In vampire media, blood drinking is traditionally a metaphor for sex. Hellsing is no exception. But what makes Hellsing’s take on it so interesting is that its two vampire protagonists are both sexually traumatized individuals, and their attitudes towards blood drinking mirror the real world coping mechanisms of sexual abuse victims, namely hypersexuality and aversion to sex.

Alucard is constantly drinking blood. In a scene from the manga that unfortunately didn’t make it into the OVA, he binges on blood packs to the point that the table next to him and the floor around him are littered with dozens of empty blood bags. He drains both Rip and the Dandyman, and even stops in the middle of his Rio rampage to drink from the dead SWAT team. Judging by the size of his familiar army, he’s been at it ever since he died, too.

Seras outright refuses to drink blood. Integra has to practically force her just to drink a few drops, and it’s only once she meets Pip, builds a relationship with him, and gets his explicit consent that she drinks his blood. See also her comment to Zorin after biting her fingers off: “Even if I were about to die I wouldn’t drink a single goddamn drop of your evil blood! I don’t want you inside of me!”

Interestingly, they also seem to show non-metaphorical hypersexuality and sex aversion, since Alucard is near constantly hitting on Integra and Seras responds to sexual harrassment with screaming rage, whch neatly parallels their attitude towards drinking blood.
