Leaving for now

Having recently binge watched Handmaid’s Tale, Islam would actually have fit much better as the religious backdrop for the society Margaret Atwood came up with.

Gilead “justifies” their handmaid system with the story of Jacob and Rachel, where Rachel is infertile and tells Jacob to sleep with her handmaid. There’s another story where a similar thing happens - Abraham, Sarah, and Hagar.

In Christianity, the lineage of Jesus traces through Judah, who was born to Jacob and Leah, Jacob’s first wife. The lineage also goes through Isaac, born to Abraham and Sarah. In the case of Abraham, God promised that the Messiah would be his descendent. When Abraham slept with Hagar, he was trying to make God’s plan happen outside of God’s design for marriage (one man, one woman). God said no, and instead fulfilled His promise by letting Sarah conceive Isaac.

In Islam, Muhammad’s lineage is traced through Ishmael, the son of Hagar. The story of Abraham and Hagar would be a much stronger justification for a handmaid system for Muslims than the story of Jacob and Bilhah is for Christians.

Given the fact that Islamic societies today frequently discourage or prohibit women from getting an education, driving, etc, they are much further along the path toward a Handmaid’s Tale society than even the most out there Christian church.

don't forget. Marriage between one man and one woman is not just about procreation--and in fact, procreation outside of marriage is very much frowned upon because it defiles the marriage bed.

So before a marriage ever gets to having kids, marriage is first a picture of the harmony and structural relationship between Christ and the church... Therefore any extramarital affair is antithetical to the design and purpose of marriage. And a forced one is especially wrong as it devalues the woman who is, like Adam, made in the Image of God with dignity and was given free will... God never forces us into His family.

Realizing how difficult this is for me jeez

speaking of third-wheeling i love when people are like "third-wheeled too hard and now i'm in a throuple" but i think a little spoken of third-wheeled-too-hard option is getting adopted by other adults. one time when i was 25 and in undergrad i made friends with a married couple in their thirties and ended up in such an unusual relationship that one day they called me to their house and sat me down very somberly and then one of them started crying and i thought one of them must have gotten some sort of life-altering health diagnosis or something

but then they told me they were getting a divorce and they were going to be okay, but they had been agonizing for two weeks over how to tell me because they didn't want to "disrupt" my life and it was then that i had to remind them that i was actually a fully grown adult and that i was going to be completely okay and that in fact i would like to be there for them in this tumultuous time and they were like

"oh....... yeah"

My favorite grocery store cashier died a few months ago. I know this probably sounds like a bizarre thing to be sad about. Her name was Judith and I only saw her once or twice a week, and only while I was paying for groceries. But even now, months later, I think of her when I'm at the grocery store. She used to save the ends of receipt paper rolls when they only had a foot or two left on them and give them to me, which I never asked her to do, but the first time she did it she held one out to me and said "you look like someone who would make a craft out of this," and I laughed because she was right. I do save them to put in geocaches and letterboxes. Our small talk was about the weather and the weekend and aren't those cookies good? They're so expensive though. But it's worth it.

I'm just saying. If you ever sit around wondering whether you'd be missed if you disappeared off the face of the earth, the answer is probably yes, very much, and probably by more people than you think.
