INITIAL OUTWARD HOUND QUICK RELEASE PACK REVIEW! Edit: Ripley is a 70lb Aussie/Lab/Golden mix with a deep chest and she is seen above in a large size harness So Ripley got an outward hound quick release backpack as a gift from a family member. It was significantly cheaper (about 1/2 the cost) of the Ruffwear approach pack I have been wanting, so as long as it holds up that's definitely a plus! I had quite a bit of trouble getting it fit on her properly- the strap system is a little hard to work. I initially thought it might be a plus because it seemed like they wouldn't come undone as easily but that didn't turn out to be entirely true during the fitting process. Before I had it fit properly the harness was sliding around quite a bit, as long as the straps stay properly tightened during use though this is a minor issue. The straps themselves are not as rough to the touch as they initially appear but not as smooth as the ones on the Ruffwear pack. They are also much wider which will increase the potential for chaffing. The pack itself is detachable from the harness which doesn't honestly make a difference to me as I am firmly against using harnesses when your large dog isn't doing or training for a job. I'd honestly prefer it to be attached. I've read some reviews stating it may make the pack easier to fill off the dog but I imagine it might make it harder to pack evenly off the dog. I'll update you guys on this issue as well. Ripley is a long haired dog and she overheats fairly easy, I'm worried because the pack is detachable- essentially making the harness double layered- that she may get too warm. There is a lot of seemingly unnecessary material on this harness. The packs attach via 1 velcro loop on each side and a very loose clip at the top front end. This leads me to believe there is a lot of potential for slipping if not packed properly. The quality of the materials are definitely not as nice as the Ruffwear pack and this is probably where most of the price difference comes into play- however, as long as the packs holds together during use it's not a huge issue. The pack itself is nowhere near as large as the approach pack, I haven't been able to find anywhere the size of the pack (the Ruffwear Approach Pack in her size is 12L). We'll be taking Ripley out this weekend and I'll give a full review of the pack after we get some good use in! Overall I'm mostly just excited for her to have a pack and will be happy as long as it get's the job done. I don't mind helping her carry her gear :P. It's worth it, even if just for the look she gets on her face when we start pulling out all our gear and she realizes we're going <3
