Talking dog movies. We all watch 'em, presumably we all love 'em, but they're not the kind of genre that typically gets a lot of real critical analysis - which makes sense, what a terrible idea that'd be! Anyway, let's do that.
At what point does art become a lie? At what point does satire become "fake news"? Where we draw the line between ethical and unethical 'fake realities' might seem obvious - but it isn't. Here we explore a few distinct examples of fictionalised realities, how we might identify issues with them, and introduce this topic for later discussion. Part one of a series.
The Truth About 90s Cartoons And "LGBT Brainwashing"
The 90s to early 2000s. It was either the period you started really discovering yourself, or the period you gained a basic grasp of your own sentience (or something else entirely, if you’re an exception to my viewer demographics). Whatever the case, it was an age wherein many of us learned as much from Cartoon Network and Disney as we did from school or our parents - and, as it turns out, it was here we were infected with the deadly liberal propaganda that made us what we are today. Or did it? Let’s take a look...
In the heady days of the mid-2000s, Tim Burton was in high demand, and it was decided he'd head the newest adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice In Wonderland. Tim, who admitted having "no personal connection" to the original text, decided to use the film as a ground-up reimagining of the story - a hero's journey with magical swords and ancient prophecies and a strong moral message about... following orders? Ultimately we wound up with a film lacking any real identity, confused in its own message, and somehow less feminist than something written in the late 1800s.
But I'm getting ahead of myself. Off we trek, into the world of Wonderland.
NEW VIDEO! Despite popular misconception, eugenics isn't just the realm of long-dead fascist dictators - it's an idea pervasive in media to this day. Remember Sky High, that 2005 Disney superhero movie? It might be different from how you recall...
At times in life, your personal convictions will be questioned - you’ll have to wonder, among other things, when political violence can be acceptable, when it’s time for revolution, and when for reform. Against all odds, a Fallout DLC got me thinking on this topic - and now I’m chatting about it here.
Whether you’re a “Fallout 3 is cool” kind of person or more of a “Fallout 3 is an abomination that ruined the franchise”, I hope you get something out of this video. Thanks.
Easily my most comprehensive video essay yet - analysing the many perspectives surrounding the controversial James Gunn Twitter outrage. I think it’s easy to brand Gunn a monster for his past, and I think it’s easy for some to throw down their arms and say “So the SJWs can’t handle a callout if it’s one of their own, eh?” but, ultimately, I don’t think this is a situation that comes with easy answers. A right-wing mob outed a high-profile director, and he was fired for it - the rest of the story requires some unpacking. Hope you all enjoy, and of course likes/shares help if you do!
“Outed”? No, a pair of professional instigators dug up JOKES he made in 2008 and apologized for in 2012. And now they’re doing the same with other people, like Dan Harmon and Sarah Silverman, cause apparently they’ve forgotten what a joke is and are incapable of seeing change in a human being’s behaviour.
I’ll take it as an active denial that right wingers did something arguably bad.
Big companies freak out over bad PR, it’s expectable. That’s why people (right and left) love to dig out dirt on people they don’t like, it’s the game.
Making it about “damn sjws and their callout culture” is a stupidly gullible interpretation at best and actively misleading at worst.
Man, turns out my video was really great at attracting the attention of people who get angry at things without watching the things they’re angry about.
