVD.
So weird seeing a Disney logo on a Simpsons DVD.
And just like that, I have reviewed the very last Simpsons DVD set ever released. Join me next time when I look at the season 20 DVD set. (confused? I'll explain things next time)
The Simpsons Movie: My thoughts
Well, time to discuss the Movie.
I mean, it's The Simpsons Movie, what can I say that no one else has already said? People were anticipating this movie for about 15 years and there have been mixed views on it over the years. Personally, I love this movie. I remember when it was coming out. I was 9 at the time and everyone at school was talking about it. Channel Ten kept airing ads and even doing a marathon of the best episodes leading up to the Australian premiere. I think I might have been counting down the days leading up to seeing it in the cinema but I could be misremembering that bit.
The Story:
So in the film, Lisa gets the town to clean up the lake and Homer gets a pet pig (Hey, remember Spider Pig?) Things go well until Homer dumps all his pig's droppings in a the lake, leading to it getting polluted, the E.P.A. getting involved and Springfield getting trapped in a huge dome. Upon finding out it's Homer's fault, the entire town forms an angry mob and goes after the Simpsons. The family manages to escape the mob, find a way out of the dome and escape to Alaska, only to leave when they find out about the government's secret evil plan and come to the realization that they have to save Springfield (although Homer needs some convincing).
Fun fact 1: Whenever this movie was aired on Australian TV, Bart's crotch, the bomb defusing robot shooting itself and Otto smoking a bong were all either censored, edited or cut out (there was also a noticeable glitch when Homer slid down the rope into Springfield but I bring it up here because it happened every time it aired so I can only assume there must have been an error in the broadcast master they used).
Production history (kinda):
Now I love this movie. I loved in when I first saw it in third grade and I still love it today. The making of this film is almost as entertaining as the actual movie. Apparently this was in development as far back as 2001. Man, I wonder how many story pitches there were. One pitch I know for certain is that they had plans as far back as season 4 when they were working on the Kamp Krusty episode. Supposedly, someone in the crew, most likely one of the higher ups, suggested that this episode's story could probably work as the plot for a Simpsons movie but the crew immediately rejected this idea as they struggled to think of ideas to make this story 22 minutes, let alone 80 minutes.
Fun fact 2: To promote the film as it was coming out, several 7eleven convenience store across the United States were converted into Kwik-E-Marts where you could buy some products as seen in the show. Man, I wish they did something like that over here!
Thoughts and Opinions:
Like I said, I still love this movie but there are a couple of things I feel I might bring up though. I think it's kinda weird that they have Arnold Schwarzenegger as the president. Why not just use Rainier Wolfcastle? But this gets a pass because he did have one of the funniest lines in the film. That line of course being "I was elected to lead, not to read. NUMBER THREE!"
Not a big issue but I personally don't think depicting the E.P.A. as the villains has aged well for one or two reasons. Having said that, Russ Cargill is still a very fun villains to watch and I do attribute that to the acting skills of Albert Brooks.
Now, some people refer to Homer in some episodes as "Jerkass Homer" due to his actions. I think Homer is a big jerk in this movie but I honestly think it works in this case because it's all apart of his character journey in the film.
As a whole, I feel this films has a tiny bit more edge compared to the show at the time which is a bit unexpected but that sometimes works in it's favour (Homer flipping the bird is kinda funny to me).
Fun fact 3: At some point during the film's production, Russ Cargill almost had a different design completely but by the time they went with the design we're more familiar with, they'd already developed some of the toys so his Burger King toy depicted his prototype design.
So yeah, Simpsons Movie is great, highly recommend it to any long time Simpsons fan who hasn't seen it yet (if there are even people like that). Next time, we're going back to reviewing the regular seasons.

The Simpsons Season 18: My thoughts
'sup, here's my review of the 18th season, the last one before the movie! Little fun fact about this DVD set, it exists solely because of people online complaining. Season 17, which was released on DVD in 2014, was originally planned to be the very last Simpsons boxset. This ticked off a lot of collectors who now had a 2 season gap in their collection (but we'll talk about that another time). Season 17 was almost the last boxset but diehard fans wrote into Fox saying they wanted more DVDs so we finally got this set in 2017. The lesson here is, DVDs are better than streaming and sometimes, bullying corporations can work.
Favourite Episodes:
The Mook, the Chef, the Wife and Her Homer
I like the introduction of Fat Tony's son, Homer and Bart in the mafia, the truck, the truck truck, the truck truck truck, and especially the twist at the end (full disclosure, I haven't seen the Godfather or the Sopranos and don't really intend to start on either one).
G.I. (Annoyed Grunt)
We've got Homer in the Navy, why not Homer in the army reserves? The Looney Tunes inspired sequence is enjoyable as hell and I love how Marge helps Homer outsmart the military.
Moe'N'a Lisa
I love me some Moe episodes. I will admit, he does come off as a jerk in this one, but that was because of peer pressure and he and Lisa do make up in the end.
Ice Cream of Margie (with the Light Blue Hair)
I like Homer as an ice cream man (and especially like the design of his truck) and Marge making art from the ice cream sticks. The conflict near the end feels a bit forced but the way they make up is still very sweet (and I mean that in two ways).
Revenge Is a Dish Best Served Three Times
Again, I love a good trilogy episode. I'll admit I don't know anything about The Count of Monte Cristo but I still liked the parody, as well as the one about Bart's friend and the Batman parody.
Springfield Up
This one may retcon a thing or two but it's still entertaining seeing how these characters grow over every 8 years. And once again, why is it that I still don't have The Rutles on DVD?
Homerazzi
I dunno, I just thought this one was funny. I don't always need a good reason.
Marge Gamer
The 2007 style online video game stuff and the reference to Bend it like Beckham may date this episode a tad but I still enjoyed it. I like when they mess with the format a tiny bit once in a while.
Crook and Ladder
It's fun to see Homer and the others as firefighters. I mean, okay yeah, they do end up stealing stuff but there's always the hope that they'll get better, specifically Homer. Even then, it's still depicted in a comedic way. As a whole, I still quite enjoyed it.
24 Minutes
A good 24 parody, or at least I assume it is, I've never actually watched 24 but I think it still works even though I haven't seen the original. Give it a watch, this episode is pretty good.
Not so Favourite Episode:
The Boys of Bummer
Sorry to sound like an exaggerated angry YouTube reviewer for a second but this might actually be one of my absolute least favourite episodes. Bart ends up losing a little league baseball game and the entire town, THE ENTIRE TOWN, constantly bullies and harasses him for it to the point where he has a mental breakdown, falls from a tower and ends up in hospital, at which point the whole town, knowing that he's in the hospital, STILL boos him! Sure, they stage a new game just for him to win so he can regain his confidence at the end but that does not save this episode at all. Also, Homer's B plot is kinda boring. Yeah, this episode is just terrible, it's too mean with not enough comedy to balance it out, I say give it a skip.
As a whole, I still enjoyed this season. brought back memories of 9 year old Lachie looking forward to new episodes every week on channel 10.
