Tumblr has been showing targeted ads for "FTM binders" off Amazon. They look like this:
Do not buy these.
A binder is a piece of medical equipment. If you use one incorrectly, or use a poorly made one, you can really fuck up your ribs. This article from the Cleveland Clinic talks about how to bind safely.
A $14 binder is guaranteed not to be safe. There's a reason reputable companies charge more- sometimes a lot more. They have to carefully design binders so they don't crush your ribs or make you sick.
You know how everyone says Don't Bind With Duct Tape? Don't bind with Amazon binders.
I wasn't able to do too much of this, just the first bit of the neckline (it's an off-she-shoulder shrug). I'm about to start the arms, so I need to put some stitch markers but I might need help doing so accurate while also wearing it. So I'll wait to work on that more when I get home and have some assistance.
So I spent 2 days making a hat, scarf, and gloves.
I had a pattern for the scarf and hat, but the fingerless gloves/mitten flap combo was freehanded. They're a little bulky and a little big, but they're nice and warm.
And even if the gloves are a little... we'll call them, rustic., I'm still pretty proud of them.
I'll need to add some buttons to fasten the mitten flap shut, but I don't have any I was really looking so I'll have to go the the store later and pick up some buttons to finish them up.
I took a few days off due to hand pain, but got back to work quicky.
Day 8
The length of the skirt is almost finished.
Day 9
Skirt length and border finished! Tomorrow I'll start on the internal ruffles - they give the impression of the gills on the underside of some mushrooms.
Day 10
I've started the internal ruffles and it is... a very long process. I'm quadrupling stitches, and will need to meander around that circle a few times before the length is finished.
Day 11
Finally finished the entire first row of the gills... this is going to be tedious.
Day 12-18
It took a MINUTE.
In the end, I love the look. But it took FOREVER.
Day 18-20
So I changed the pattern a bit, and made the drawstring internal instead of external. It'll be a little harder to tie, but I think it looks better. Nobody else might see it, but my brain sees only the drawstring on mine. I also made four panels with the drawstrings. So instead of having one that I tie, I have four. Front, back, left and right side.
It's seems pretty extra, but I have a digestive disorder and being able to let the pressure of a tie be distributed over four sections vs one is really important. Some days I can be pretty bloated, some days I'm not. So if I can adjust some place more than others, it puts less pressure on my stomach overall.
Day 20
Skirt (kind of) COMPLETE!
I've finished the edges and tucked must of the tails. I'm going to add some small beads or something to the bottom of all the drawstrings to held get ahold of them easier.
I might also add mushroom spots to the skirt, but I haven't decided yet. Luckily, that'll be quick and easy to do. I also might add some faux corset lacing to the front of the skirt and/or a bow on the back (a la Sailor Moon).
The thought about adding chains using the glittery yarn for a little hint of mycelium (stylized, above-ground mycelium, anyway.)
So, complete for now - but I'll be adding more detail as once the rest of the costime is done.

I plan on doing a quick journal entry every day to record my progress on this project. I'm hoping it'll keep me motivated, since writing proves to be nigh-imppssible these days.
Day 2:
Increase is done, and now it's just repeating the same pattern until it's long enough.
Day 3:
More length, but not much else. The super loose loop at the top won't be there once I finish the edges of the the skirt.
Day 4:
I have most of the length done! All that's left is the border (which will add an inch or so), and the inner ruffle. And of course, any finishing stuff decide to do further down the line.
So I got a bag full of yarn a couple of days ago...
I've known for awhile that I wanted to do a mushroom person of some kind for my next big costume.
Lady Cor was a huge success - I had a lot of people ask for photos and people seemed to like it.
I hate that I wasn't able to finish the lantern purse I was making, but I hope to finish it sometime next year.
But I digress.
My crochet costume 2025...
Queen Lilachina
Named for Inocybe lilacina, or the Lilac Fibrecap. Queen Lilachina is as pretty as she is poisonous. I'll be using mostly lilac, orchid and white with sparkles in it.
For this project (as of posting), there will be five costume parts:
Part 1: Skirt

This is going to be pretty basic. Lilac main body and white sparkly for the under ruffle. I think I'm going to try to get some plain white without glitter for the main color switch at the border. Might remove the circles on the skirt. Might have chains of mycelia trail from the skirt. I don't think I'll do the standard tie waistband that's in the patter, I'll think of a different way to cinch it smaller if I end up loosing weight again.
Part 2: Leg Skirts

Obviously, this shrug is very busy with colors. I'll most likely stick with the lilac, white, with some pops of orchid that will be visible at the top of the hat as well.
Part 4: Hat

The top of the hat will be orchid and will fade into the lilac. I do plan to put strings of chain stitches throughout the hat under the gills. Kind of like mycelia hanging down. I'll be using a white yarn with glitter in it.
Part 5: Gloves
No pattern, just vibes. I plan to make a very simple glove, possibly with a ridge along the fingertips. Chain stitches of mycelia will be in the gloves, so as I reach out, mycelia hangs down.
Do I know how to make gloves?

I had some quick gloves I made for Lady Cor. They weren't anything to write home about and made by the seat of my pants.
These gloves will probably be the same. Since the shrug is long-sleeved, these will be shorter gloves.
Now, I'm still not sure about what kind of shoes to wear or what sort of bag to carry. I have no idea what sort of bag a mushroom queen would carry, or what shoes she would wear for that matter. It seems like just don't a mushroom bag would be a little cheating, but I'm not sure.
I'm also not sure about what sort of too to wear for the costume. I can't wear just the shrug, obviously. Any ideas of what I could wear, or any patterns for something that would fit?

So after a year of work I finished a crow costume I've been working on. I'm not the best at showcasing things (at least I think so), but here's some images of the I did! Ignore the weird blurs in the first image - I thought it best to remove people from the image, privacy and all that.
This was all don't over the course of a year. I was so glad that a lot of people seemed to like it - it was so good having feedback face-to-face with other crafters
I actually got asked about a commission from one of the leather workers at the renaissance faire for the wings. I haven't decided, as it's a massive project, even for the price we discussed. The good thing about this is that she understands how that kind of world works, and has been very understanding when I told her about my illness and that I have times where I can't do much of anything for weeks or so. I've never done a commission, and unsure exactly what to do. But, that's another thought for another day. She gave me her email address and told me to email her if I decide to.

So I put these pictures up on my main blog and it - to my surprise - got a massive amount of attention.
Well, massive in my opinion.
So I decided to start putting stuff on a different blog, and the first step is put the images on this one.
So here are the nearly-complete wings, before I was able to sew it all together.
It is about 6 1/2 feet - and because I'm American, I need to add a silly way to measure that. So it is about the same wingspan of your average bald eagle.
For my metric friends, that's almost 2 meters or 198 cm.
I worked on it for three months. That might sound pretty fast, but I've been out of work since last May (a year tomorrow) after developing a (hopefully) temporary digestive disorder that eventually required a feeding tube to avoid the whole 'starving to death' thing.
So I've had nothing but time.
Here are some pictures of the final result.
I think I'm going to add some shoulder straps to keep it up a little easier and to better distribute the weight. It's about 3lbs (about 1 kilo and some change). That doesn't sound heavy, but carrying it around all day on top of being medically fragile got really hard, so I think that will help.
Here's a close-up of the gloves I added. I also used a plastic clothes hanger to add a handle so that I can actually have the wings completely spread (I'm tiny, so my arms have no chance otherwise)
I might outline the interior of the shawl but I haven't decided yet.
