You know, having seen a spate of fans bemoaning fiction in which traumatic things happen to characters who seem to keep moving through with no visible adverse effects, I really think more people these days should watch Farscape.

went to bed because i was kind of losing it . woke up and im still mad just in a calmer and more actionable way . i think part of what upsets me so much is that it feels like gaslighting. it straight up feels like gaslighting. in the genuine, non-meme sense of the word. the cdc stopped tracking cases and then told us the pandemic was over. doctors don't wear masks and get all offended if you ask them to. grown adults don't cover their coughs. this isn't normal. none of this is normal. society & the cdc will try and tell you it's normal and it's not. and it feels like you're fucking crazy sometimes but you're not. the pandemic is real, it is ongoing, it is killing & disabling millions of people, and you're not crazy for still caring .
Are you in the USA? I cannot stress this enough: search your state's unclaimed property site to see if there is anything in your name.
I just got a check for nearly $900 that I didn't know about. Apparently it was sent to me at the end of 2019 and I never got it, so it was sent on to Unclaimed Property.
My friend checked the state he used to live in. He didn't have any unclaimed property of his own. But his dad, who died 20 years ago, had over $10,000 in unclaimed property. My friend is the heir, so he gets that money.
It involves a little paperwork to get the money but it's so worth it!
You can search ALL states using MissingMoney.com. And I recommend that you search ALL states - sometimes you might get a surprise about post property in another state (as my friend did with his dad!)

If a company, like Comcast or AT&T or Blue Cross Blue Shield, tries to send you a check but it's lost in the mail, or you moved, or for other reasons you don't deposit it, after two years they send it to the state you live in. The state then has it in a database under your name.
If you have a relative who died, they probably have funds in here, even if they were poor. If someone didn't close a bank account after their death, or never got the deposit back for the cable box, or never cleared out their PayPal account, that money would wind up in unclaimed property. (All three examples are actual things from my friend's sister that we just found in unclaimed property in her state. She died ten years ago.)

The only thing that's stopping me is that I have a very common name, and I don't want to accidentally do a fraud and get arrested for it.
You won't do a fraud. When you file the paperwork, you have to submit info such as a photo ID and a social security card, so they make sure you are the right person with that name. If you aren't, they don't arrest you, you just don't get the money.
One caveat, if your dead relative was in the state long term care system when they died, generally the state will seize the funds. Hence why we haven’t bothered claiming the funds for my MIL and her husband who predeceased her. The items for her were utility deposits. The state did send us a letter once explaining that they’d found an IRA in her name for $50,000 and were seizing the funds.
