I feel such a profound sadness and a level of grief for everybody who views their transness primarily through a lense of societal conformity and hegemonic failure.
My heart breaks for every transfem, for every trans woman or girl, for trans man, transmasc or trans boy, for every nonbinary person, for every agender person, for every genderqueer or gender-non-conforming person who views themselves through the lense of how they fail to meet a frankly horrid society's standards of normative gender performance.
I want every trans person to know that cis manhood, cis womanhood and cis ideas of what the spaces in between, what androgynity, what "genderless" should look like are not the end-all nor the only way that we may yet exist.
Our experiences as trans people, the way we feel, perceive, perform and LIVE our gendered experiences or lack thereof do not begin nor do they end with what a bigoted society deems appropriate or acceptable.
May your soft manhood be rich, may your hairy, fat and non-conforming womanhood be ever prospering.
May you find spaces where you can be who you want to be.
May you find people who love the way that you don't look the way cis-white-abled bodies ought to look.
May you find love for yourself the way you are and want to be.
May you learn to love the ways that you're unique and different.
An old friend who I don't talk to anymore once said "our existence does not end where the law begins" and I will echo that, "our existences do not end nor begin where horrid norms dictate". Your manhood, your womanhood, your in-between and outside, your "neither, none" or "all of the above" can look however you want them to look. You're allowed to bend the norms and break the rules, you don't have to conform.
May you be safe in all of this. May you find space where all of you can grow and prosper. May you yet live rather than just survive.
I’m a binary very gender conforming trans woman but that’s just who I am. I’m not putting in a show for others.
That being said, it’s not as straightforward as just trying to not fit in. People need jobs, food, housing, etc. Like it or not, trans people that fit more closely into what cis people are expecting are going to be able to navigate the world (in all aspects) easier. Most people don’t want to risk joblessness or homeless. Sometimes people conform to survive and I think it’s important to recognise that’s okay.
You say that like that’s in any way at odds with what I wrote but it’s not.
What this post says: "People should be allowed to express their gender however they want, even if they do not conform to cis norms and expectations. They should be safe to do so."
What this post doesn't say: "If you're a binary conforming trans person you're bad and wrong."
What this post also doesn't say: "Its safe and a simple and easy decision that anybody can make to just decide to not conform to societal norms."
The reason this post exists is that it ISN'T safe for so many people. The post says it SHOULD be because it fucking should but it isn't.
If every fiber of your being just happens to fall within the societally approved limits of what you are meant to look like as whatever gender you identify with: that's great! I hope you're very happy. But knowing what society expects of trans people to conform as being frankly unreasonable, the amount of conformity asked of people, how society expects us to bend ourselves out of shape, the way that these norms are often caked in thick layers of bigotry... frankly I find it hard to believe that you just got SO lucky that you effortlessly do this high grade parkour daily and you never struggle with it.
What this post says is that even binary trans people who WANT to look "stereotypically like the gender they ARE" should not be punished for struggling to uphold frankly impossible standards.
If cis women who are marginalized are sometimes "clocked" as trans women and experience prejudice because the idea of what womanhood should look like is a racist, colorist, colonialist, ableist, sexist, anti-scientific construct then don't you think a world where we ALL can exist free of that would be a beautiful sight to behold?
happy pride month once again, here’s a redraw of this iconic medieval art
When my mother forgets a word, she is the queen of coming up with new words. Words that would take a third National Treasure movie to fully decipher. I was talking to her yesterday, and she said this: “You know the time for los jibbities is coming up. You must be so excited!” Oh, is it time for los jibbities already? I must have missed it on my calendar. Are we celebrating something? “Of course! We should all be celebrating, shouldn’t we?” OK, so los jibbities is a happy thing. It’s not like something is giving you the heebie-jeebies, which would have been my one and only guess. “Los heebie-jeebies? Now you’re making things up...and this is my show.” You’re right. The time for los jibbities is coming up. Is this a season? “Yes, the season for love. The season for pride.” OK, los jibbities. “Yeah, sound it out.” Los…jibbities. LGBTs! “Sí, mira cuz you’re gay!” “You couldn’t just say pride season? You couldn’t just… *laughs*
HAPPY LOS JIBBITIES EVERYBODY!!!
The time for Los Jibbities has arrived!
