Islamophobia is so rampant in the UK that one mosque is targeted every five days, with attacks including assault, vandalism, and arson. yet we hear little of these or other Islamophobic attacks, even though, in the year ending March 2025, 45 percent of all religious hate crime was targeted at Muslims
the muted response to this from the media and government isn't surprising, since they helped create the Islamophobic environment and it suits them well. of the 40,913 articles about muslims analysed from major british newspapers during 2025, 70 percent associated them with negative subjects or behaviour; and the study judged that almost half contained negative bias, "defined as the presence of at least two problematic factors such as generalisation, misrepresentation, omission of context or misleading headlines"
Muslims are treated as a racialised population in the UK. they're presented as culturally backwards, especially patriarchal, unable to integrate into british society, potential terrorists, and prone to sexual abuse (largely of white women and girls). this narrative was greatly reinforced by the media during the wars against Afghanistan, Iraq, and Libya, and never fails to generate outrage amongst sections of the population. that outrage leads to engagement and ad revenue. what at points is largely just the common, and racist, liberal support for the nation's foreign policy has also generated a stable source of revenue for the news media's owners
their source of revenue is, ofc, a source of their victim's suffering, not just through verbal and physical assault, but through things like housing and employment discrimination
socialists in the UK need to lead the fight against Islamophobia, as we should lead the fight against every effort of the capitalist class to pit the proletariat against itself. protecting mosques, fighting media bias, employment and housing discrimination, and building solidarity between Muslim and non-Muslim sections of the proletariat needs to be a priority. we all have a common enemy and we need to unite the proletariat against it
