I think the reason why Alyosha works so well for me as a character that’s so good and loving and sort of “morally perfect” is that

A: he does not think any of that is true. He’s constantly talking about his dark thoughts and how he’s probably going to hell

B: far too often when he’s going about doing his little good deeds, people take one look at him like “Jesus Christ this fuckin guy!! Go home Karamazov! We hate you and your dress” and he’s like “that’s fine! I still want to help” and

C: sometimes he gets to crash out

He is at risk of corruption at anytime and he knows it and that makes all the times he chooses to be good, even when it sucks and the whole world is beating him down, so much more tasty. Because he wants it!

One could even read it like that’s his true vice— the way that Pride is Ivan’s and Pleasure is Mitya’s, Alyosha wants to be a good man almost to the point of self destruction. He locks himself away in a monastery because he’s afraid of himself and his own capacity for darkness
